Full moon rises bright,
pine trees embrace the night light,
wolves howl at the moon...

A loaded Thunderbird crude ore train rounds the curve at Wolf en-route to the Fairlane processing plant. The Minntac Sub is on the left to, you guessed it, Minntac - visible on the divide in the distance.
Two days after about a foot of snow fell, a howling wind storm blew through mountains. This was taken on my way back from a what should have been a quick trip to the store. My wife can never figure out why it takes me so long to go just 3 miles.
This coyote was found near Specimen Ridge, on a bitter cold -12F degree below zero day. His pack-mates are just below the ridge, between him and the hills in the distance. The howling session lasted for over twenty minutes.
Communication by howling or vocalization is common among all members of the Canidae family. Studies of the various North American wild canids have identified a large variety in the types and variations of vocalizations used by these species for communication. Most of the research conducted on canid vocalizations has focused on Canis lupus (wolves); there are very few studies that have explored the potential information content found within coyote vocalizations.

During my trip to Mexico, I was able to visit the African Safari. Where they had these beautiful Mexican Grey Wolves.
Solo singer, a gray wolf at Alpha Park located in the heart of the Mercantour National Park, Saint-Martin-Vésubie, France.
Wolves howl to assemble the pack (usually before and after hunts), to pass on an alarm (particularly at a den site), to locate each other during a storm or unfamiliar territory and to communicate across great distances.
When howling together, wolves harmonize rather than chorus on the same note, thus creating the illusion of there being more wolves than there actually are.
Since 1992, the wolves that had been exterminated in France over a hundred years ago are living here again. They kept migrating across the Italian ‘green border’. Today, there are 25 to 30 wolves divided into packs of five to six, roaming through the seven valleys of the park again.
The Mercantour National Park is a unique nature reserve located in the very southeast corner of France.

Got up early and was hoping for a long overdue wolf shot.No wolves made their appearance but got compensated with this howling bald eagle.
Two Gray Wolves (Canis lupus) howl in unison as they answer a call from a packmate calling from another location. The blond wolf in front appears to be in heat. Image taken from the road from Mammoth Hot Springs to the Gardner River Bridge in Yellowstone National Park of Wyoming.
After posting my videos of Joe howling, I planned on getting some great videos of the wolves howling...here I had my phone set to photo instead of video. There was WAY too much going on and the entire time all the wolves were howling together, I was in the middle of them lost in the moment :-) photos and videos were the last thing on my mind. It was intense!
