The Princess Royal officially opens Wales First World War Centenary Wood, Coed Ffos Las
It’s been four years in the making, with many hundreds of local people including children helping to plant the trees, and Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal has now formally opened Coed Ffos Las, Wales’ First World War Centenary Wood, in the Gwendraeth Valley in Carmarthenshire. As the Woodland Trust’s (Coed Cadw’s) most recently planted wood in Wales, it's part of the The First World War Centenary Woods project which is helping to plant millions of native trees to commemorate the First World War.
The Princess Royal was joined by around 40 invited guests on 2 July, who saw demonstrations highlighting the hugely important role that woods and trees played in the First World War. There was horse ploughing, greenwood working and a working blacksmith. The 157 Royal Logistics Corp were also present, a company created as a result of the First World War, who have helped plant the trees at Coed Ffos Las and who are proud to have The Princess Royal as their Patron.
Her Royal Highness then formally unveiled a plaque displaying the name of the life-sized War Horse Sculpture which forms a special Commemorative Feature of the site. Created out of Corten steel by the designer Steve Tomlinson, the statue was named Yr Arwr / Hero, after the poem which won Hedd Wyn the Chair at the 1917 National Eisteddfod. The name was chosen by Jane Hutt, formerly Leader of the House at the National Assembly for Wales, from ideas suggested in a public competition for names organised last summer in which nearly one hundred people took part.
Natalie Buttriss, Director of Wales for the Woodland Trust (Coed Cadw) said: “I’m delighted to be able to welcome The Princess Royal to Coed Ffos Las. Working with the local community and with the support of our members and sponsors we have created a beautiful, poignant new woodland which incorporates 90,000 native trees. There is also an orchard, bee hives, a pond, an area of woodland which can be coppiced, open areas for enjoying the panoramic views, as well as the amazing war horse sculpture as a commemorative feature.
“Coed Ffos Las is a unique woodland in Wales which we are using to tell the story of wood, woodland, workers and soldiers in the First World War. A huge percentage of Wales’ ancient woodland was felled for a wide range of uses in the Great War. Ammunition cases, vehicle bodies, gun carriages, matches, pit props, even hazel hurdles were used to build the walls of trenches. Wales is, in many ways, still feeling the environmental impact of a war that wreaked havoc on soldiers’ and communities’ lives.”
“The creation of the Coed Ffos Las has cost around £1.2m in total. The Woodland Trust is hugely grateful to everyone who supported our fundraising appeal for the site, to our lead partner in the project, Sainsbury’s, to Welsh Government’s Plant! initiative and the players of the National Lottery, through the Heritage Lottery Fund, all of which have generously supported different aspects of the project.”
The First World War Centenary Woods project is supported by the Trust’s lead partner Sainsbury's, helping to plant millions of native trees to commemorate the First World War. Mike Coupe, the company’s CEO, said: “We’re pleased to support such a fitting memorial to those affected by the First World War. It’s important to our customers and colleagues, and commemorative to the colleagues who fell during World War One.

Yn awr mae ei Huchelder Brenhinol, y Dywysoges Frenhinol wedi agor Coed Ffos Las yn ffurfiol. Dyma Goedwig Canmlwyddiant y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf yng Nghymru, yng Nghwm Gwendraeth yn Sir Gaerfyrddin. Hon yw’r goedwig fwyaf newydd y mae Coed Cadw (Woodland Trust) wedi ei phlannu yng Nghymru mae’n rhan o brosiect Coed Canmlwyddiant y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf sydd â’i fryd ar blannu miliynnau o goed brodorol i goffau’r Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf.
Fe ymunodd oddeutu 40 o westeion â’r Dywysoges Frenhinol ar 2 Gorffennaf. Fe welson nhw arddangosfeydd oedd wedi cael eu trefnu i amlygu rôl hollbwysig coetir a choed yn y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf. Fe fu ceffylau gwedd yn aredig y tir, fe fu bobl yn gwneud gwaith coed gwyrdd ac fe fu gof yn gweithio. Roedd y 157 Royal Logistics Corp yn bresennol hefyd. Cwmni yw hwn a grëwyd o ganlyniad i'r Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf. Maen nhw wedi helpu plannu'r coed yng Nghoed Ffos Las ac maen nhw’n falch fod y Dywysoges Frenhinol noddwr iddyn nhw.
Wedyn, fe wnaeth ei Huchelder Frenhinol ddatgluddio plac sy’n dwyn enw'r cerflun ceffyl rhyfel, sy'n ffurfio nodwedd goffaol ar y safle. Wedi'i greu o ddur Corten gan y dylunydd Steve Tomlinson, fe gafodd y cerflun ei fedyddio Yr Arwr / Hero, ar ôl y gerdd a enillodd y Gadair i Hedd Wyn yn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol 1917. Dewiswyd yr enw gan Jane Hutt, a oedd gynt yn Arweinydd y Tŷ yng Nghynulliad Cenedlaethol Cymru, o syniadau a awgrymwyd mewn cystadleuaeth gyhoeddus a drefnwyd yr haf diwethaf, y cymerodd bron i gant o bobl ran ynddi hi.

Young people bring Christmas to the Senedd ahead of carol concert

Primary school pupils from across Wales will help decorate Christmas trees that will be displayed on the Assembly’s estate during the festive period.
Pupils from Ysgol Cystennin, Mochdre, Colwyn Bay will help staff at the Assembly’s Colwyn Bay office adorn their tree on 17 December between 13:15-15:00.
While Moorland Primary School from Splott in Cardiff will, along with the Presiding Officer, Rosemary Butler AM, decorate the Senedd’s Christmas tree on 4 December, with their own decorations created in school.
The decorating will take place prior to the Assembly’s carol concert and the school’s choir of about 30 children will also sing at the event.

Bydd disgyblion o ysgolion cynradd ledled Cymru yn helpu i addurno coed Nadolig a gaiff eu harddangos ar ystâd y Cynulliad dros gyfnod yr ŵyl.
Bydd disgyblion o Ysgol Cystennin, Mochdre, Bae Colwyn, yn helpu staff swyddfa’r Cynulliad ym Mae Colwyn i addurno eu coeden ar 17 Rhagfyr rhwng 13.15 a 15.00.
Bydd Ysgol Gynradd Moorland, y Sblot, ynghyd â Rosemary Butler AC, Llywydd y Cynulliad, yn addurno coeden Nadolig y Senedd ar 4 Rhagfyr, gan ddefnyddio addurniadau arbennig a grëwyd ganddynt yn yr ysgol.
Bydd y gwaith addurno yn digwydd cyn cyngerdd carolau’r Senedd, a bydd côr yr ysgol, sy’n cynnwys tua 30 o blant, hefyd yn canu yn y digwyddiad hwnnw.

Twenty-two-year-old Thomas Coleman from Oakdale, Blackwood was supported by his proud family, when he graduated with a BSc with Honours in Business Management at a Degree and Award Congregation for Swansea University’s School of Management held in the City and County of Swansea’s Brangwyn Hall. During his time at university Tom worked hard in a range of professional and volunteering roles, gaining a great deal of experience which will help prepare him for a future career in marketing.

On Wednesday 21 January the Health and Social Care Committee met with service users and service providers from across Wales as part of their inquiry into alcohol and substance misuse.
As part of the inquiry, the Committee wanted to know about the effect that alcohol and substance misuse has on the people of Wales, how well these issues re currently being tackles, and whether the right local services are in place across Wales to help people and make sure that they know about the possible harms.
Participants gave their views through a reference group which will help the Committee make sure that they can take into account how alcohol and substance misuse affects real people in Wales on a daily basis.
The Committee will now consider the outcomes of the discussion, alongside other evidence given in formal oral evidence sessions and written submissions. They will use this information to write a report about the issue which will include recommendations to the Welsh Government.

On Wednesday 21 January the Health and Social Care Committee met with service users and service providers from across Wales as part of their inquiry into alcohol and substance misuse.
As part of the inquiry, the Committee wanted to know about the effect that alcohol and substance misuse has on the people of Wales, how well these issues re currently being tackles, and whether the right local services are in place across Wales to help people and make sure that they know about the possible harms.
Participants gave their views through a reference group which will help the Committee make sure that they can take into account how alcohol and substance misuse affects real people in Wales on a daily basis.
The Committee will now consider the outcomes of the discussion, alongside other evidence given in formal oral evidence sessions and written submissions. They will use this information to write a report about the issue which will include recommendations to the Welsh Government.

Poet branches out into a greener future
As the Welsh Government invites expressions of interest for £1 million1 of support for new tree planting, with a deadline of 10 May
Wales’ former National Poet, Gillian Clarke, has been busy planting trees, four and a half thousand of them, at her smallholding near Llandysul in Ceredigion. And thanks to the Welsh Government’s Glastir Woodland Creation scheme, all farmers and landowners are being encouraged follow her example, maybe making better use of areas of land which are of limited agricultural value in ways that will support the farm business. The grants can amount to up to £9,000 per hectare and the deadline for expressions of interest is 10 May.
Gillian Clarke was Wales’ National Poet from 2008-2016. She was born in Cardiff and lives in Ceredigion. Her work has been on the GCSE and A Level exam syllabus for over thirty years, and she performs her poetry regularly for student audiences at Poetry Live, and in several European cities. She was awarded the Queen’s Gold medal for Poetry in 2010, the Wilfred Owen Award in 2012. Trees are one of her inspirations.
She says: “Four and a half thousand native trees: sessile oak, downy birch, rowan, hazel, wild cherry - even the names are beautiful - newly planted on six acres of our steepest land, fenced off from grazing sheep. Already the first leaves are opening. Red kites float overhead, birds are singing. Trees for the future, alive and hopeful. They inspire me to write poems, and a book about trees."
The Welsh Government’s Woodlands for Wales Strategy2, launched last year, aspires to increase woodland cover in Wales by at least 2,000 ha a year from 2020 to 2030. It proposes an increase in tree cover in the wider environment, on farms, the rural landscape and in areas around towns and cities, both to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and also to create a resilient and productive agriculture and towns that are healthier and more pleasant to live in. The Glastir Woodland Creation grants are intended to encourage landowners to help deliver this.
Sharon Thomas, the Woodland Trust’s Woodland Outreach Manager for Wales says: “It’s brilliant that Gillian Clarke is setting such a wonderful example to other landowners. Native trees can offer us so many benefits, reducing flood risk, improving water quality and providing superb habitats for wildlife, as well of course as a renewable source of valuable timber. At a time when, sadly, there is huge uncertainly around farming in Wales, the Glastir Woodland Creation scheme offers a great opportunity to farmers and other landowners to make use of all of their land in ways that are sustainable both economically and environmentally. Glastir Woodland Creation grants can amount to up to £9,000 per hectare. The Woodland Trust can offer free advice and support in making use of these, and we’re finding there is an increasing interest in this among landowners. Mae cyn Fardd Cenedlaethol Cymru, Gillian Clarke, wedi bod yn brysur yn plannu coed, pedair mil a hanner ohonynt, ar ei thyddyn ger Llandysul yng Ngheredigion. A diolch i gynllun Creu Coetir Glastir gan Lywodraeth Cymru, mae pob ffermwr a thirfeddiannwr yn cael eu hannog i ddilyn ei hesiampl, gan wneud defnydd gwell o ardaloedd o dir sydd o werth amaethyddol cyfyngedig mewn ffyrdd fydd yn cefnogi busnes y fferm. Gall y grantiau fod hyd at £ 9,000 yr hectar, a’r dyddiad cau ar gyfer mynegi diddordeb yw 10 Mai.
Roedd Gillian Clarke yn Fardd Cenedlaethol Cymru rhwng 2008-2016. Fe gafodd ei geni yng Nghaerdydd ac mae'n byw yng Ngheredigion. Fe gafodd y coed eu plannu ar chwe erw o'n tir mwyaf serth, wedi ei ffensio i ffwrdd o’r defaid. Mae'r dail cyntaf yn agor eisoes. Mae barcutiaid yn hedfan uwchben, mae adar yn canu. Coed ar gyfer y dyfodol, yn fyw ac yn llawn gobaith. Maen nhw'n fy ysbrydoli i ysgrifennu cerddi, a llyfr am goed."
Mae Strategaeth Coetiroedd i Gymru2 Llywodraeth Cymru, a lansiwyd y llynedd, yn anelu at gynyddu gorchudd coetir yng Nghymru o leiaf 2,000 ha bob blwyddyn o 2020 i 2030. Mae'n cynnig cynnydd mewn gorchudd coed yn yr amgylchedd ehangach, ar ffermydd, trwy’r dirwedd wledig ac mewn ardaloedd o amgylch trefi a dinasoedd, i amsugno carbon deuocsid o'r atmosffer a hefyd i greu amaethyddiaeth a threfi gwytnach a mwy cynhyrchiol sy'n iachach ac yn fwy dymunol i’r rhai sy’n byw ynddynt. Bwriad grantiau Creu Coetiroedd Glastir yw annog tirfeddianwyr i helpu i gyflawni hyn.

Dangosodd Timau Achub Mynydd Llanberis Dyffryn Ogwen sut maent yn helpu i achub bywydau ac yn gofalu am bobl sydd wedi eu hanafu ar y mynyddoedd. Cyflwyniad am sut i gadw’n ddiogel a pheryglon tân a thanau bwriadol a gafwyd gan y Gwasanaeth Tân lleol a bu’r gwasnaeth ambilwans yn egluro sut i wneud cymorth cyntaf syml. Daeth hyd yn oed Hex y ci heddlu i’r diwrnod hefyd ac cafwyd arddangosiad sut mae’r ci yn dal troseddwyr treisgar, diolch byth bod yr heddlu wedi dod a gwirfoddolwr eu hunain i weithio gyda’r ci ( er mawr ryddhad I Mr Evans!).
Dysgodd y plant fod cymaint o bobl a mudiadau yn gyfrifol am eu cadw’n ddiogel a bod cymaint o agweddau gwahanol i’w gwaith. Diolch yn fawr i PC Dewi Owen am drefnu diwrnod gwerth chweil i blant Bro Llifon.

Presentations were received from all the services namely, Ambulance, Fire Service, Mountain Rescue and the Police and an excellent opportunity to enter the vehicles, see how they work, see the equipment that is used as well as wearing the clothes and helmets. Even the Coastguard Helicopter flew low around the school.
The Rural Crimes Team showed various illegal objects and the pupils saw and touched the skin of different animals and the tusks of elephants, tusks and feet and fur coats of animals. Llanberis Dyffryn Ogwen Mountain Rescue Teams showed how they assist to save lives and look after people who have been injured on the mountains. The Local Fire Service gave a presentation on how to stay safe and fire dangers and arson, and the ambulance service explained how to give simple first aid. Even Hex, the police dog, attended and a display was given on how the dog catches violent offenders, thank heavens that the police had brought their own volunteer to work with the dog ( to the great relief of Mr Evans!).
The pupils learnt that many people and organizations are responsible for keeping them safe and that there are so many different aspects to their work. Thanks to PC Dewi Owen for organizing an excellent day for Bro Llifon pupils.

Participants gave their views through a reference group which will help the Committee make sure that they can take into account how alcohol and substance misuse affects real people in Wales on a daily basis.
The Committee will now consider the outcomes of the discussion, alongside other evidence given in formal oral evidence sessions and written submissions. They will use this information to write a report about the issue which will include recommendations to the Welsh Government.

Do you have a spare area of your school grounds? Why not share it with some people locally who might be looking for an allotment. In this school is meant an otherwise unused area is now looked after, and has helped strengthen links with the community.

Fel rhan o’r ymchwiliad, mae’r Pwyllgor am wybod sut mae camddefnyddio alcohol a sylweddau yn effeithio ar bobl yng Nghymru, pa mor dda y caiff y problemau hyn eu trin, ac a yw’r gwasanaethau lleol cywir ar waith ledled Cymru i helpu pobl ac i wneud yn siŵr eu bod yn gwybod am y niwed posibl.
Cynhaliwyd grŵp cyfeirio gyda cyfranogwyr a fydd yn helpu’r Pwyllgor i wneud yn siŵr y gellir cymryd i ystyriaeth sut mae camddefnyddio alcohol a sylweddau yn effeithio ar bobl go iawn yng Nghymru o ddydd i ddydd.
Bydd y Pwyllgor yn ystyried canlyniadau’r trafodaeth, ochr yn ochr â thystiolaeth arall a roddwyd mewn sesiynau tystiolaeth ffurfiol ac yn ysgrifenedig. Bydd yn defnyddio’r wybodaeth hon i ysgrifennu adroddiad ar y mater a fydd yn cynnwys argymhellion i Lywodraeth Cymru.

On Wednesday 21 January the Health and Social Care Committee met with service users and service providers from across Wales as part of their inquiry into alcohol and substance misuse.
As part of the inquiry, the Committee wanted to know about the effect that alcohol and substance misuse has on the people of Wales, how well these issues re currently being tackles, and whether the right local services are in place across Wales to help people and make sure that they know about the possible harms.
Participants gave their views through a reference group which will help the Committee make sure that they can take into account how alcohol and substance misuse affects real people in Wales on a daily basis.
The Committee will now consider the outcomes of the discussion, alongside other evidence given in formal oral evidence sessions and written submissions. They will use this information to write a report about the issue which will include recommendations to the Welsh Government.

Cafwyd cyflwyniadau gan yr holl wasanaethau sef Ambiwlans, y Gwasanaeth Tân, Achub Mynydd a’r Heddlu. a chyfle gwych i fynd mewn i’r cerbydau ,gweld sut maent yn gweithio, gweld yr offer a ddefnyddir yn ogystal a gwisgo’r dillad a’r helmedau. Daeth hyd yn oed Hofrennydd Gwylwyr y Glannau i hedfan yn isel o amgylch yr ysgol.
Dangosodd y Tîm Troseddau Gwledig amrywiaeth o wrthrychau anghyfreithlon a chafwyd cyfle i weld a chyffwrdd croen gwahanol anifeiliad ac ysgythrau eliffantod ysgithrau a thraed a cotiau ffwr anifeiliaid. Dangosodd Timau Achub Mynydd Llanberis Dyffryn Ogwen sut maent yn helpu i achub bywydau ac yn gofalu am bobl sydd wedi eu hanafu ar y mynyddoedd. Cyflwyniad am sut i gadw’n ddiogel a pheryglon tân a thanau bwriadol a gafwyd gan y Gwasanaeth Tân lleol a bu’r gwasnaeth ambilwans yn egluro sut i wneud cymorth cyntaf syml. Daeth hyd yn oed Hex y ci heddlu i’r diwrnod hefyd ac cafwyd arddangosiad sut mae’r ci yn dal troseddwyr treisgar, diolch byth bod yr heddlu wedi dod a gwirfoddolwr eu hunain i weithio gyda’r ci ( er mawr ryddhad I Mr Evans!).
Dysgodd y plant fod cymaint o bobl a mudiadau yn gyfrifol am eu cadw’n ddiogel a bod cymaint o agweddau gwahanol i’w gwaith. Diolch yn fawr i PC Dewi Owen am drefnu diwrnod gwerth chweil i blant Bro Llifon.

Presentations were received from all the services namely, Ambulance, Fire Service, Mountain Rescue and the Police and an excellent opportunity to enter the vehicles, see how they work, see the equipment that is used as well as wearing the clothes and helmets. Even the Coastguard Helicopter flew low around the school.
The Rural Crimes Team showed various illegal objects and the pupils saw and touched the skin of different animals and the tusks of elephants, tusks and feet and fur coats of animals. Llanberis Dyffryn Ogwen Mountain Rescue Teams showed how they assist to save lives and look after people who have been injured on the mountains. The Local Fire Service gave a presentation on how to stay safe and fire dangers and arson, and the ambulance service explained how to give simple first aid. Even Hex, the police dog, attended and a display was given on how the dog catches violent offenders, thank heavens that the police had brought their own volunteer to work with the dog ( to the great relief of Mr Evans!).
The pupils learnt that many people and organizations are responsible for keeping them safe and that there are so many different aspects to their work. Thanks to PC Dewi Owen for organizing an excellent day for Bro Llifon pupils.

Charlotte has a humid subtropical climate. It is located several miles east of the Catawba River and southeast of Lake Norman, the largest man-made lake in North Carolina. Lake Wylie and Mountain Island Lake are two smaller man-made lakes located near the city.
