I know these guys are around because I see tracks all the time and occasionally catch one going through the yard at night on the trail cam. Every year around this time, they seem to make an appearance late in the day. I got home from work one day last week and was getting ready to have dinner when I spotted this guy in the neighbor's yard across the street. I watched him (or her) cross the road and head around the neighbor's house right next door, so I grabbed my camera, went outside on the front porch and waited for it to come around the side of the house. It did, and for just a fleeting second or two, we locked eyes before it bolted off in the other direction. This image doesn't really provide any scale, but this guy is pretty big and apparently well fed.

Since I pre-ordered this unit through ScaleTrains, I figured I'd never see it or if I did it would be torched like most of the other GE toasters. Glad I caught it while it still looks pretty decent.

In fact this was supposed to be the beginning of a series, but a sudden storm came over. The rain hammered down and kept on for the rest of the afternoon so I didnt get the opportunity to take any more photos. Next time though, so watch this space.
Here's one more of our little Pied-billed Grebes most likely in a courtship or mating behavior. This frame I thought is particularly sweet the way they're pushing water as they go about their frolic. Happy Valentine's Day.

An extremely dry summer forced the heather to flower some weeks earlier compared to 'normal' years. With some patches seriously suffering, turning brown and notably less insects buzzing around than I was used to, some strolls across these iconic Dutch lands have left me feeling rather down about the future of these precious ecosystems. Let this be a reminder to not look away from the work that needs to be put in by ALL of us and remain hopeful about the changes we CAN make. And an important note (at least to myself) to also let nature be our guide and inspiration in our daily actions to help it preserve its vigour and beauty.
Here’s my first shot from a short Iron Range trip this Summer. Seeing standard cab dash eights lead road trains was a great change of pace from monotonous gevos.
The morning started with getting up an hour prior to sunrise at the hotel in Proctor. While driving up to Iron Junction, I noticed the sun beginning to light up some clouds on the horizon. This scared me a little bit, but I remembered my railfan colleagues telling me to not expect completely sunny days up. Surely enough, every day was partly cloudy. ATCS showed a train lined of Minorca Junction, so I quickly made a game plan to catch it at first light. Thankfully, I caught a decent sucker hole and got full sun. Steamy taconite pellets were a nice plus.
I’m very glad I made a last second trip up there as the dash eights no longer roam the former DMIR.

Here's an image from about a month ago when the leaves just started to emerge in the higher elevations of the Hudson Highlands. Watching the valley fall into shadow as night sets in is always an enjoyable way to end the day.

The newest addtion to the family: Virginia Claire was born at 7:52 this morning. She weighs 7 pounds 3 ounces and is 18.5 inches long. Mom and baby are doing well.
As a side note, eldest daughter went in for a routine check at her OB today, and was admitted to the hospital. She's at 35 weeks, so we are all hoping for one more week with her twins on the inside.
This is SOOC, except for a crop......maybe tomorrow.....
