I liked this space at a new art gallery and fabrication space, called the IdeaFabLabs, I believe. Visitors can hang out & play with the pieces on the table, building all kinds of cool things!

On Ash Wednesday, authors Annie La Ganga, Bill Cotter, and Dave Eggers made and served cheese sandwiches at a packed reading at City Lights Bookstore in San Francisco.
Peter Maravelis of City Lights began the evening and held up some wipes people could use after eating cheese sandwiches to make sure they had clean hands to handle the books with.
Dave Eggers introduced Bill Cotter whose first novel, Fever Chart, was published by McSweeney's books. He talked about how Cotter's book was the first one they published that had been submitted by email (it was then 175,000) words.
He emphasized the importance of independent bookstores like City Lights and Modern Times which is across the street from the McSweeney's offices. Modern Times was used as a case study in how many book sales a day are needed to sustain an independent bookstore in the San Francisco Panorama newspaper issue of McSweeney's.
Bill Cotter introduced Annie La Ganga who read from her memoir Stoners and Self-Appointed Saints. She explained she'd been a slam poet and recited one of her pieces from memory.
Cotter said it had been the idea of his editor at McSweeney's, Eli Horowitz (who is shown eating a cheese sandwich) to do something interesting on their book tour. He decided to make cheese sandwiches (which play a role in his novel).
In the window at City Lights, there was a tribute to the late Howard Zinn. The bookstore is on Jack Kerouac Alley which was created as part of the campaign to honor writers by City Lights co-founder Lawrence Ferlinghetti.
