The neoclassical, Helsinki Cathedral, towering over the neighbourhood of Kruununhaka in the center of Helsinki, Finland. The cathedral with its striking design is visible from most parts of the city. It was built between 1824 and 1826 and designed by Carl Ludvig Engel.

Independence Day sunset panorama photographed in southern Helsinki.

Helsinki Cathedral was originally built from 1830-1852 as a tribute to the Grand Duke of Finland, Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. It was also known as St Nicholas' Church until the independence of Finland in 1917. The façade is fronted by a statue of Emperor Alexander II of Russia.

A distinctive landmark in the Helsinki cityscape, with its tall, green dome surrounded by four smaller domes, the building is in the neoclassical style. It was designed by Carl Ludvig Engel as the climax of his Senate Square layout: it is surrounded by other, smaller buildings designed by him.

The building was later altered by Engel's successor Ernst Lohrmann, whose four small domes emphasise the architectural connection to the cathedral's model, Saint Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg. Today, the cathedral is one of Helsinki's most popular tourist attractions.

Helsinki gehört auf jeden Fall zu den Top 5 meiner Städte in Europa. Helsinki ist nicht so hektisch eher etwas gemütlich. Für mich ist es eine wunderbare Mischung aus Natur und Stadt. Die Luft ist klar und es ist nicht zu heiß.

Helsinki is definitely one of my top 5 cities in Europe. Helsinki is not so hectic, but rather a bit cosy. For me, it's a wonderful mix of nature and city. The air is clear and it's not too hot.
