In Eicherscheid, in der Nordeifel, findet man viele der Schutzhecken. Diese hier ist bis 8 m hoch.
Sie wurden angelegt, um die Häuser vor den kühlen Westwinden zu schützen, die vor allem von Herbst bis Frühling ungebremst vom Hohen Venn herüberwehen.
Selbst heute mit Doppelverglasung und Isolierung, erfüllen sie noch ihren Zweck.
Caught in the morning sunlight, this very young Eastern Bluebird sits atop a mullein plant in the countryside. He is in the beginning stages of developing the familiar deep royal blue on the back and head that adult males have.
This particular adolescent is probably from the first hatching as bluebirds often have more than one brood each year. The first ones produced often separate from their parents later in the summer while the subsequent youngsters normally stay with their parents over the winter.
One interesting facet is that bluebirds that inhabit areas further north tend to lay more eggs than those out east or down south. The nuances in habits of bird life are fascinating and are often dictated by geography or diet.

Another 33A, another winning leader!
As has been the norm lately, 33A flies through downtown Harrisburg with an excellent leader, this time in the form of an ex-Conrail SD70.
The Spartan cab beauty is even showing a sliver of it's original Conrail blue paint around the window.

EC 176 Praha hl.n. - Hamburg-Altona
Am 12. Januar 2025, nach der ersten Frühschicht der Woche, lachte die Sonne vom wolkenlosen Himmel als ich die Firma verließ und mich auf dem Weg nach Müssen machte. Nach etwa 30min bin ich dann in den Feldweg zur Fotostelle eingebogen. Am Ende des Plattenweges habe ich mein Auto an den Rand gestellt und bin noch weitere 10min mit der Fotoausrüstung und meinem Klapptritt den matschigen, teilweise gefrorenen bzw. leicht angetauten Weg zum gewünschten Mastabstand in der bekannten Fotokurve gelaufen. Die kurze Fototour mal eben nach der Schicht war auf maximal 2std angesetzt. Länger war die Sonne sowieso nicht mehr am Himmel. In der Sonne war es auch bei leichtem Wind ganz passabel auszuhalten. Ich hatte nämlich nicht wirklich die richtigen Klamotten dabei um stundenlang in der Kälte zu verharren. Es hatte sich aber eine Lokomotive angekündigt, die ich gerne in die Sammlung aufnehmen wollte, bevor die Jahreszeit und somit wahrscheinlich die Beklebung selbiger Geschichte sein könnte. Die 193 022 der Ceske Drahy mit der Weihnachtsbeklebung. Diese sollte lt. Sledovani an diesem Tag mit einem Eurocity von Prag nach Hamburg unterwegs sein. Ich baute also gemütlichen meinen Tritt auf und stellte schonmal die Kamera ein. Bis ich diese Ankündigung überprüfen konnte, sollten dann noch ein RE mit DB 146.2 und ein ICE an mir vorbei durch die langgezogene Kurve rollen. Kurz vor 15 Uhr sollte es dann soweit sein. Der EC 176 hat in Büchen, dem letzten Bahnhof vor meinem Standpunkt, eine planmäßige Abfahrtszeit um 14:50 Uhr und sollte somit etwa 3-5min später bei mir auftauchen. Zur Abfahrtzeit leuchte das Signal in meinem Rücken schon gute 10min grün. Das in die Gegenrichtung auch schon mindestens 5min. Ich habe schon den von hinten angedrohten METRANS-Zug durchs Motiv fahren sehen während von vorne zum gleichen Zeitpunkt der anvisierte Fernzug erscheinen könnte. Es ging aber alles gut und von hinten rauschte nur ein ICE-T durch die Kurve. Etwa 2min später hatte ich dann das obige Foto im Kasten. Ich habe mich gefreut, dass die Ankündigung richtig war und ich einen weiteren der neuen CD-Vectron in die Sammlung aufnehmen konnte. Ich bin dann noch bis "Licht aus" vor Ort geblieben. Ich sollte mich an diesem Sonntag noch über ein nettes Bonusbild freuen, welches etwa 20min im Anschluss entstanden ist. Dazu mehr dann in einigen Tagen in meinem Fotostream...
As we approached the outer limits of the Chicago Terminal, near Gary, trains were beginning to pile up. This is actually quite normal, but there was chatter on the radio hinting to a train ahead experiencing trouble.
The railroads changed to narrow band radio communication a few years back. This system makes it extremely difficult to hear a locomotive radio from more than ten miles away. If a portable radio is being used, then the limit seems to be around three miles.
While the dispatcher flushed out the normal rush of evening eastbound intermodals, those of us on westbounds suffered a very slow roll into town. Every mile of progress, though, made it a tad easier to catch bits and pieces of the conversation ahead.
Just prior to leaving the mainline and changing over to the yard radio channel, I learned that the train in question was Amtrak's Capitol Limited. It was stopped east of the detector a mile or so south of the White Sox stadium.
On the following day, we departed Englewood and began our journey to Toledo. The progression of signals ahead meant a stop at the Calumet River bridge for a lake freighter to pass through.
Once stopped at the signal, I opened the door and was surprised to find sparkling Charger 361 tied down on a yard lead. With no apparent fuel, oil, or water leaks, I assumed she had an issue somewhere within.
After kicking over a few stones, I learned that the Capitol tripped the detector at MP518 for a wheel defect. The culprit? Non other than the brand new 361! So new that the wheel sets were still shiny. Not a speck of dirt or dust to be found.
The crew was instructed to limp the unit down to CP 509 where it could be set out. The defect was rumored to be an issue with one of the axles.
Lucky for the passengers on #30, the 361 was not sole power for the train. She was trailing a Genesis unit. After a hefty delay, the train continued east.
This is not the first time that I had seen or heard of a Charger no longer being able to charge ahead. It sounds like the model's reliability percentage is more favorable now than when first delivered. Good news as Amtrak has enough troubles!
