A souvenir cobblestone from Ruedersheim's famous Drosselgasse. Whenever sections of the street are renewed, they keep the old stones for presentation purposes.
Whilst a UK arms control inspector, following the signing of the Dayton Agreement on Confidence & Security Building Measures in the Former Yugoslavia, and after having conducted several arms control inspections in Bosnia-Herzegovina, I was sent to Germany as one of the instructors on an arms control course for members of the former warring factions.
Our German hosts organised a boat trip down the Rhein, with a stop at Ruedersheim. They had arranged a wine tasting at the Rathaus (Town Hall), and a speech by the mayor. On leaving the mayor invited us to pick up a "famous Drosselgasse cobblestone" from a mountain of them stacked by the exit, along with a certificate of authenticity; the former warring faction students were not impressed, one Serb muttering to me "they throw these at the police in Belgrade!"
I picked up two as my teenage daughter, at the time, collected stones and rocks I brought back from arms control inspections.
On checking in at Frankfurt-Main for the flight home, I dumped my daysack on the counter with a big thump. "What do you have in there?" the check in girl demanded; "Pflastersteine" (cobblestones) I replied. "Was, Pflastersteine!" she said incredulously. After I produced them for her, she waved me through with a look that said "crazy English!"
The BCCK successfully hosted its first instalment of the Forum series on the topic of Agile HR. HR experts from various industries such as Linkedin, Google and PwC shared their expertise and perspectives on how different elements of Agile HR could be implemented in a Korean environment. Between the sessions, nearly 100 HR professionals from Korean and multinational companies engaged each other by sharing their experiences and creating valuable networking opportunities. The BCCK plans to organise similar forums on a regular basis going forward on themes that are relevant to our member companies and more broadly to the Korean market.
