Light show in Beaubourg by Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist, called "A la belle étoile". The 10mn show will be projected every night from 7pm to 8am until Feb. 26. Tip: pretend you're going to the restaurant on the 6th floor and stop at the 5th floor, which is opened and from where you can see the show from above without any glasses interfering :-) The previous link is also offering a webcam of the show.

Rather than recap our serendipitous meeting last week by the sea, I'm going to quote something from one of his web pages.

As an aside, while I was into my *zone*, trying to capture the almost non-existent sunset, I was prompted to shoot other interesting scenery in the area! As I walked up the street, this gentleman approached me to ask if I had taken his photo! Well, I hesitated, because I hadn't remembered specifically capturing him, as I was more focused on the building in the background!
I asked *John* if he had wished I'd taken his photo, and I'd be happy to use my iPhone, instead of my Canon, so I could e-mail him a copy! He was very excited and wanted to know how to *pose* to which I responded, "Any way you wish!" . . .
So here you have it! We proceeded to get into a deeper conversation about health issues, his many eclectic journeys all around the world with his *Beard* competitions and championships, his run for office in Rhode Island, our common interests in sewing, and, of course, the Covid situation!
It was a lot for me to absorb, so I googled him when I returned home and was continually amazed at all he's accomplished at such a young age . . . even holding a license as a Rhode Island Private Detective and Massachusetts Reserve Deputy Sheriff!
The most fascinating coincidence was that a few days ago my husband and I were out of town at my favorite Sewing Machine
shop. While I was inside getting some pointers on my high-strung "Bernina" Richard was waiting outside and decided to go next door for a lemonade . . . lo and behold, WHO was there, but John!

i was walking across the stream when this old man with his wife, dog and grandchild saw me carrying my photo frame and camera bag. so he started talking to me, because apparently his wife likes photography and they have a whole load photo frames at his house so he gave me his address and they had a whole load of really good ones that he said he'd drop off at my house so yeah, and a new box/case thing and they were just really kind to me and even though it seems creepy, it wasnt.
the editing on this is not too good so dont stare at it for too long or look closely but aaah well.
im sleeping round my friends house tonight and i dont know who else is going but my best friend is too so it should be good. i've not slept or even been round her house in fooorever. even though she stands in my house every school day morning.

The Gecko Nebula, also known as LBN 437, resides within the Lacerta constellation and is juxtaposed with the expansive emission nebula Sh2-126, which intersects it.
On this picture, the right lobe of the Gecko Nebula boasts numerous recently formed bright stars emerging from its molecular cloud.
Within this domain, the youthful star V375 is linked to the Herbig-Haro object HH398.
These phenomena represent luminous areas of nebulosity associated with nascent stars, originating from the collision between the star's ejected gas and nearby clouds of gas and dust.
Typically, images of this nebula are displayed with a 180º rotation, but I prefer this orientation to showcase it's intricate details in a highly magnified close-up view.
It's a result of 28 hours of integration time at f/3.3 (8 hours on LRGB + 20 hours on Ha).

One of the last grand adventures taken in 2025 was to Quenca, Ecuador. My purpose there was to tell stories through photography and filmmaking. I traveled throughout the region, learning about the Indigenous Andean Culture. The country was absolutely breathtaking as my eyes and heart took in the lands of the original Kanari people. This photograph was taken while visiting the primary sacred site for Mother Mary devotion. This is the southwest part of Ecuador, 28 km from Cuenca in El Cajas National Park. The park is well known for its rugged terrain that features picturesque landscapes characterized by valleys nestled in the Grandfather Mountains of Pachamama. This was one of those photographic moments that required a fair amount of patience to compose. For me, this photograph embodies the message of presence. I titled the piece, “Myth of Tomorrow,” because we only ever have now. Yes, another important reminder because where we place our will, action, reason, and emotion determines the quality of this very moment. Tomorrow is not the experience, only the one where we stand. For the animals im sure I was an anomaly for their simple way of existence. Standing a couple of meters away, dialing in an accurate light reading, one of the subjects' attention was pulled while the other was completely absorbed in grazing. The foreground needed to be properly illuminated since the sun was directly in front of me. Just before the trip, I acquired a couple of camera flashes from Lightpix that could be wirelessly synced together, paired with the Leica M6. In addition, I was experimenting with Kodak’s Tri-X 400 film-stock & an orange filter to get stronger black and white results.

So the lucky old Ball of Light has got it's own website. I suppose it was kind of inevidable. The Ball of Light has been looking so so pretty the last couple of months.
The sighting of the Ball of Light was a special one. It ws freezing out, up in the Barossa Valley, and I wasnt expecting any more. And oh boy I was not dissapointed. The old Ball of Light was a bit shaky, but was it bright. I hope you enjoy.
(There is no photoshop manipulation of this image at all. It is taken in a single exposure. Only adjustments are to level, brightness sat etc)
I have been tagged by McAlister. Being tagged before, I am running out of things to say about myself...I think I'll have to start making stuff up soon. But for now all these 10 are true:
1. I don't like to plan in advance (sometimes it backfires...so what?).
2. No plant can survive my loving care.
3. I read a lot of cheap mystery/action novels...mostly when I travel and need to kill time at the airport.
4. I find romance novels boring even as airport reading, but at the same time I can enjoy a good chick flick.
5. I am a total political junkie.
6. I like silly useless things and people who don't take themselves too seriously.
7. I make sure I try local beer in every country I travel to (the one in this picture is Ethiopian).
8. As you can see I travel a lot - this is because I work in international public health...reproductive health to be more specific (many contacts asked me what I do, so here it is).
9. I love gadgets and usually can figure out how they work without reading a manual (because I am too lazy to read it...or impatient...or both).
10. English is not my first language and I was born in country that does not exist anymore :P

Notes: Many of the features previously more easily visible can now be accessed by clicking on You (in the top line menu) and on the three dots (on the right-hand side of the page). And if you want to see your photostream against a white background but lacking the links to Collections and EXIF data that used to appear on the right-hand side, click Edit.
New Note: A just realized that when you go to someone's photostream and mouse over photos, if photos have more than 99 views or more than 99 favorites, all that shows is "99+". And when you go to the photo, it shows the actual numbers of views but not the actual number of faves. I administer a group called Worth a Million Words Pix (which as then co-administrator, I inherited when imapix died), the qualifications for which are a minimum of 1,000 views and 100 faves. Instead of freezing the group in place, I'm just going to assume that 99+ means at least 100, so a photo would still be eligible for invitation into the group. But it's ridiculous not to know how many actual faves a photo has received.
New Note 2: A new horrible loss I just noticed: If you click on a Set (e.g., my set for Zoe Bear), the only part of the description of the set that shows is the first line. That is just a tiny fraction of my description, and the rest of it can now be seen only by going into Collections > the collection in which you think you added the set > Zoe Bear (for example) > Edit. But the description is visible to yourself only. The same holds true for any set for which people have created descriptions longer than a single line.
Okay, Edit to New Note 2, with thanks to annkelliot: When you go to a set and hover the mouse over the end of that single-line description, a box appears with the rest of the description. That's a relief! But like almost everything on the new Flickr, one must search for what used to be immediately visible and user friendly and intuitive.
EDIT, 5/22/13. As you can see in this replaced image, I've decided to stay here and not migrate all my photos to, say, Ipernity. I'm also on Facebook and Google Plus and 500px, but as I've said before, Flickr is my home. It is where I began my life in social media and where I have learned so much from you and have been inspired by you and have become friends with so many of you. I hope many of you will also choose to stay here.
EDIT #2, 5/22/13. Last night I participated in (my first) Google hangout about the new Flickr changes. It was moderated by blogger and old-time Flickr user, Thomas Hawk. I think the participants in the hangout were among the few who like the new format. Certainly about 99% of the 17,350+ who so far have commented in the Flickr help forum thread do not like the changes at all.
EDIT #3, 5/26/13. Three useful tips from lucycat (who hasn't posted here since May 2) that I found on her Facebook page:
1) If you go to someone else's photostream, you can just add '?details=1' to the end of that URL, and you have the old layout, though without any sets [or collections or summary EXIF data. It's the same layout you get when you click Edit on your own photo].
2) Once you're in a Set, click on the white balloon on the right side of the toolbar; that takes you to a different page where you can click on "Details" and that gets you an old-style layout for the set, complete with pages.
3) Do everything in a new tab, and close the tab when you're done. If you navigate out of a photo you will be dropped back in New Flickr mishmash hell.
EDIT #4, 5/30/13: This is what Flickr staffer Thea Lamkin wrote on the forum thread: "To put an end to speculation, and to hopefully give some people closure, the old site is not coming back. However, we will continue to improve upon the new pages, from their usability to their overall performance. These changes will be made according to a balance of qualitative feedback and data, both of which we are monitoring closely."
EDIT #5, 7/1/13. Just when I thought it couldn't get worse, suddenly there appeared a Yahoo toolbar on top of the Flickr toolbar, a design monstrosity and something akin to advertising (or at least promotion), to which as a Pro member I'm not supposed to be subjected.

It had been a while since I experienced snow in the winter. A recent trip to the Sierras brought back memories of snowy winters spent on the East Coast, helped me recharge my batteries and provided me a much needed chance to dust the cobwebs off of my cameras. The snow covered landscapes were such a joy! In this scene, shot with my DJI Mini 3 pro, I was drawn by the contrast of the white snow on the ground against the warm light of the setting sun shining on the tree tops on the side of the mountains

Willrow Hood is a background character in The Empire Strikes Back who is seen very briefly running through the halls of Cloud City after Lando orders the evacuation. Over the years he developed a bit of a cult following, with fans nicknaming him “Ice Cream Maker Guy” due to the late-70s frozen dessert maker he carries with him as he makes his escape.
As his popularity grew, the character was officially named and given a back story. A fan website sprung up, too, its sole purpose to petition Hasbro to create a figure of the infamous Ice Cream Maker Guy.
It worked. Willrow Hood has been in immortalized in plastic and is now hitting store shelves. Oddly, I’ve chosen to commemorate this by casting him in… Lego. :D

I've been hanging out with folks in the Polaroid scene, past six months or so. Some of 'em have YouTube pages, or podcasts, followings. They've been at it for five years, or seven years, some folks are new to it, some folks are older, some are younger.
I'll be talking to them, worker among workers, that's how I like to describe it, how I try to think about myself when I'm hanging out with other artists.
Then I'll pull this image out of the archives to talk about here and realize it was fifteen fucking years ago...and at that point I'd already been taking photos seriously for five years? That I've been at this a long goddamn time! And I'm not tired of it!
Lot's changed, so much. At the time of this photo, I was living in a tiny apartment (albeit in a great neighborhood, with some fun neighbors), I was driving an old old car that had over 300,000 miles on it, I probably had a month's worth of rent in the bank, if that.
But I'd met so many people online, I had friends coming out my ears.
I didn't have all I wanted, but I had what I needed. I was very lucky. Maybe that's one of the biggest lessons of my twenty year journey: Make as many friends as possible. Meet people as much as you're able. Put yourself out there, no matter how shy you feel you are.
Everyone involved in this photo was someone I met because I was crazy online. Messaging people, texting people, IMing people, talking to people, commenting on other people's photos, talking to people, that was really my main hobby. Photography was a side benefit to all the people I've gotten to hang out with.
This photo, much as I like it (why did I wait 15 years to post it????), this is nothing compared to the great time we had, that day. The good times are waiting for us all...
The park contains the tallest sand dunes in North America, rising about 750 feet (230 m) from the floor of the San Luis Valley on the western base of the Sangre de Cristo Range, covering about 19,000 acres (77 km²). They are perhaps 12,000 years old.
The dunes were formed from sand deposits of the Rio Grande and its tributaries, flowing through the San Luis Valley. Over the ages, westerly winds picked up sand particles from the river flood plain. As the wind lost power before crossing the Sangre de Cristo Range, the sand was deposited on the east edge of the valley. This process continues, and the dunes are slowly growing. The wind changes the shape of the dunes daily.
There are several streams flowing on the perimeter of the dunes. The streams erode the edge of the dune field, and sand is carried downstream. The water disappears into the ground, depositing sand on the surface. Winds pick up the deposits of sand, and blow them up onto the dune field once again.
Digging a few inches into the dunes even at their peaks reveals wet sand. If the streams were to dry up, the dunes would disappear; in fact part of the motivation of turning the Monument into a National Park was the extra protection of the water, which Colorado's cities and agriculture covet. -Wikipedia

A Five-Year Photographic Journey with the M4/3 Series.
Frustración. Esta fotografía la he subido porque he consultado a mi mujer y a ella le gusta. Pero no es lo que esperaba. Ayer disfrutamos (familia y amigos) de un fantástico día de senderismo en el Norte de la provincia de Burgos. Fuimos a pasear por el llamado "Monumento Natural de Monte Santiago", en el linde de las provincias de Vizcaya (puerto de Orduña) y Burgos (Berberana). Entre las atracciones de este enclave natural, la más sobresaliente es el Salto del Nervión, que en pocas ocasiones, tras fuertes lluvias o abundante deshielo, vierte sus aguas al vacío en una espectacular cascada de 270 metros de altura. Habíamos visitado la zona hace años, pero en aquella ocasión el cauce estaba completamente seco.
Ayer fue diferente. No llevaba mucho caudal, pero si lo suficiente para poder contemplar de un bello espectáculo.
El único problema es que era Domingo, hacía un tiempo estupendo, y ese lugar está perfectamente urbanizado y señalizado...... mis "amigos" los turistas y domingueros tenían el lugar invadido.
Tenía intención de sacar unas fotos de este salto (sabéis de mi pasión por las cascadas) pero habrá que volver en mejores condiciones (¿tal vez de noche, nevando y con tormenta eléctrica?). Era tal la cantidad de gente que rodeaba el lugar que intentar colocar el trípode y tomarme mi tiempo para componer la escena, configurar la cámara, colocar los filtros y demás fueron tarea imposible. Una auténtica romería de: papás con cochecitos de bebé, excursiones de jubilados, parejas de pijos con ropa técnica de marca para pasar noche en el campamento avanzado de la ascensión al Anapurna, otros con zapatos de vestir y pantalones de tergal con raya al medio, gente disfrazada con pelucas de colores fluorescentes, cámaras compactas iluminando la cascada cincuenta metros más abajo con sus potentes flashes, graciosillos saltando sobre la plataforma metálica que forma el balcón (el mejor sitio para fotografiar la cascada desde esa posición). Vamos, como la Gran Vía de Madrid en época navideña.
Afortunadamente el resto del día fue completamente diferente. Después de comer nos alejamos de ese bosque de hayas convertido en parque temático en que se ha convertido el Monte Santiago, y llegamos al cercano Valle de Mena y su preciosa cascada de Peñaladros, en Cozuela, donde el río San Miguel cae en un salto de unos quince metros a una gran poza de aguas verdosas.
Esta cascada ya la conocía, pero no me canso de contemplarla. Me parece de las más vistosas de la zona, aunque no sea la más alta, ni la más ancha.
El único problema es que no conseguí una composición que me dejase satisfecho. El problema de estos ríos de montaña es que su acceso suele ser complicado, y la vegetación lo envuelve todo, haciendo muy difícil conseguir fotografiar la cascada desde una posición que permita componer la escena con todos los elementos bien dispuestos y sin estorbos que arruinen el conjunto.
Para esta toma me planté en mitad del río, con los pies en el agua (si visitas mi blog me verás....), y aún así no me gusta el resultado. La luz tampoco ayudó mucho, pero algo he aprendido: tengo que comprar otras botas de montaña que sean totalmente impermeables......

Masjid Sultan (Malay for Sultan Mosque; is located at Muscat Street and North Bridge Road within the Kampong Glam district of Rochor Planning Area in Singapore. The mosque is considered one of the most important mosques in Singapore. The prayer hall and domes highlight the mosque's star features.
Architect Denis Santry of Swan and Maclaren adopted a Saracenic style, incorporating minarets and balustrades. The mosque was completed after four years in 1928.
Sultan Mosque has stayed essentially unchanged since it was built, with only repairs carried out to the main hall in the 1960s and an annex added in 1993. It was gazetted as a national monument on 14 March 1975.

The Vulturine Guineafowl (Acryllium vulturinum) is the largest and most spectacular of the guineafowl bird family. It is a resident breeder in northeast Africa, from southern Ethiopia through Kenya and just into northern Tanzania.
It breeds in dry and open habitats with scattered bushes and trees, such as savannah or grassland. It lays its usually 4-8 cream-coloured eggs in a well-hidden grass-lined scrape.
although all other guineafowl have unfeathered heads, this species looks particularly like a vulture because of the long bare neck and head.
The slim neck projects from a cape of long, glossy, blue and white hackles. The breast is cobalt blue, and the rest of the body plumage is black, finely spangled with white.
The sexes are similar, although the female is usually slightly smaller than the male and with smaller tarsal spurs. Young birds are mainly grey-brown, with a duller blue breast and short hackles.
Vulturine Guineafowl is a gregarious species, forming flocks outside the breeding season typically of about 25 birds. This species' food is seeds and small invertebrates. This guineafowl is terrestrial, and will run rather than fly when alarmed. Despite the open habitat, it tends to keep to cover, and roosts in trees. It makes loud chink-chink-chink-chink-chink calls.

Hey guys, this shot was done with 2 exposures blended in photomatix than I blended the 2 photos with the HDR photo to fix some ghosting. Some more adjustment were made in LR4. Filter used - Fotodiox wonderpana and hand held graduated lee filter.
