EAST MIDTOWN PARTNERSHIP HOSTS TRICK-OR-TREAT WITH EAST MIDTOWN

VA Hosts Veteran Hiring Fair at the National Veteran Small Business Conference and Expo in Detroit.

The Department of Veterans Affairs Veteran Employment Services Office (VESO) will host its largest hiring fair to date at Detroit's Cobo Center, June 26-28. VA is hosting three major events at Detroit’s Cobo Center June 26-29: The VA for Vets Hiring Fair, the Veteran open house, and the National Veterans Small Business Conference and Expo. The events are expected to attract thousands of Veterans, business owners and federal employees, with an economic impact estimated at $11 million for the city. More than 24,000 federal and private-sector job openings across the country will be available at the free Veteran Hiring Fair June 26-28. VA will bring together partners like the First Lady’s “Joining Forces” initiative and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, along with private sector companies, during the fair. Not only will the fair provide Veterans an opportunity to showcase their skills to potential employers, it will also assist Veterans with resume preparation, interview techniques and career coaching. The open house gives Veterans and their families the chance to find out about the wide range of financial and health care benefits, services and resources that are available from federal, state and community agencies. The National Veterans Small Business Conference and Expo is the premier government event for Veteran-owned businesses. Last year’s conference in New Orleans drew almost 5,000 attendees, and more than 6,000 participants are expected this year. VA will provide Veteran-owned and Service-Disabled Veteran-owned businesses with a wide range of information to help them maximize opportunities in the federal workplace. Yay me.

Kenn made us some fancy looking breakfast. I didn't finish the seaweed (too early in the morning) bu it did look nice.

Kirkby Gallery us hosting an exhibition of book art related to Mary Shelley’s legendary novel Frankenstein until 26 January 2019.

‘Book Art’ involves using books as the basis for a piece of art – it could be a sculpture made out of a book, or a piece of art inspired by the structural or conceptual properties of books. All the exhibits in the show are a different take on the same theme, but there are some very different interpretations!

The book art on display in Kirkby has been created by local, national and international artists to celebrate 200 years since the release of Frankenstein, the classic gothic text that was arguably the earliest work of science fiction.

Artists involved in the exhibition have been inspired by the way the story is told in their art and others have made links with other classic gothic stories such as Dracula and The Golem. Some of the important themes seen in the book including ambition, free will, morality, ethics and empathy can also been seen in the art.

Today, NMCCL hosted a special ceremony in honor of the nearly 3,000 lives lost, the families of the victims, and the thousands of Americans who came together and assisted in recovery efforts after the terrorists attacks on September 11, 2001. Several staff members spoke of their personal experiences in NYC the day of the attacks, while some of our junior Sailors shared how they commemorate the anniversary every year.

"Today, we remember the loss of so many lives on that most horrible day in our history…On 9/11 every year, we are mindful and resolute that their deaths,

like their lives, shall have profound meaning. And in that meaning we shall carry forward our responsibility to protect America, the land we love.”
