GEORGIA DOME, Atlanta Ga., Sep. 17, 2012 – More than 100 Soldiers with the Georgia Army National Guard marched onto the field carrying a U.S. Flag as part of the Falcons’ Home Opener against the Denver Broncos. The flag stretched the entire length of the field as 71,000 fans paused to sing the National Anthem before the game.
The marketing department of the Recruiting and Retention Battalion (R & R BN) set up the event with the Falcons to help The National Guard to get out in front of the Falcon fans.
“It is great to get over 100 Georgia Guardsmen out in front of the fans here at The Georgia Dome participating in our National Anthem,” said Maj. Billy Chau of Headquarters and Headquarters Company R & R BN. “Our troops do so many amazing things around the world and some require a great deal of sacrifice. Events like this provide a service to our community but are a lot of fun for the troops who will receive a ticket to watch the game after helping carrying the flag.”
A text, in english, From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
The fountain at the junction of three roads (tre vie) marks the terminal point of the "modern" Acqua Vergine, the revivified Aqua Virgo, one of the ancient aqueducts that supplied water to ancient Rome. In 19 BC, supposedly with the help of a virgin, Roman technicians located a source of pure water some 13 km (8 miles) from the city. (This scene is presented on the present fountain's façade.) However, the eventual indirect route of the aqueduct made its length some 22 km (14 miles). This Aqua Virgo led the water into the Baths of Agrippa. It served Rome for more than four hundred years. The coup de grâce for the urban life of late classical Rome came when the Goth besiegers in 537/38 broke the aqueducts. Medieval Romans were reduced to drawing water from polluted wells and the Tiber River, which was also used as a sewer.
The Roman custom of building a handsome fountain at the endpoint of an aqueduct that brought water to Rome was revived in the 15th century, with the Renaissance. In 1453, Pope Nicholas V finished mending the Acqua Vergine aqueduct and built a simple basin, designed by the humanist architect Leon Battista Alberti, to herald the water's arrival.
In 1629 Pope Urban VIII, finding the earlier fountain insufficiently dramatic, asked Bernini to sketch possible renovations, but when the Pope died, the project was abandoned. Bernini's lasting contribution was to resite the fountain from the other side of the square to face the Quirinal Palace (so the Pope could look down and enjoy it). Though Bernini's project was torn down for Salvi's fountain, there are many Bernini touches in the fountain as it was built. An early, striking and influential model by Pietro da Cortona, preserved in the Albertina, Vienna, also exists, as do various early 18th century sketches, most unsigned, as well as a project attributed to Nicola Michetti, one attributed to Ferdinando Fuga and a French design by Edme Bouchardon.
Competitions had become the rage during the Baroque era to design buildings, fountains, and even the Spanish Steps. In 1730 Pope Clement XII organized a contest in which Nicola Salvi initially lost to Alessandro Galilei — but due to the outcry in Rome over the fact that a Florentine won, Salvi was awarded the commission anyway. Work began in 1732, and the fountain was completed in 1762, long after Clement's death, when Pietro Bracci's Oceanus (god of all water) was set in the central niche.
Salvi died in 1751, with his work half-finished, but before he went he made sure a stubborn barber's unsightly sign would not spoil the ensemble, hiding it behind a sculpted vase, called by Romans the asso di coppe, "the "Ace of Cups".
The Trevi Fountain was finished in 1762 by Giuseppe Pannini, who substituted the present allegories for planned sculptures of Agrippa and "Trivia", the Roman virgin.
The fountain was refurbished in 1998; the stonework was scrubbed and the fountain provided with recirculating pumps.
The backdrop for the fountain is the Palazzo Poli, given a new facade with a giant order of Corinthian pilasters that link the two main stories. Taming of the waters is the theme of the gigantic scheme that tumbles forward, mixing water and rockwork, and filling the small square. Tritons guide Oceanus' shell chariot, taming seahorses (hippocamps).
In the center is superimposed a robustly modelled triumphal arch. The center niche or exedra framing Oceanus has free-standing columns for maximal light-and-shade. In the niches flanking Oceanus, Abundance spills water from her urn and Salubrity holds a cup from which a snake drinks. Above, bas reliefs illustrate the Roman origin of the aqueducts.
The tritons and horses provide symmetrical balance, with the maximum contrast in their mood and poses (by 1730, rococo was already in full bloom in France and Germany).
A traditional legend holds that if visitors throw a coin into the fountain, they are ensured a return to Rome. Among those who are unaware that the "three coins" of Three Coins in the Fountain were thrown by three different individuals, a reported current interpretation is that two coins will lead to a new romance and three will ensure either a marriage or divorce. A reported current version of this legend is that it is lucky to throw three coins with one's right hand over one's left shoulder into the Trevi Fountain.
Approximately 3,000 Euros are thrown into the fountain each day and are collected at night. The money has been used to subsidize a supermarket for Rome's needy. However, there are regular attempts to steal coins from the fountain.
Amtrak, the national passenger rail system, provides service to Helper station, operating its California Zephyr daily in both directions between Chicago and Emeryville, California, across the bay from San Francisco. The now defunct Rio Grande Zephyr also stopped at Helper. It also lies along U.S. Route 6/191, which split just north of the city - U.S. 191 heads northeast to Duchesne, while U.S. 6 heads northwest to Spanish Fork. Both continue together southeast to I-70 just west of Green River.
We think this is a picture of May Bourne (or possibly her daughter), a relative of Stewart's. We think it was taken in Kenya where the family worked for - again, we think - Brooke Bond, or one of the big plantation owners. Whether the licence plate is English and exported or Kenyan, don't know, but have just discovered that the first Kenyan reg was 1938. Any info gratefully received...we don't know for sure who, where, even what car! If the licence plate tells you anything, we would be pleased to know...

Several students had their first experience using a shovel the other day! What were they doing you ask? Well, improving bird habitat at the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Christiana Manville, wildlife biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program, worked with seven national honor students from Pinecrest Cadence School in Henderson, Nevada on this project. The high school students pulled weeds, planted native wetland and riparian plants, and caged the plants to protect them from rabbits. They enjoyed their experience and expressed interest in helping maintain this area for the rest of the school year.

VERY cool, thanks for sharing this! I’ve seen some of this kind of art before, but hadn’t seen quite as good a collection as this. I especially liked the one where they made the trees look like they were “on fire” — that was particularly impressive. Thanks again. //Steve//

For the first time, and as the first events of Berlin's Pride Month, on Saturday, 26 June 2021, a hybrid, star-shaped demonstration of the LGBTQIA+ community took place. With multifaceted thematic focuses, three individual demonstrations from various Berlin districts (East Pride, Queerschutz & QTIBIPOC United) moved in together towards Alexanderplatz.
With the help of these corona-compliant individual demonstrations, large crowds were avoided.

In the whimsical world of the pantry, the alphabet noodles are in quite a predicament. They're staging a 'soup opera' with a dramatic twist – they've forgotten how to spell! The vowels are having an identity crisis, unsure if they're consonants in disguise, while the consonants are tangled up, forming words like 'zqxm' and 'flrp'. It's chaos in the cupboard as the noodles send out an SOS (Save Our Spelling), hoping for a hero with a dictionary cape to swoop in and restore order to their al dente universe. Will the noodles ever get their letters in line, or will the soup be forever a jumbled broth of nonsensical linguine linguistics? Stay tuned for the next steamy episode of 'Alphabet Soup: The Great Noodle Conundrum'! 🍜
Greater Manchester Police has today (14 July) joined up with Manchester City Council to support charity Syria Relief with the launch of a humanitarian aid volunteering facility in Openshaw, Manchester.
The facility, provided by Manchester City Council at New Smithfield Market will give the general public an opportunity to physically and positively support the planning and hard work that goes into collecting and preparing aid for Syria. Communities are encouraged to take donations of clothes, blankets and food to the facility and get involved with packing them onto containers ready to be sent to those in need Syria.
There are many people in Greater Manchester who wish to help the Syrian refugees who have suffered terribly during the Syrian civil war, and would like to do more than simply donate money to charity. The volunteering facility offers an alternative to people who feel compelled to travel out to Syria and risk their lives to help the humanitarian aid effort.
Greater Manchester residents are being urged to stay in the UK to help at centres such as this one, or donate to well-known charities that have the expertise and access to deliver the humanitarian aid to the right areas in Syria.
GMP Chief Constable Sir Peter Fahy, who is the national Prevent lead for ACPO TAM said:
“We know there are many people in Greater Manchester and nationally who want to support the millions of people who are caught up in the Syrian conflict. Anyone who does travel there is putting themselves in considerable danger and that is why this volunteering facility is so valuable right here in Greater Manchester, giving people the opportunity to donate and assist with the humanitarian effort without putting themselves and others in danger.
“It’s very positive to see communities and organisations working together and this partnership highlights the support that can be given locally to a national cause. “
Sir Peter was joined at the launch by Deputy Leader of Manchester City Council, Councillor Bernard Priest and the Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Jim Battle.
Deputy PCC Jim Battle said:
“The humanitarian crisis in Syria is something people in Greater Manchester care deeply about. This volunteering facility gives the opportunity to assist some of the most vulnerable people without the need to travel to the conflict zone.
“Community spirit has yet again come to the fore, and it’s a real credit to Greater Manchester people that they are so willing to give their own time and donations to help people far worse off than themselves. Greater Manchester Police, Manchester City Council and people from all across Greater Manchester have shown the whole world that they care.”
Cllr Priest said:
"I know that many Mancunians and people from across the North West have been strongly moved by the plight of those suffering because of the Syrian conflict, and want to do more than just donate money to charity.
"This facility is an excellent opportunity for our communities to provide experienced organisations with items that will make a difference to those in need - such as clothes, blankets and food. I urge Manchester residents to visit this centre rather than risk tragedy by attempting to travel to Syria themselves."
Chairman of Syria Relief, Dr Basil Hatahet added: "While the news currently focuses on the brutality of the war and the emergence of fundamentalist groups in Syria, the ever-worsening humanitarian situation and human suffering continue.
“This joint initiative between Syria Relief, Manchester City Council and Great Manchester Police invites the citizens of Manchester to help alleviate the suffering by giving their time and efforts, as well as their financial and in-kind donation in a safe and practical way."
