Feast of the Black Nazarene
Quiapo, Manila, Philippines
January 9, 2011
After several days coordinating with Jovi Ong about shooting the Black Nazarene feast, I was able to join him together with Charles Loo, Jovi's shooting buddy and our host for that day.
I sure had to drag myself out of bed that Sunday morning as the weather was still inviting to stay in bed and the drizzling rain wasn't helping either. Thank God the rain stopped and there was a bit of sunshine already. Soon, I found myself up and ready with my gears and was heading to Quiapo via MRT-LRT. It was at the LRT-EDSA station that I noticed the devotees of the Black Nazarene, mostly with their maroon shirts with a Black Nazarene design printed on it. They too were heading to Manila to take part in the religious festivity.
When I arrived at the LRT-Carriedo station, I immediately headed towards Palanca St. to meet up with Jovi and Charles. When I got down the station, I was greeted with hundreds of devotees walking, waiting and some processioning their own replica of the "Poon", as others call the Black Nazarene. The devotees walked barefoot as they imitate how Jesus went to Mount Calvary.
Despite the volume of people there, I was still able to move easily since the street wasn't that too congested yet and I managed to find my way easily to the barangay hall to which Jovi and Charles were waiting. Since we heard that the Black Nazarene is scheduled to pass in the area around 2pm, we decided to go around Quiapo, take some snaps and have an early lunch. We were already back before 1pm. It started to drizzle by 2:00pm and that time, street vendors were already moving out of the way and the road was getting filled up fast by hundreds or most likely thousands of devotees waiting for the arrival of the Black Nazarene.
Alas! An hour after, the carriage of the Black was already insight and the scenes that transpired in the next hour can't be captured by photos and videos alone. I felt the temperature rose as people flocked the carriage, some climbed and touched the figure while others tried to get hold of the ropes that pulled it. They didn't mind how crowded the area was nor the drizzling rain.
It was totally a different experience for me to have witnessed up close this unique festivity. Thanks to Charles for being such a great host and also to Jovi for inviting me 'til the day of the festivity.

She & Him feature the somewhat unlikely pairing of country-folk artist M. Ward and actress/singer/songwriter Zooey Deschanel. While starring in the 2007 film The Go-Getter, Deschanel was asked by director Martin Hynes to perform a duet with Ward, who had agreed to helm the movie's soundtrack. The two recorded a cover of Richard & Linda Thompson's "When I Get to the Border" and later reconvened in Portland, where they began recording Deschanel's original songs (which the actress had previously demoed for years, but kept secret) in Ward's studio. Drawing upon analog production techniques and a shared love of vintage pop bands, the duo emerged with Volume One, a collection of songs that introduced Deschanel as a singer/songwriter in her own right.

"I exist in the relations. Others create me and I am a reflection of others. I wanna be part of you - your body, your moment, your story, and your life. Once I met him. This encounter is still a memorable moment of something that moves me forward, let me dance and spin around. His body stucked to mine and we were breathing together. I have been embraced from inside, I became part of him. We were together, once and for ever."

I didn't bother going down to watch this band, as I'm not really a fan. Apparently, neither was about 60% of the audience, as they all left. I walked past the singer as he was on the way up the stairs to the dressing rooms and he had a face like thunder. Maybe if he tried to deliver a good performance, rather than just expecting to be worshipped, he might get a bigger audience next time.

ROA
His artwork has taken him across the world, and his massive and haunting murals featuring native fauna have made him one of this decade’s leading street artists.
ROA is an artist but at heart he’s also a zoologist and an explorer. His passion is derived from the study and the understanding of the animals he encounters.
ROA may be seen as the poetic conclusion to the nineteenth century explosion of scientific discovery – a time when Linnaeus, Darwin, et al entertained intellectual Europe with zoological discoveries, pristine environments and unimagined animals.
However, in the twenty first century, the message is a somber one. ROA’s work documents the tenuous cohabitation of animal and man within the new environment left in the the wake of discovery.
With subtle naivety, elegance and a style reminiscent of early natural history illustrations,ROA superimposes massive depictions of indigenous animals on walls, each one being a story of death and survival. Creatures perhaps acting as martyrs for the worlds which lay long forgotten at the foundations of our cities.
This friction between man, animal, civilisation and nature is the focal point for ROA’s latest exhibition at Backwoods Gallery titled; “Carrion”.

Found, together with parts of himation, arms and legs of the same bronze statue, and also together with many other sculptures of different eras, during 1901-1902, in an ancient shipwreck on the sea floor off Antikythera, south of Peloponnese. On the head are recognized individual features. The statue depicted a Cynic philosopher, probably Bion the Borysthenite. The hair and the beard are worked in unkempt, tousled locks. The inlaid white irises of his eyes lend an expressive vitality. The philosopher was depicted standing (ca. 240 BC), wearing a long himation. He held a staff in his left hand and his right arm bent at the elbow was extended in a gesture characteristic of people delivering a speech. On the feet he wore thick-soled sandals with crossed thongs.
Height 0,29 m.
I could say a lot about this photo, but I think it stands out in the series and speaks for itself - black and white, film, not a self-portrait.

THE TRAVELLER
There was once a traveler who was visiting a foreign land
He searched high and low, and finally he came to one of the deepest, darkest parts of the forest
But even in the darkest depths of the forest there was still light
After much pondering he finally came to understand what this all meant
There could be hope for all of these people without it, he just had to bring the light to them!
Well, fate it must be. It was kind of funny that a week or less ago when seeing a photo of a dog on facebook that some one had rescued and was trying to find a forever home for..but it was a big dog...i said to myself, well if it was a little dog i would be happy to rescue a dog....Yesterday, while stopping at a gas station down town to get the boys a snack, a girl was walking through with a dog in her arms talking to people in their cars..she walked by me..hesitated and came up to my window..little doggie immediatley climbed through the window on to my lap...she proceeded to tell some crazy story..first she found the dog, then wanted $50 because her sister didn't have food, but then when i told her i would take him and give him a home or find his home..she then said it was her cousins...any how...short version..he came home with us..in the car he got named "Buddy" it just fit...Skinny, and malnourished..but happy and sweet and loving and gets along great with the other two...he did fine! I took him to the vet this morning for a check up and to make sure he wasn't some one's lost dog(negative on the chip) Got all of his blood work done, vaccination and heartworm check..he is now our forever dog!
The boys are thrilled..and they say now each of them has their own dog..haha!

I know that there is no stormie in this one, but it still relates to them pretty directly. I had to do something after Mauls efforts at discipline last night and I figured that roughing him up a bit in front of the troops would be a good idea.

I asked him if I could take his picture, not really expecting much of an answer. But he said yes and even gave me his email address when I offered to send him the photo. I applied a texture to emphasize the traditional aspect, but to be safe I'll probably just send him the plain version. Stupidly I still had the camera set to ISO-1600 because I had just come out of St. Peter's Basilica.
