This guy opened a hydrant to wash this machine. Most of this treated water spills onto the clay and runs into the storm pond at the southern end of this former corn field. Meanwhile giant pumps siphon millions of gallons out of the Oak Ridges Moraine aquifer to make way for the "Big Pipe" sewer line.

I finally got to use my 14mm wide angle lens to make for an interesting photo. Location George Hill Road, Lancaster, MA

Takes clockwise turning to open, apparently. Looks freshly painted, although it's dry to the touch. I really like the shape and color of this cap -- it's a work of modern sculpture in a practical application.

where's the fire?

I learned something today! As I was taking photos of these fire hydrants, our mayor stopped by and we talked. He explained to me that the different colors on hydrants represented the amount of pressure at that hydrant! Blue hydrants have the most pressure, at 500 lbs. The black hydrants in our town are dead; replaced when they installed a new water system. At the time this was done (years ago), the old hydrants were not removed and now caused confusion for the firefighters. Our present mayor solved this problem by having all 25 of the dry hydrants in our town painted black!
