The Born Lakes are a chain of eleven alpine and glacial Paternoster lakes in Custer County, Idaho, United States, located in the White Cloud Wilderness. The White Clouds were given their name by early settlers because many of these skyward soaring pale peaks seem to blend together with the clouds above, making it hard to tell where mountains stop and clouds begin. The White Clouds lie near the center of Idaho, entirely within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. In the heart of the range there are over 90,000 acres of amazing terrain that became protected as The White Clouds Wilderness in 2015

So much smoke in the air as the grand finale wraps up the 2019 firework show on Hayden Lake.

We are having a beautiful September here in North Idaho. I'm loving all of the different colors.

Idahome for the holidays.

During our recent trip to Bonners Ferry, I was able to visit Myrtle Creek. In the early 1900's, one of my distant cousins owned the power plant that this creek powered.

Cum-u-what? Yeah, that’s Greek, I mean Latin for the ominous anvil cloud formation that hangs over the elevations of the pristine-pine-covered Coeur d’Alene National Forest, having the potential of delivering the blow of a pounding thunderstorm that would make Thor proud. Closer to the ground and the action at hand, the former Northern Pacific rails upon which a newly re-minted pair of second generation BNSF Geeps peen and ply are weather beaten and hammered beyond recognition not only having bowed laterally but kinked and buckled at the joints from over 100-years of usage and eventual non-usage and disrepair. A sorry state of affairs that does little justice to their past and present owner’s proud heritage. Post Falls, on the Coeur d'Alene branch, is just across the border from Washington in the Panhandle. Once served by several railroads, notably the Northern Pacific, Great Northern, Milwaukee Road, and Union Pacific (and their respective predecessors), is now a monopoly. The zenith of service over ten decades slowly, steadily tapering off from hard usage to a trickle: once a week. Down from as many as five days a week not too long ago. It is doubtful that branchlines like these will weather many more storms before succumbing to abandonment rendering images like this to the annals of railroad antiquity. Get your pictures while you can! If not this branchline, then one close to you. As rail enthusiasts, we have the responsibility to document these scenes for future generations of railfans. Sometimes, dust in the sunshine is a beautiful thing.

This was from our weekend trip to Moon Pass a few days ago. We were in for a treat with beautiful weather to make being outside perfect.

Second light snow of the season

Unfortunately, my camera took a swim on this trip and I lost a number of photos on the memory card due to water damage. This was one of the only photos I was able to salvage, and it's got a lot of motion blur in the foliage. I'll be going back very soon to get a better shot.

Spectacular winter scenes at Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge in northern Idaho, Dec. 17, 2021. USFWS photo: Sara Straub

The late sunrise time in the Kootenai Valley, only about 45 minutes from the Canadian border, keeps things chilly in the morning, where the low temperature on this day was in the single digits, said Straub, the USFWS refuge manager there.

“It was an absolutely stunning and crisp morning on the refuge with a fresh dusting of sparkly snow and hoarfrost blanketing the trees,” said Straub.

The rare powder snow blanketed the entire 2,800-acre refuge, turning cattails into popsicles, adding a layer to the iced-over refuge ponds and making the nearby Selkirk Mountains even more stunning.

In the winter, a herd of a few hundred elk often wanders down in the evenings, and rough-legged hawks can be seen hunting for mice in the uplands.

While the driving tour road is closed to vehicles for safety, visitors are welcome to cross-country ski, snowshoe, walk or bike on it.
