This past weekend, I helped put on Terre Haute's first ever Help Portrait event at Lighthouse Mission. Help-Portrait is a global movement of photographers, hairstylists and makeup artists using their time, tools and expertise to give back to those in need. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing people's story and watching their reaction as they saw their picture.
When we first arrived at the shelter to set-up our photo equipment, I bumped into Jeffery who finished doing his shelter duties in the morning. He had a long beard, dirty clothes, and messy hair. I invited him to get his free picture at our event and told him about how we can give him a portrait for free! His eyes lit up and quickly ran upstairs where he was staying. The next time I saw him was when he asked me to take his picture. His beard was gone, he was wearing a suit, and his hair nicely combed. He said to me with a grin on his face, "Remember me?". After I took his picture, I showed him the results. His eyes lit up again and was excited to see how well it turned out. He told me that he loved to get dressed up and hadn't done so in a while. Help-Portrait was the first time in a long time where he can dress up and look nice. He later started showing his picture to other people around the shelter convincing them to get their pictures taken.
She suddenly decided that she needed help to paint, and starting yelling "help" and got upset until I started painting.

This was our team, # 3. Just one of four teams that partook in this event.

ID help needed, At first I thought this was a black lichen but now that I get a close look at it it appears to be a very dark colored moss. Growing on sandstone along with several lichens one of which has been identified by oloesel as probably Caloplaca flavovirescens 'Sulphur-firedot Lichen'. Ok, he really didn't do much. He has cataracts and didn't see me. Oh, and no opposable thumbs.

I bought this Panasonic RX-5012 yesterday from a charity shop for £10 with no guarantee it would work, but I've got 30 days to take it back in...
The radio works okay (needs a new tuning knob) though the cassette player doesn't, my dad's taken it apart and it would seem that it's the motor that's broken (EG500AD 9V CW) as there's no sound and the belt's not moving. I need to know if it's worth repairing or not? I'm not sure what this is worth in working order and the only motor I've found is from New Zealand so any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have looked in my books but not sure which this is. It's a blue I think. Wirral, NorthWest England. Also seen in a local meadow, August this year.

This is a pic that I found stashed away from my trip to Guatemala this past August. I took so many pics that a lot of good ones got lost in the mix. We have a fundraiser coming up on Dec 3rd that I need to bring a bunch of pics to so I was going through them all tonight and thought i would post this one up for you guys to see.
This was the little girl who's house we were working on. What you are looking at is her living room, where we kept alot of the supplies. While we were pouring concrete I turned around and noticed her sweeping up the concrete dust that was all over the floor...she was adorable.
I just finished reading "The Genius of Dogs" by Brian Hare (brianhare.net/the-genius-of-dogs/). It was a fascinating look at how the cognitive abilities of dogs do warrant a status of exceptional intelligence. Though obviously their smarts seem lesser when compared to our own, it's usually based on our tests. Or to quote Albert Einstein, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
One obviously bad test in that spirit is how well these canines are at helping me work.
I had a horrible headache today, one of those lightning-bolt-down-the-side-of-your-head / vice-grip-on-your-temples kind. 4 of the 5 dogs I'm babysitting this week decided today was the perfect day for marathon barking sessions. I wasn't happy. But here's the strange thing: Norm is usually the worst dog for barking - in volume, octive and volume. In fact, Buhunds were bred for barking.
But for some reason, he seemed particularly sensitive to my pain today (very out of character). He insisted on lying on top of me (his way of showing affection) while I worked.
Sure, I couldn't use the laptop while he licked my one hand, and insisted on getting pet with the other. And he was absolutely useless helping me figure out how to sort based on a complicated sub-query. But I'd say he helped me in a different way, based on a different test, by showing me some love, not to mention not barking (even with obnoxious screaming neighbourhood kids running around just outside the window and construction going on down the street).
Best assistant, ever.
(Tucker, the Jack Russel also pictured, was not helpful. Totally part of the problem. But he's cute, and somehow never misses a photo-op.)
In light of the recent tragic events of Japan I wanted to create an illustration surrounding the events.
