The beneficial effects of green tea are well documented. However, most research has reported the effects of green tea brewed solely from leaves or leaf extracts. We focused on tea roots and developed a hydroponic system to explore the effect on roots that biosynthesize one of the rarest functional amino acids, theanine. The level of theanine in tea roots was much higher than in leaves, which was analyzed using HPLC. Moreover, a higher level of theanine was detected in white rootlets than in lignified roots. Thus, tea roots cultured hydroponically in a controlled environment might be considered a natural drug containing theanine, which could lead to synergistic effects with other ingredients of the root. This novel medicinal material from the roots demonstrates a significant medical function for tea that extends beyond its leaves.

Ulam raja (Cosmos caudatus) is used traditionally for improving blood circulation. In this study, it was found that ulam raja had extremely high antioxidant capacity of about 2400 mg L-ascorbic acid equivalent antioxidant capacity (AEAC) per 100 g of fresh sample. Antioxidant peaks in extract of ulam raja were firstly characterized using free radical spiking test through high performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (MS). Upon reaction with 2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) free radicals, intensities of antioxidant peaks will be significantly reduced. HPLC/MSn was further applied to elucidate the chemical structures of antioxidant peaks characterized in the spiking test. More than twenty antioxidants were identified in ulam raja, and their chemical structures were proposed. The major antioxidants in ulam raja were attributed to a number of proanthocyanidins that existed as dimers through hexamers, quercetin glycosides, chlorogenic, neo-chlorogenic, crypto-chlorogenic acid and (+)-catching. High content of antioxidants antioxidants contained in ulam raja could be partly responsible for its ability to reduce oxidative stress.

Somehow for the last three years I've sort of flown under the radar for chemistry lab jobs - e.g., "HPLC Guru" when no one in our lab even used the HPLC. My free ride was discovered, however, and I became the "Pre-weekend" stalk up girl. Basically I take a shopping list to the local chem stores every Friday and pick up whatever's needed. It's pretty gross - not only is it in a dingy basement, but I'm fairly certain that filling 24 L of acetone and hexane from big flammable barrels can't be the healthiest thing that I've ever done. Also - if you take a moment for the chemical inventory you may notice that there's a "...ch" and some grapes on a bottle. That's right - some random chemical is being stored in a Welch's grape jam jar.
