The church hosts also a marking in the form of a meridian line inlaid in the paving of the left aisle in 1655; it was calculated and designed by the astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini, who was teaching astronomy at the University. A meridian line does not indicate the time: instead, with its length of 66.8 metres (219 ft) it is one of the largest astronomical instruments in the world, allowing measurements that were for the time uniquely precise. The sun light, entering through a 27.07 mm (1.066 in) hole placed at a 27.07 m (88.8 ft) height in the church wall, projects an elliptical image of the sun, which at local noon falls exactly on the meridian line and every day is different as to position and size. The position of the projected image along the line allows to determine accurately the daily altitude of the sun at noon, from which Cassini was able to calculate with unprecedented precision astronomical parameters such as the obliquity of the ecliptic, the duration of the tropical year and the timing of equinoxes and solstices. On the other hand, the size of the projected sun's image, and in particular its rate of variation during the year, allowed Cassini the first experimental verification of Kepler's laws of planetary motion.

Cassini and Domenico Guglielmini published an illustrated account of how the meridian line was accomplished in 1695.

Spent more time on this shot than many, trying to decide what to do with it.....sitting on my desktop, looking, experimenting....and then just letting go of the whole process and hoping I could post how I saw the moon on that particular night.....with the softly colored aura around it, the beauty of it....

Picnik a great help here with its easily used tools....and some light texturing (Picnik) to soften some pixelation.

******

Any ideas you might have on moon shots, I'd like to hear.....I think my telephoto not good enough....and as well (gasp)...it could be me, the photographer!

Canon XSi, Canon 55-250mm lens, ISO 1600, WB set at sunlight (awhile ago a pro had told me to do that), monopod.....forgot to set 2 sec. timer, might have helped.

So glad you stopped by and hoping your week is going well for you....

Clickin Moms hosts monthly Creativity Challenges which is a wonderful way to stretch yourself artistically. April's challenge is called “High ISO Color” and involved shooting at high ISO and leaving the image in color. From Sarah Wilkerson, host of the challenge:

"This month, we’re going to shoot images at ISO 3200 or higher. If your camera doesn’t go up to ISO 3200, then shoot at the highest ISO available. If your camera happens to handle high ISO remarkably well (I’m talking to you, fellow D4 owners), embrace the spirit of the exercise and push yourself outside of the comfort zone with ISO 6400, 12800, and beyond. And remember - high ISO doesn’t have to be confined to low light work; set a high ISO in standard lighting, then incorporate extreme depth of field or a very high shutter speed. You might find that it opens up some new creative opportunities!

Seems like a pretty simple challenge, right? I know what you’re thinking - and you’re planning to convert to black and white, aren’t you? Monochrome is a popular choice for high ISO processing, partly because the inherent artsiness of black and white seems more forgiving, and partly because black and white conversion tends to unify and minimize noise. For the purposes of this month’s exercise, however, not only are you to shoot at high ISO settings, but you are prohibited from converting your images to monochrome. "

This image was shot after sunset just as dusk was taking over. I did not adjust exposure and did minimal processing. It was shot at ISO 6400.

A butterfly gardeners delight. this variety of the passion vine is a host plant for the gulf fritillary butterfly, zebra longwing, variegated fritillary and the julia. The flowers are lightly fragrant and provide a nice purple pop of color in the garden. The zebras gulfs are starting to show up daily. I'm looking for the Julia, hope they show up soon.

Welcome to the Hosts of Chasers Pub-- The Pub where everyone knows yer name.

WSOR hosted a steam special from Janesville, WI to Chicago, IL. This is taken at MP 80.25 on WSOR's Fox Lake sub. The engine is a class act!! Hats off to all the volunteers associated with this!! This engine was built in March 1913 by ALCo, which makes it 104 years old.

Vart är vi på väg - tillsammans?

Come hang out at I Pink I Can and help us make a difference!

We stopped for elevenses in a little pub, blessedly almost empty.

Aren't they adorable?!

Too cold today to be outside long but I stopped to get a shot of this beautiful display of daffodils. Pure sunshine on a gray day!!
