Some great action and colors from the geese on a warm(ish) February morning. I was pleased to have nailed the focus quite well - I've been practicing with manual focus, and this is from one of my first full-manual mornings.

How do you transport a queen cell? Keep it vertical; no jarring, Don't chill and don't leave in direct sunlight. The cell wants to be just about body temperature. Some carry the cell vertically in a shirt pocket. Today I wasn't wearing a shirt pocket, so I taped it to my chest. #climateaction #beekeeper #pollinators #beekeepersgram_feature #hives #om #bee #insects_of_our_world #insects #protectthebees #beesrule #beesofinstagram #lovethybees #savethebees #saveourbees #savethebees #beekeeping #beekeeperlife #apricutores #apiary #backyardbeekeeping #beehive #honeybees #bienenvolk #imkerin #imkerei #idahome #thisisboise #damniloveboise #iamboise.

Somewhere in rural Idaho

With all of the rain that we have been enduring, I thought I'd post something to warm everyone up. Shot last July on a very warm morning on the docks outside of the Shore Lodge. (Payette Lake, McCall, Idaho)

Driving up & over a mountain and gazing at an amazing view.

When nectar is in short supply or unavailable, bees draw on their honey stores in the hive. During these times, it is important to frequently monitor the amount of honey in the hive because when it has all gone, the colony will starve. Starvation can be prevented by moving bees to an area where plants are yielding nectar or by feeding them white table sugar. There are differing views about the correct amount of sugar in syrup. Some beekeepers prefer a ratio of one part of sugar to one part of water, measured by weight (known as 1:1).

The Born Lakes are a chain of eleven alpine and glacial Paternoster lakes in Custer County, Idaho, United States, located in the White Cloud Wilderness. The White Clouds were given their name by early settlers because many of these skyward soaring pale peaks seem to blend together with the clouds above, making it hard to tell where mountains stop and clouds begin. The White Clouds lie near the center of Idaho, entirely within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. In the heart of the range there are over 90,000 acres of amazing terrain that became protected as The White Clouds Wilderness in 2015

you are my sunshine

my only sunshine.

Finding a dead hive is discouraging. This is three out of four dead hives, but I'm not giving up, bees need our help more than ever. Spring is the season of renewal. #climateaction #beekeeper #pollinators #beekeepersgram_feature #hives #om #bee #insects_of_our_world #insects #protectthebees #beesrule #beesofinstagram #lovethybees #savethebees #saveourbees #savethebees #beekeeping #beekeeperlife #apricutores #apiary #backyardbeekeeping #beehive #honeybees #bienenvolk #imkerin #imkerei #idahome #thisisboise #damniloveboise #iamboise

A “winter” bee is produced at the end of the summer. It is physiologically different than the summer bee, with a different protein profile than the summer bee. Winter bees also have fatter bodies which they rely for nourishment during the non-foraging months. A winter bee will live much longer (4 to 6 months) than a summer bee (45 days). The sole purpose of the winter bee is to get the colony through 'til spring. In the fall as the hive prepares for the long winter months ahead, the bee population drops as the summer bees die off, replaced by the smaller winter cluster. The honey bee does not hibernate, but is active all winter eating and metabolizing honey to keep warm. With the onset of cold weather, the bees congregate in a cluster, shivering their flight muscles to generate heat and warm the hive. The bees at the core of the cluster maintain a temperature of approximately 64-90 F (I keep my house at 69 F). #savethebees #beekeeping #beekeeperlife #beekeepers #apricutores #apiary #backyardbeekeeping #beehive #honeybees #bienenvolk #imkerin #imkerei #idahome #thisisboise #damniloveboise #iamboise

The foothills above Boise are rarely this green. I don't love them any less when they are brown.
