A fundraising event that gets me out hiking AND giving back to trails? Sign me up!
This is my first year participating in WTA’s Hike-a-Thon event. Hike-a-Thon is a month-long fundraiser for Washington Trails Association where participants collect pledges and then spend the month of August hiking.
Why am I participating? I love hiking and I want to help protect the trails I enjoy so much.
Want to support Washington's hiking trails and help me make my miles count? Consider making a donation in my name. Donations can be made through the month of August and any amount helps. I'll be tracking my mileage and posting updates on Flickr. Click here for details.
The amount of support I've already received has overwhelmed me. A special thank you to all who have already donated - you've helped me reach (and far surpass) my initial fundraising goal.
The decline of the bee population in the USA should be more alarming to the general public then it appears to be. Places such as the Cox Arboretum have taken care to provide the habitat bees need, however it is not nearly enough. This link to an article by Smithsonian highlights the seriousness of the problem!

Horses graze on grass where a fire scar helped promote its regrowth after a fire burned the understory at the base of Ponderosa pine trees in the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service (FS) Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, where the Heber Wild Horse Territory is home to many feral horses in the high central Arizona area, , on Sept. 26, 2019. Work has begun to draft proposed actions that balances feral horse, wildlife, and land management of the forest and private cattle operations. The wildlife in this area also includes elk, mule deer, pronghorn sheep, javelina, mountain lions, and black bear. Of these, horse are the only ones who are not prey to the mountain lion and black bears, and cannot currently be culled as are elk. Also, cattle, elk and horses graze on the same type of grass, a challenge to manage the animals who feed on it, and also for the grass which also needs water in an increasingly drought prone area. In several areas, ranchers have build tin roofed structures that capture water in tanks that feed watering sites surrounding it. The horse population has increased the demand for water from these sites that did not originally account for them. For more information about the Wild Horse and Burro program, please go to fs.fed.us/wild-horse-burro.

My Canon Rebel XS is acting up. I was shooting a bunch of photos (indoors, camera on tripod) -- when a black band began appearing on my photos (see above). In three successive photos, the blackened area moves about the picture. I took the lens off and tried a different lens -- same thing, blackened. I shot a bunch of photos without any lens, and the triangle appeared to move about -- then suddenly I got an "Error 99 Shooting is not possible" message. I have changed the battery, restarted a number of times, but still get the message.
Is the camera completely kaput? Has anyone else experienced this?
Everyone raves about how much better European coffee is. When it's served with cream filled chocolate cups, does any other coffee even stand a chance?
(Note: I agree that the coffee I've had in Europe is much better quality than that which is served in most of America, so you're welcome to leave your "American coffee sucks!!" cracks, but it's probably not something I haven't heard already nor something I'll disagree with.)
