Hydrangea macrophylla is a species of flowering plant in the family Hydrangeaceae, native to Japan. Common names include bigleaf hydrangea, French hydrangea, lacecap hydrangea, mophead hydrangea, penny mac and hortensia. It is widely cultivated in many parts of the world in many climates.

Old fashioned and easily recognized, these showy, 10-inch flowers have graced American gardens for hundreds of years.
Native to the eastern United States, they are technically called Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle', but are commonly called Annabelles or Snowballs.
We have two stands of them in our landscape and they never disappoint.

Garden Hydrangea. It changes its color due to the acidity of the soil.

Bij de achterdeur staat een grote hortensiastruik. Een bloem daarvan is weer gaan bloeien of bloeit nog steeds. Een lichtpuntje in deze korte en soms donkere dagen.
Going outside I first see a large bush of the Hydrangea. In these short days there is one flower still blooming bright and pink. So I made a picture of this flower to share some brightness with you.

most of the flowers on our hydrangea are now papery and a paler shade of brown but this one is clinging on to colour

Late blooming hydrangea. This little plant seems to be a few weeks behind the other hydrangea in our area but is providing a small splash of colour.
