Smoke levels have been out of control lately. On the plus side, it makes for some dramatic sun ray photos.

Today I played tour guide for my visiting friend, Lee Nordbye Photography. We started off with sunrise at Pitt Lake, then Alouette Lake, where I accidentally dropped my remote in the water. It is currently sitting in a bag of rice. After a little pit-stop downtown for more coffee and lunch, it was back on the road.

We checked out the eagles in Brackendale, where I needed a much longer lens. The eagles weren't very active. We were hoping for clear skies to shoot the stars up in the Whistler area, but clouds rolled in. We ended the night with sunset at Porteau Cove, which as cliché as it might sound, was the perfect end to a perfect day!

I hadn't been here for sunset before, and had only been to the old ferry pier to shoot stars, so when we went for a walk on the beach, the amount of driftwood that littered the shores blew my mind. I found this HUGE tree stump with gnarled roots sitting a good eight feet out of the water. Of course I had to climb up! Anything for the shot, right?

Decay and growth in the coastal rain forest. Photographed in Pacific Rim National Park between Tofino and Ucluelet, Vancouver Island, BC, Canada.

"Everything in the rainforest is connected, a cycle of life in perfect balance. From the lush green that carpets the base of towering, centuries-old trees, to the salmon that attract grizzlies, black bear, and birds to feed, it’s an environment that nourishes everything in it."

The Aurora was at storm level today. The sky just lit up around 2 AM.

Holy hell I'm exhausted. Got home late from work Thursday night, woke up early the next day to head to the U.S. to pick up some new gear. There's been a rehearsal dinner, a wedding, the reception, and another trip south of the border for some visiting and vacation. I'm finally home, and get to enjoy a night to myself.

After the rehearsal dinner Friday night, instead of going home to sleep, I met up with my buddy Daniel and we headed out to One-Mile Lake out past Whistler.

The skies were clear, and I hadn't been out shooting the night sky in five weeks. That's far too long. I knew that I had to take advantage of it. After I was finished my star trail, I noticed the rad light from the moon lighting up the boardwalk, and thought it might make for an interesting post in the #selfiesunday saga.
