The highest mountain in the Czech Republic, a distinctive trihedral pyramid, is elevated 1,603 metres above sea level.
The north slopes fall on the Polish side in the valley of the Lomnička, while on the southern side in the Obří Důl. The name is derived from the adjective Sněžná i.e. covered with snow. It is believed that Mount Sněžka was climbed for the first time by an unknown Venetian in 1456.
The oldest building on Sněžka is the chapel of Saint Lawrence built between 1655 and 1681.
From 1949 to 2012 a chairlift from Pec pod Sněžkou went to Sněžka.
The highest post office in Bohemia is located on the peak of Sněžka. The new post office was opened in August 2008. In addition to sending correspondence, hikers can also buy a hiking stamp, find refreshments and, in the case of inclement weather, hide from the wind and rain. The viewing terrace offers a breath-taking view of Poland and the Czech Republic.

Severní srázy spadají na polské straně do údolí Lomničky, na jižní do Obřího dolu. Pojmenování vzniklo od přídavného jména Sněžná (sněhem pokrytá). Poprvé prý na Sněžku vystoupil neznámý Benátčan v roce 1456.
Nejstarší stavbou na Sněžce je kaple sv. Vavřince postavená v letech 1655–1681.
Od roku 1949 do roku 2012 na Sněžku jezdila sedačková lanovka z Pece pod Sněžkou.
Na vrcholu Sněžky byla umístěna nejvýše položená pošta v Čechách. Nová poštovna byla otevřena v srpnu 2008. Turisté zde mohou nejenom podat listovní zásilku, ale i koupit turistickou známku, najdou zde malé občerstvení a v případě nevlídného počasí se zde mohou schovat před větrem a deštěm. Vyhlídková terasa nabízí úchvatný rozhled do Polska a České republiky.

Japan records highest COVID-19 cases for fourth day running
A senior official in Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga’s government said on Sunday the Asian country’s daily tally of confirmed COVID-19 cases has hit a record for the fourth day running, while the government is considering re-imposing limits on sports and other large events to curb the surge.
The Japanese Health Ministry reported 2,508 cases on Sunday, the second time the daily tally topped 2,500, according to Al Jazeera.
The report indicates that in the Japanese capital, Tokyo, the daily infection rate was an all-time high of 539 cases.
Japan has had fewer than 2,000 COVID-19-related deaths so far, avoiding the toll of harder-hit nations but fears are growing of another surge and local media said hospital capacity is being tested in the hardest-hit areas as a growing number of severely ill patients occupy a dwindling number of available beds.
Yasutoshi Nishimura, the Economy Minister, told public broadcaster NHK, that the government was mulling re-imposing attendance limits on large gatherings in areas of the country seeing a sharp increase in cases.

Amtrak loco 122 at the head of our westbound "California Zephyr" at Fraser Winter Park, CO in the Rocky Mountain National Park - the highest Amtrak station in the United States at 2613m / 8574ft above sea level. The Zephyr started its journey at 2pm the day before in Chicago and arrived in Denver at 11.35am (4.5 hours late due to flooding in Nebraska). We will leave the train at Grand Junction in five and a half hours time. The Zephyr will continue to Emeryville CA (for San Francisco) arriving at 4.10pm the next day (or sometime after that).
