The rose hip, or rose haw, is the fruit of the rose plant, that typically is red-to-orange, but ranges from dark purple to black in some species. Rose hips begin to form in spring, and ripen in late summer through autumn.

Rose hips are used for herbal tea, jam, jelly, syrup, soup, beverages, pies, bread, wine, and marmalade. They can also be eaten raw, like a berry, if care is used to avoid the hairs inside the fruit.

A few rose species are sometimes grown for the ornamental value of their hips, such as Rosa moyesii, which has prominent large red bottle-shaped fruits.

Rose hips have recently become popular as a healthy treat for pet chinchillas and guinea pigs. These small rodents are unable to manufacture their own vitamin C and are unable to digest many vitamin-C rich foods. Rose hips provide a sugarless, safe way to increase their vitamin C intake.

Rose hips are also fed to horses. The dried and powdered form can be fed at a maximum of 1 tablespoon per day to improve coat condition and new hoof growth.

The fine hairs found inside rose hips are used as itching powder.Dried rosehips are also sold for primitive crafts and home fragrance purposes.

Rose hips were used in many food preparations by the indigenous peoples of the Americas.[citation needed]

Rose hips can be used to make Palinka, a traditional Hungarian alcoholic beverage. They are also the central ingredient of Cockta, the fruity-tasting national soft drink of Slovenia.

In his book Stalking the Faraway Places, wild foods enthusiast Euell Gibbons recommended stuffed rose hips made by slicing a large hip in half, removing the seeds and inserting a wild raspberry.

Rose hips are commonly used as an herbal tea, often blended with hibiscus and as an oil. They can also be used to make jam, jelly, marmalade and rose hip wine. Rose hip soup, "nyponsoppa," is especially popular in Sweden. Rhodomel, a type of mead, is made with rose hips.

[edit]Medical uses

Rose hips are particularly high in vitamin C content, one of the richest plant sources available. However, RP-HPLC assays of fresh rose hips and several commercially available products revealed a wide range of L-ascorbic acid content, ranging from 0.03 to 1.3%.[2] Rose hips of some species, especially Rosa canina (Dog Rose) and R. majalis, have been used as a source of vitamin C. During World War II, the people of Britain were encouraged through letters to The Times newspaper, articles in the British Medical Journal, and pamphlets produced by Claire Loewenfeld, a dietitian working for Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, to gather wild-grown rose hips and to make a vitamin C syrup for children. This was because German submarines were sinking many commercial ships: citrus fruits from the tropics were very difficult to import.

Rose hips contain plenty of lycopene, an important and strong antioxidant, that is an integral part of low density lipoprotein (LDL) as well as of many cellular membranes. Lycopene in rosehips differs greatly in its isomer distribution than in other sources (tomatoes, pink grapefruit).

Rose hips also contain some vitamin A and B, essential fatty acids and antioxidant flavonoids.

A study of a rose-hip preparation for treating rheumatoid arthritis concluded that there was a benefit, apparently due to both anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects.

The Quattro II triple quadropole mass spectrometer in our lab in Whitmore Lab. Don't know why I'm posting this, but this is where I work.

Hey Paul

Food Technology Department Factory and lab Equipment

Recently I've taken to pointing my binoculars more towards the ground, scanning for interesting lichens and attempting to identify them and learn a bit about them. The cup-like structures here are the vegetative podetia of a species of Cladonia. They are covered with flaky propagules (there are various types, soredia, isidia, squamules, etc....not sure which these are). These bits can fall off (as some have here), and since they contain both the fungal and algal symbiotic partners, they can grow into new lichens vegetatively. They can be dispersed by various agents including wind, rain, adherence to birds and mammals, and by snails, mites, etc. that have fed on them and then 'made a deposit' at a distance.

At some point the fungal partner may also reproduce sexually, forming spores in apothecia (e.g., the bright red tips of British Soldier lichens). When the spores disperse, they germinate and may be able exist as independent mycelia for some period, but have to meet up with the appropriate algal partner in order to become lichenized.

I was hoping that 'picture-keying' would allow me to put a name on these, but life is not so simple. They resemble Cladonia grayi or maybe C. chlorophaea to my untrained eye, but there are many groups of lichens in which closely-related species can only be reliably identified by biochemical characteristics using thin layer chromatography, HPLC, etc.. Any suggestions as to identity or corrections to the information above are welcome. Podetia height ca. 10-15mm.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) represent a large subset of contaminants of emerging concern labeled as endocrine disruptors. The endocrine system is a balanced network of glands and hormones that regulates developmental activities such as growth, behavior, metabolism, intelligence, sexual development, and the ability to reproduce as well as many other functions. To date, many studies have characterized the PPCP contamination in rivers and lakes across the country, and as the effects of these contaminates are unfolding, researchers are looking beyond water ways for these chemicals.

TestAmerica continues to partner with public and private researchers looking for PPCPs as they pass from non-point sources into sensitive ecosystems. Our method development has expanded our PPCP testing capabilities into sediment and tissue samples to find these contaminants where endocrine disruption is occurring. Making the leap from testing water to more complex matrices requires solutions for increased matrix related interferences and extraction enhancements that effectively remove the target compounds from the sample. Our success with complex matrices is helping answer difficult questions where PPCP contamination may be lurking.

Metosartan is the drug normally used as antihypertensive agent that act on heart and reduces hypertension in humans. It’s components telmisartan is a angiotensin type I receptor blocker known to induce apoptosis in urinary bladder and metoprolyl is the beta receptor blocker. RNase A is the most experimental protein in the 20th century. Disulphide bonds are necessary for enzymatic action of many proteins and it is also required for this protein. RNaseA kinetic studies is performed with the drug metosartan using RNA as the substrate Metosartan is an combination of metoprolol and telmisartan and found to contain inhibitory property on RNaseA. Protein degradation and thiol titration assay has found to be that the drug has reducing property on RNaseA. The study concludes that metosartin inhibits the activity of RNAse A allosterically by reducing the disulphide bonds present on it. The reduction of disulphides may dissociate the enzyme to its monomer which is not highly active hence reducing the catalytic activity of RNase A. HPLC studies confirm the RNaseA presence in testes and drug also induce toroid packing of DNA in immature sperms.

Christmas gifts 2013. The socks (from the PILs) are wonderful -- the fluffy softness is on the inside, next to my popsicle toes! The pepper extract (from the spousal unit) is seriously hot! No, seriously, I do mean SERIOUSLY HOT! I am a life-long fan of spicy-hot foods, but this salsa is so hot that it totally kicked my ass! It was so hot that I could have drunk a pint of really crappy german pilsner (if I had allowed such an awful thing into my place to begin with.) That said, this salsa has a nice after-burn, if you don't overdo it when you first taste it.

The inlet valve on the HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) machine in the food lab at UC Davis. The inlet valve is a rather clever invention. As the name might suggest, HPLC machines have solvent running through a chromatography colum at High Pressure -- around 40 MPa (~400 x atmospheric pressure). The challenge of introducing a sample into a high-pressure solvent stream is overcome by having dual inputs and outputs and a solvent loop. One input/output is a bypass, the other runs through the solvent loop. To load the sample, the valve is so that the sample is injected into the sample loop and the solvent bypasses the loop. When the valve is turned, solvent flows through the second set of inlets/outlets as well as through the sample loop, thus introducing the sample into the solvent stream.
