We stopped at the gas station on the way to our Uhwarrie River trip and look who joined us. My little friend is the Hercules Beetle, Dynastes tityus who decided to visit the gas pump. I felt obligated to move him and get his picture while I was at it.

Departing the Bwlch and heads north.

Only managed to get a couple of hours at Mach Loop on Monday and only had two passes of this herc. Still the weather was good which is always a bonus.

she has to touch him in some way. he normally doesn't let her until he's too tired to bother moving. we were surprised he stayed in this position for any length of time. under normal circumstances, as soon as she touches him, he growls and she backs away...for a few moments...and then slinks in again. she's a persistent little wench.

we've had her just over a year now, and herc still makes it blatanly obvious he'd rather not have her around. he ignores as much as he can, tolerates her for the most part...but every once in a while--when he's bored or wound up--he'll act as if he likes her.

Several others were visible outside - all with their former serials, roundels and fin flashes painted out

Following the gradual introduction of the RAF Airbus Atlas fleet, others have already been sold on and there's no doubt that these last examples of the 'J' model we acquired are on the MoD 'For Sale' list too

A great servant to the RAF over the years, Hercules ZH874 is looking a bit tired on its low level sortie through LFA17. Callsign 'Ascot 125'.

From the cargo area of the C-130 Hercules looking out onto the C-17 Globemaster III. I figured this shot would be an appropriate way to end my uploading of photos from the Star Spangled Salute 2008.

To remember the 'Herc' which is being retired soon, a three ship flight toured many of the RAF bases. Living close to RAF Valley it was something to see. The flight crossing the coast onto the island with the Llyn Peninsular in the background.

To remember the 'Herc' which is being retired soon, a three ship flight toured many of the RAF bases. Living close to RAF Valley it was a nice day out. Passing at low level this taken from the sand dunes it was almost like an air to air shot, certainly it was something to see.
