A late September 2018 visit to Packwood House, another National Trust property. Been meaning to visit this one myself for a while now!
A nice cool Sunday afternoon to visit Packwood.
Packwood House is a timber-framed Tudor manor house near Lapworth, Warwickshire. Owned by the National Trust since 1941, the house is a Grade I listed building. It has a wealth of tapestries and fine furniture, and is known for the garden of yews.
The house began as a modest timber-framed farmhouse constructed for John Fetherston between 1556 and 1560. The last member of the Fetherston family died in 1876. In 1904 the house was purchased by Birmingham industrialist Alfred Ash. It was inherited by Graham Baron Ash (Baron in this case being a name not a title) in 1925, who spent the following two decades creating a house of Tudor character. He purchased an extensive collection of 16th- and 17th-century furniture, some obtained from nearby Baddesley Clinton. The great barn of the farm was converted into a Tudor-style hall with sprung floor for dancing, and was connected to the main house by the addition of a Long Gallery in 1931.
In 1941, Ash donated the house and gardens to the National Trust in memory of his parents but continued to live in the house until 1947 when he moved to Wingfield Castle.

El pueblo de El Toboso (Toledo), ha vivido un largo fin de semana, desde el viernes al domingo (17,18, y 19 de febrero), celebrando su tradicional Carnaval, fiestas populares y religiosas en torno a San Antón y San Sebastián.
Se combinan los festejos religiosos con los actos lúdicos dentro de una programación donde han destacado la alta participación en todos los actos. En los desfiles de carnaval, tanto el infantil como el juvenil, así como en los bailes con orquestas y charangas que se han celebrado tanto por las tardes como hasta la madrugada.
En el desfile infantil brillaron tres comparsas con diversidad temática como de actualidad, resultando vencedor el grupo de los Carnavalitos, con la fantasía “Señales Divertidas”, conjunto de señales de tráfico, propuestas para una mejora de la circulación vial en las calles toboseñas; la escuela infantil “Cuan de Dulcinea” los niños de la guardería y de la ludoteca, realizaron una plástica representación de los diferentes modalidades de trabajo, con el título “Oficios varios”; el grupo de los Carnavalitos nos trajeron la representación de la serie televisiva, “El mundo de Pipi”.
La desapacible y lluviosa tarde del día grande, no impidió que las comparsas de Adultos y Jóvenes desfilaran el desfile y presentación, como la puesta en escena y recitar las coplas, se realizaron en la ermita de San Sebastián ante más de mil quinientas personas.
Tres grupos: ‘La Plaza’, ‘Las de siempre’ y ‘Los Tobarretas’. Tres temáticas diferentes: “Welcome to New York”, “El Gran Prix” de la televisión y “Las Tunas” de Salamanca, que deleitaron con las coplillas, las actuaciones ante el jurado y su puesta en escena, son parte de las tradiciones que hacen diferente y peculiar a este Carnaval.
La lluvia fue protagonista del final del Carnaval, pues impidió el tradicional entierro de la Sardina, pero un animado y participativo baile del mediodía en su honor en el Palacio del Carnaval, supuso un magnífico cierre a la diversión en todos los locales del municipio.
En la ermita del Santo, el ofertorio de regalos, puja de los mismo y el sorteo de las papeletas fueron los últimos actos de unos carnavales dónde una vez más destacaron las ganas de fiesta de todo el pueblo toboseño y los que se desplazan de los pueblos de la comarcas manchegas toledanas, conquenses y ciudadrealeñas.
Hasta mediados del mes de febrero permanecerá abierta en el Museo Cervantino, una exposición de fotografías en torno a los últimos carnavales toboseños de la Asociación fotográfica Kintafoto de Quintanar de la Orden y los fotógrafos aficionados locales, Pepe Martínez y Genaro Leo.
Dentro de las actividades culturales, se realizó una conferencia sobre la vida de San Sebastián, a cargo de Ángel Novillo Prisuelos, académico Correspondiente de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes y Ciencias Históricas de Toledo.

Hartlepool is a north east sea port 12 km north of Middlesbrough, founded in the 7th century AD. It became the official port of the County Palatine of Durham. The developing shipbuilding industry in West Hartlepool made it a target for the Germans in the First World War. Rapid industrial decline occurred after World War Two, resulting in much unemployment and dereliction. During the 1990s massive public investment revitalised the town, resulting in improved prospects.
• The "Big" Wesleyan Chapel built in 1872, stands on Clarence Street, no longer a thoroughfare. John and his brother Charles Wesley were serious god botherers who lived during the 18th century. They established a brand of tub-thumping, charismatic, preaching that garnered a considerable following. It became the Methodist sect, spawning many grand buildings like this one, throughout England.

Després va tornar a ser destinat a la seva funció original: protegir del Sol les plantes més delicades.
L'UMBRACLE: Projectat per Josep Fontseré i construït per Josep Amargós, formà part, juntament amb l'Hiivernacle i el Museu Martorell de Geologia, del programa museístic integrat dins del programa global d'ordenació de la Ciutadella que dissenyà el mateix Josep Fontseré l'any 1872. La seva estructura es feta per pilars de foneria i bigues corbades de ferro, lligades per jàsseres del mateix material que conformen una volta amb cinc arcs, un de gran central, i dos de més petits a cada costat. La volta és coberta per un enllistonat de fusta generador d'un joc de clarobscurs que recrea la penombra dels boscos tropicals i subtropicals, l'hàbitat on viuen les espècies que s'hi cultiven. Les façanes de maons i les grans portalades de fusta tanquen aquest edifici, únic en el seu gènere. L'any 1988, amb motiu del Centenari de l'Exposició Universal, va ser restaurat per Parcs i Jardins de l'Ajuntament de Barcelona respectant integrament el projecte original i enriquint el seu contingut amb noves espècies vegetals que completen un magnífic catàleg verd, dels qual cal destacar: Livistona chinensis, Beaucarnea recurvata, Strelitzia alba, Howea forsteriana, Phoenix roebelenii.

The Grandy Boat Company was formerly located on Lake Union in Seattle, and made many hundreds of boats both large and small during a long tenure there from the early 1920's to 1967.

Our students build these boats to lines and documentation taken by former instructor Tim Lee, from an original boat owned by The Center For Wooden Boats www.cwb.org in Seattle WA.
Grandy skiffs built by our students are usually between 9 and 14.5 feet long. They're lapstrake planked in western red cedar, with sapele stems, keels and transoms. Frames are White Oak or Black Locust. We build one to two boats like this each year. These small craft are some of our most popular boats.
The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding is located in Port Hadlock WA and is a private, accredited non-profit vocational school. You can find us on the web at www.nwboatschool.org .
Our mission is to teach and preserve the skills and crafts of fine wooden boatbuilding and other traditional maritime crafts.
We build both commissioned and speculative boats to US Coast Guard standards while teaching adult students the traditional wood and wood composite boatbuilding skills they will need to work in the marine trades. My Ride had a cold miss on cold mornings. It only missed for about 30 seconds then would run just fine. I figure it was needing a tune-up since it has over 135k miles and I'm sure it has never had one. Cost me around $50 in parts; a new distributor cap, ignition rotor, 6 spark plugs and spark plug wires. I bought them from NAPA. Took me a couple of hours. The hardest thing about it was the console cover. Pain to remove and install because of the carpeting.

The Hamiltonian versus Jeffersonian struggle that began in 1776 still rages between the Jeffersonian South and the Hamiltonian/Keynesian Northeast, Rustbelt and West Coast. If we take the body of evidence as a whole we can see that Southerners are not just a peculiar sub-culture within the United States. Southerners are a nation of their own, as distinctive from New Englanders or Californians as many free nations are from one another. It is in our interests to be free, to govern our own affairs and control our own future.

■珈琲に合う水とは、
googleでこのキーワードで調べてみると次にようになりました。
：コーヒーに合う水とは、新鮮な水（くみたての水）であること、カルキ臭の余計な臭いや味がないこと、の２点が基本的なポイントです。くみたての新鮮な水は、適度な空気を含むことによって、柔らかい味わいのコーヒーになります。そのため、水道の水が美味しいところでは、水道水をそのままお使い下さい。但し、カルキ臭等の異臭がある場合には、一度浄水器を通したほうがよいでしょう。抽出に使用する水によってコーヒーの味は変化しますので、お好みのコーヒーの味によって水を選んで頂いた方がよいでしょう。また、最近流行のアルカリイオン水などの硬度の高い水でコーヒーを抽出すると、味が大幅に変わってしまいますのでお勧めしません。

水の硬度とは・・・・
水に含まれているカルシウムイオンとマグネシウムイオンの合計を炭酸カルシウムの量に 換算したもので、１リットル当たり～１００ｍｇが軟水と呼ばれています。ちなみに１００～３００ｍｇを中硬水、３００ｍｇ～を硬水と言います。

月山自然水 は、硬度 約23mg/L で軟水のようです。
調べるまでは、何の疑いも持たず、天然のミネラルウォーターでいれた珈琲は、うまい！！と自慢していました。超硬水だったらどうしよう と思ったけど、やっぱり 珈琲に合う水だった。

志津温泉に行くには、月山道（国道112号線）沿 寒河江から行くと、ダムを越えて を越えて、寒河江ダムドライブインのところに、駐車場/バス停車場があります。そこから、右にはいる、志津温泉/月山山小屋への登れます。通常、お忙しい方とかは、右に曲がってすぐの汲み場で汲むのが言いと思います。志津温泉は、そこから20分ほど上りますので、私は、さらに上流の月山スキー場の所まで行きます。
ここで、どこでもいいので、水を汲みます。どこも同じ水源から引いているそうなので、いつもは、ここの蛇口から引いています。ありがとうございます。

Tropical Lab is an annual camp that brings together postgraduate students from some of the world’s leading art institutions for a two-week period of intense artistic experimentation and research. This exhibition—displayed across three galleries of the ICA Singapore—presented works by participants in this year’s camp.
The works explore the geopolitics, geography and symbolic associations of islands. In art and literature, islands are often used as locations and metaphors for utopic ideas and narratives, their geographical isolation evoking sensations and concepts of freedom, remove and displacement. Yet such images of isolation are also countered by the increasingly connective role of island states in the twenty-first century as hubs for international trade and migration. The works in the exhibition reflect on these various ideas and associations through a range of media and approaches.

El Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Caridad
Es un importante centro de la devoción católica local, pues se trata del santuario donde reside la imagen de Nuestra Señora de la Caridad Coronada que, tras una larga serie de milagros, fue proclamada en 1618 patrona de Sanlúcar de Barrameda y de todos los estados de la Casa de Medina-Sidonia. El año 1965, la imagen fue coronada canónicamente por el CardenalArzobispo de Sevilla Bueno Monreal, por concesión del papa Pablo VI y fue designada alcaldesa perpetua de la ciudad. En 1997 el santuario fue elevado a la dignidad de basílica menor por breve del papa Juan Pablo II. El año 2002 el mismo pontífice proclamó a la Virgenpatrona canónica de la ciudad. El santuario de la Caridad es una pieza fundamental delConjunto histórico-artístico de Sanlúcar de Barrameda, declarado como tal en 1973.
Fundación
El templo fue construido entre los años 1609 y 1613 por el el arquitecto Alonso de Vandelvira, maestro mayor de la Casa de Medina-Sidonia, en estilo manierista. Sus patronos fueron Alonso Pérez de Guzmán el Bueno y Zúñiga, VII Duque de Medina-Sidoniay su mujer Ana de Silva y Mendoza, cuyos restos mortales reposan en él. El santuario era una fundación propia de la Casa Ducal, gobernada por capellanes nombrados directamente por el duque, cuyo numero estaba entre los diez y los doce. Junto con la iglesia, existía un hospital de mujeres, un colegio de niñas huérfanas y otro de niños. La iglesia contaba con una capilla musical formada por diversas voces e instrumentos.
Descripción del edificio
El material de construcción que predomina es el ladrillo y la mampostería, aunque las portadas, el campanario, la cubierta y los enmarques de ventanas están realizados en cantería. La planta del santuario es de cruz latina, con una sola nave a la que se abre capillas. El crucero está cubierto por una cúpula casi plana sin tambor, coronada por linterna. El exterior de esta iglesia es bastante sobrio y en él destacan la torre y sus dos portadas. La fábrica es de ladrillo encalado y de piedra, reservándose este material en las portadas, molduras de los vanos, cornisas y antepechos.
La portada de los pies está formada por un arco de medio punto, a cuyos lados se superponen nichos con esculturas dispuestos entre columnas adosadas jónicas en el primer cuerpo y entre pilastras corintias en el segundo. La portada lateral del lado del evangelio, situada tras el muro y reja del compás, es más sencilla y está formada por un hueco adintelado. Esta portada consta de dos cuerpos, el inferior con un ancho entablamento sobre el que se dispone un frontón curvo partido y de donde arranca una alta hornacina muy plana, que se eleva en el paramento entre pináculos y se remata con un frontón recto.
La torre, realizada en piedra, consta de dos cuerpos. El primero es de base cuadrada con un hueco en cada frente y el segundo octogonal, prácticamente ciego y rematado por un cupulín. En su composición se utilizan pilastras adosadas.
Bienes muebles
En el interior de la iglesia destaca el retablo del Altar mayor, de estilo muy clásico, formado por tres cuerpos, tres calles y ático y decorado con pinturas alusivas a la vida de la Virgen y relicarios. El programa iconográfico se completa en los diversos altares y paramentos con diversas pinturas, como el Árbol de Jesé, en parangón con el árbol genealógico de los guzmanes, la resurrección de Cristo y otros. Asimismo el santuario ha contado tradicionalmente con una importante colección de reliquias y piezas de orfebrería donadas por la Casa de Medina-Sidonia.
Entre estas piezas realizadas entre los siglos XVII y XX, destaca el templete en que procesiona el 15 de agosto la Virgen de la Caridad, el altar, el frontal, el sagrario y los seis candelabros de plata del altar mayor. Asimismo es importante el juego compuesto por una cruz procesional y ciriales realizado en el mismo metal.
Hermandades
En el santuario radican la Hermandad de Nuestra Señora de la Caridad, así como la Hermandad del Nazareno de Sanlucar y la Hermandad de la Humildad y Paciencia.
Pannenhoef bos
Korte beschrijving
Van de veertiende tot de zeventiende eeuw werd in dit deel van Brabant de hele laag hoogveen afgegraven tot de zandondergrond. Er ontwikkelde zich moerasheide waar weinigen een bestaansgrond vonden. Vanaf 1800 werden de onafzienbare heidevelden geleidelijk ontgonnen tot cultuurland en bos. Van 1900 tot 1940 verhevigde de ontginningsintensiteit. In het kader van de werkverschaffing werden de vennen en overige lage delen opgehoogd met zand van hoge koppen als de Lokkerberg.
Door het verbreden en verdiepen van het beekje de Bijloop werd het gebied ontwaterd. Op de drooggevallen venbodem van De Lokker ontwikkelde zich natte heide, rietland, gagelstruweel en moerasbos van wilgen, elzen en berken. Door het plaatsen van stuwen in de Bijloop steeg het waterpeil van deze beek aanzienlijk. De kalk- en ijzerrijke kwel van de hogere gronden werd niet langer door de beek 'weggevangen'. Het verzuurde moeras van De Lokker werd er weer mee gevoed, wat zorgde voor een herstel van de amfibienstand en een uitbreiding van planten als wateraardbei, moeraswederik en moerasviooltje. Sinds enkele jaren vliegen er weer weide- en bosbeekjuffers boven de Bijloop. Zomertaling, blauwborst, waterral en roodborsttapuit broeden er.
Toen Brabants landschap het landgoed in 1970 kon verwerven, was nog maar circa 100 hectare woeste grond over. Door geleidelijk aan landbouwgronden uit de pacht te nemen, konden wij vanaf 1995 verscheidene verdwenen vennen opnieuw uitgraven. De afgelopen 12 jaar zijn maar liefst 11 vennen uit de dood herrezen. Vele zeldzame planten keerden weer terug uit de ondergrondse zaadbank: blauwe knoop, teer guichelheil, moerashertshooi, heidekartelblad en pilvaren zijn slechts enkele voorbeelden.
Om de bijzondere plantengroei blijvend te behouden wordt er kleinschalig geplagd en begrazen Schotse hooglanders en laaglanders (Galloways) en IJslandse pony's het gebied het jaar rond. Boven de hernieuwde vennen vliegen veel libellen, waaronder bloedrode en bruinrode heidelibel. Typische heidebewoners als levendbarende hagedis, heideblauwtje en bont dikkopje kunnen weer migreren en hun populaties voorzien van 'vers bloed'.
Het hoge, droge deel van de Pannenhoef bestaat grotendeels uit bos dat qua soortensamenstelling en leeftijdsopbouw gevarieerd is en veel dood hout kent. Dat vertaalt zich in een hoge broeddichtheid van zangvogels en spechten.
Het open weidegebied het Rondgors moet een verbindingsschakel worden tussen de Pannenhoef en de Vloeiweide. Bij piekafvoeren krijgt het tevens een waterbergingsfunctie. De voormalige gemeentebossen van Etten-Leur vormen een belangrijke droge verbindingsschakel tussen beide landgoederen.

For the week I will be posting some works of my good friend Patrick Cheah who went on a journey to witness the ceremony of the beatification of John Paul II, the biggest event in Vatican City since his death six years ago. His journey starts from Milan.
