I initially thought this was a female House Finch, but a closer look shows yellow feathers which is an uncommon color variant for males in our area. Perched on a spent stalk of liatris from my pollinator garden.

Close to home.
Foggy October day. In normal conditions there is a perfectly formed coppice or clump of trees visible in the middle of this field. Today there’s just a hint of darker shading in the fog.
Surrounded by trees that were mere small saplings when it was built, only the hint of a walkway to the barn remains to give evidence of its former vitality. Looking into the face of an older person can sometimes give a minuscule glimpse of the important role they once played in their family, community and sometimes,
far beyond.
