Hydrangea macrophylla 'Schneeball' hydrangea (syn. Hydrangea Snowball)
Shrubby hydrangeas brighten borders in mid to late summer with their showy, but delicate, long-lasting flowers in shades of pink, white or blue. Many have attractive autumn colour and leaf shape.
Climbing hydrangeas flower in summer and are well suited for covering north and east-facing walls. Most popular is the fully hardy Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris. Evergreen Hydrangea seemannii and Hydrangea serratifolia need shelter as they are prone to cold damage.
I took this in the park on E's birthday - I've been looking for a hydrangea to photograph (inspired by the lovely Tracey) and this was the best I could find. I put a couple in my garden this year but they haven't really got going yet.

The Hydrangeas did very well this year, although in general the heads are smaller probably due to the hot summer.
Now some have been dried and form a lovely dash of colour in the room.
Hydrangea, the name, comes from the Greek words "hydro" or water, and "angeion," or vase = water vase, they prefer a lot of water.
A very ancient plant, found in fossils going back thousands of years.
Flower lovers will know that there is a flower language.
Every sentiment is expressed in one form or another by delicate blooms.
Of course, even the experts disagree on the "true meaning" of many flowers and most have different meanings to different people.
So, while all flowers convey thoughtfulness and love, a gift of flowers for a special someone will always create its own personal meaning, too.

A bouquet of freshly picked garden hydrangea captures the late afternoon sun rays sneaking through a west-facing window.
The warm sun of Summer is still stroking us occasionally, Autumn sneaked upon us, but it is here, the calendar tells me.
I look up, I look down, the leaves are turning, the leaves are falling, less and less flowers, drying up, discolouring...from green to yellow, from green to orange, from yellow to orange, from orange to red, they all end up brown and dead.
These Hydrangea, if cut at the right time will give you a Winter-long pleasure of colour!

I have used an old German projector lens, A Rodenstock Splendar 100mm f2.8 , It was a bit complicated to build an adapter.
