More than 500 students from around the world competed in NASA's Human Exploration Rover Challenge (HERC) Friday, April 21, and Saturday, April 22, at the Aviation Challenge camp of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, near NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

NASA hosted 48 teams from 16 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, as well as the countries of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic, India, Mexico, Peru, and Singapore.

Throughout the nine-month challenge, each team will attempt to design, build, and test human-powered rovers capable of traversing a challenging half-mile obstacle course that simulates the terrain of the Moon, Mars, or other rocky bodies in our solar system. In addition, students must also design and demonstrate a unique tool capable of completing various mission tasks.

HERC is one of NASA's nine Artemis Student Challenges - a variety of activities providing students access to the knowledge and technology required to achieve the goals of the Artemis Program.

Replays of the competition are available on NASA Marshall YouTube and NASA's HERC Facebook page.

Herc Armstrong's exploration suit is an electrically-powered, computer-assisted exoskeleton which has been tested to withstand a concussive force equal to 100 pounds of TNT. Fully insulated and pressure-regulated, it is able to maintain a steady internal environment and withstand external temperature variations from -150 to 5000 degrees Fahrenheit. Attached to the suit's right arm is a titanium steel hook which can be fired up to 1000 feet. The hook is permanently attached to the suit and can be retracted by a computer-operated winch. The suit is also equipped with lifts that can extend the height of the suit an additional 5 feet.

Exoplanets are cool 😎

Here’s Webb’s view of 14 Her c, which is a chilly 26 degrees F (-3 C) in temperature, and in fact one of the coldest exoplanets imaged to date. It’s hard to capture objects that are this faint - but Webb was up to the challenge.

Webb is also giving us insight into a planetary system that astronomers have deemed abnormal, chaotic, and strange. Planets b and c don’t orbit in the same plane the way our planets do. Their orbits are inclined relative to each other and the two planets cross each other like an X with their star at the center. This is also the first time an image has been snapped of an exoplanet in such a mis-aligned system.

Planet c’s orbit is also extremely elliptical, with it orbiting its star some 1.4 billion miles away (on average 15 times farther from the Sun than Earth) putting it somewhere between Saturn and Uranus if it were in our solar system.

Webb also gave scientists some clues about the planet’s atmosphere and chemistry. Its atmosphere is quickly churning up molecules of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, which are made in the planet’s warmer, lower atmosphere, to the cold, upper atmosphere. As a result, we’re seeing those molecules exist at temperatures where we would expect to see molecules of methane instead.

Image description: This image shows the exoplanet 14 Herculis c. The view is mostly black, with very faint red splotches in the central region of the image. At the center of the image, there is a black circle, and in the center of that, there is a star symbol representing a real star. This black circle blocks the light from the host star. To the lower right of the circle is a fuzzy bright orange circle, which is the exoplanet.

This is Herc and her husband of 12 years Jake. I met these two while enjoying a Crimson King amber ale at the Accomplice beer hall, in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Herc used to work at the capitol building as a tour guide. She was very knowledgeable about the history of Cheyenne. Jake is in the Air Force and works seven on seven off. I had such a great time with them and I learned so much. When I asked if it was ok to take their picture, Jake said I hope you don’t mind if I don’t smile. It looks like he slipped a bit.
