More than 500 students from around the world competed in NASA's Human Exploration Rover Challenge (HERC) Friday, April 21, and Saturday, April 22, at the Aviation Challenge camp of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, near NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

NASA hosted 48 teams from 16 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, as well as the countries of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic, India, Mexico, Peru, and Singapore.

Throughout the nine-month challenge, each team will attempt to design, build, and test human-powered rovers capable of traversing a challenging half-mile obstacle course that simulates the terrain of the Moon, Mars, or other rocky bodies in our solar system. In addition, students must also design and demonstrate a unique tool capable of completing various mission tasks.

HERC is one of NASA's nine Artemis Student Challenges - a variety of activities providing students access to the knowledge and technology required to achieve the goals of the Artemis Program.

Replays of the competition are available on NASA Marshall YouTube and NASA's HERC Facebook page.

No not the antipodean location but the small village by the same name located on the South East boundary of the old RAF Station at Lyneham in Wiltshire

Here, sometime in 1995, taking centre-stage of the RAF Lockheed Hercules fleet that were then based there is 'stretched' C.3 XV184

Like many RAF Stations, Lyneham closed several years ago and is now used by the Army

Destined to be the new location for a Tri-service Engineering Apprentice Training centre when those current establishments located at DCAE Cosford and HMS Sultan are re-located there

Hercules' adventures with Amadeus Cho and the Mighty Avengers were part of what got me into reading Marvel comics, years ago, sort of feeding off my love of classical mythology, and I have to say, despite the current series being an American Gods rip-off I'm actually really enjoying it. Yes, it is American Gods and it's not even subtle about it, but the real focus of the story is Herc, the first superhero, trying to stay relevant in the modern day, and his relationship with Gilgamesh (in whom he sees so many of his own flaws) is engaging.

A Cybrid Herc from the Earthsiege series (which spawned Starsiege: Tribes later). The design is a bit strange, but I wanted to accentuate some of the characteristics of the early Cybrids, and distance it a bit from the typical mechs.

Hercules Beetle (Scarabeus hercules = Dynastes hercules, plate 40b) from Le règne animal (The Animal Kingdom) by Georges Cuvier. I don't see the set of scarab beetle plates in the BHL Flickr set--I found this by paging through the reference on BHL itself. I cleaned up the background, cropped, and downsampled from the original to produce this one. Usually this species is shown in a lateral view--interesting to see a dorsal portrait.

Coulson Aviation's newest tanker, T134, takes off from Mesa Gateway. This particular airframe, 161496, is an ex-TACAMO EC-130Q.

This was its second flight after sitting in storage at the Boneyard for 25 years.

As of 1/23/2020, this airframe was lost in a crash while on a firefighting mission in Australia.
