A bit about bee poop. Bees are very tidy creatures who won’t poop inside their home. In chilly weather, bees need to eat more to generate heat. It doesn’t take a degree in physiology to know the more you eat, the more you poop. Or, well, the more you need to poop. If you’re a bee and trapped in your hive because it’s too cold or too wet out to fly, um, yeah. This may be why bees are so grumpy when you open up the hive in winter–no one is happy when they’ve really got to go. Bees that have to hold it in too much poo for too long basically run the risk of poisoning themselves with their own waste. So, the second it’s warm and dry enough, bees are rushing out of the hive to go. You can almost hear them letting out a collective, “Ahhhhh.” #climateaction #beekeeper #pollinators #beekeepersgram_feature #hives #om #bee #insects_of_our_world #insects #protectthebees #beesrule #beesofinstagram #lovethybees #savethebees #saveourbees #savethebees #beekeeping #beekeeperlife #apricutores #apiary #backyardbeekeeping #beehive #honeybees #bienenvolk #imkerin #imkerei #idahome #thisisboise #damniloveboise #iamboise
Even in the healthiest of colonies, bees die every single day in winter. If you consider that your healthy colony may have 50,000 or maybe even 60,000 members going into the fall but may have only 20,000 come spring somewhere along the line you lost 30,000 to 40,000 bees. That’s a bunch. Just for giggles late, I’ll take the smaller colony 30,000 and divide it by 182, which is the number of days in October, November, December, January, February, and March. That gives me 164 bee deaths per day. The larger colony number of 40,000 gives me 220 bee deaths per day. Of course, these numbers are approximations. Nearly every day I walk up there (for my benefit more than theirs) and I flick the dead bees off the landing boards. What I’ve noticed is that a new pile of bees every day is a signal that all is (potentially) well inside. Only a healthy colony has the beepower to dispatch undertaker bees to clean up the bodies. On warmer days they fly them off and drop them on the ground, but on colder days they just shove them out the entrance. #climateaction #beekeeper #pollinators #beekeepersgram_feature #hives #om #bee #insects_of_our_world #insects #protectthebees #beesrule #beesofinstagram #lovethybees #savethebees #saveourbees #savethebees #beekeeping #beekeeperlife #apricutores #apiary #backyardbeekeeping #beehive #honeybees #bienenvolk #imkerin #imkerei #idahome #thisisboise #damniloveboise #iamboise.
Honey bees' wings stroke 11,400 times per minute, thus making their distinctive buzz.

A sugar board, also known as a candy board, is used as a food source when your honey bees need winter food. Honey bees need plenty of honey to get through the cold winter months. They have ample food sources during the warm months but rely on their stores of honey in the winter. When they don’t have enough honey stores, honey bees can starve to death. A sugar board is a simple solution to keep your bees thriving until the weather warms up. Sugar boards consist of a frame, hardware cloth, sugar and an entrance hole for your honey bees. The candy board is installed on top of the beehive.

Today I introduced a ripe queen to the bee colony that I split yesterday. Cell came from Treasure Valley Beekeepers Club (TVBC). TVBC is in the sixth season of a cooperative association with the Apiary Program of the Washington State University (WSU) Entomology Department. The WSU breeding program is focused toward developing honey bee stocks that exhibit a measure of resistance or tolerance to common honey bee pathogens and parasites. This is one of many programs designed to enhance US honey bee diversity through importation of honey bee semen from Old World sources, evaluation of progeny and release of germplasm to the queen production industry. #climateaction #beekeeper #pollinators #beekeepersgram_feature #hives #om #bee #insects_of_our_world #insects #protectthebees #beesrule #beesofinstagram #lovethybees #savethebees #saveourbees #savethebees #beekeeping #beekeeperlife #apricutores #apiary #backyardbeekeeping #beehive #honeybees #bienenvolk #imkerin #imkerei #idahome #thisisboise #damniloveboise #iamboise.
