Last night's Geomagnetic Storm lit up the sky over Howe Sound and Squamish. It's been forever since I last photographed the Aurora Borealis so I played it safe and drove away from the city for the sure shot. The stars had finally aligned with the solar forecast and our local weather forecast. Southbound traffic was constant on the Sea to Sky Highway as I made my way north to Porteau Cove Marine Park. I arrived just after 9:30pm and it looked like I had missed the show. The light was fading away. After an hour or so, it gradually built back up and then BOOM as if someone flicked on the light switch. Photographers and spectators started clapping and cheering. That was a first. I caught this shot at the peak. Captured at Porteau Cove Provincial Park, Squamish-Lillooet D, 45 mins north of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ~ October 11, 2021 💚

Is this photo too dark? Curious.

It's way too dark on my phone.

indows in the West End reflect golden hour as blue hour falls on snow capped Mount Seymour in North Vancouver. Looking across English Bay to the north end of Kitsilano Beach at Kits Point then over to the shores of Sunset Beach and the Seawall along Beach Avenue at Cardero Street. Captured from Kitsilano, Vancouver British Columbia, Canada ~ November 30, 2020 🗻💙

Can you spot the giant blue heron at the Sunset Beach Park? It's painted on the Electric Vehicle Charging Station right next to the 9m (30ft) tall white 4G LTE Cell Tower (eNB ID 127857 Bands 2, 4, 5, 7 ~ www.cellmapper.net) 📲⚡🔌🚙

The Full Snow Moon rises from behind Eagle Mountain and high above Buntzen Bay on the Indian Arm. The setting sun paints the West End gold and reflects off English Bay. A beautiful day along the Seawall at the English Bay Bathhouse and Inukshuk. I think this is the first time since August 15, 2019 (6mo) that the sky has been clear enough to view the full moon. Captured this evening from the Point Grey Foreshore in Kitsilano, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ~ February 8, 2020 🌝

The sweet smell of spring fills the air in Vancouver. I love this time of year when new growth makes the city come alive with brilliant colours. Shot almost into the sun using a polarizer - I could see the cool clouds when composing it, but couldn't quite see all the crazy rays surrounding this great iron sculpture due to the extreme brightness. No artificial sun rays were added in post. Post processing is Silver FX.

I've been wanting to take a photo like that for a while. For years, I had seen those foggy photos of Vancouver, without even having an opportunity to get out there and take it when the moment was right. I wouldn't say the moment was perfect when I was there, as the fog was pretty thin and only covered parts of the landscape well enough and only for very short amounts of time. But I'm happy with that one shot I got.

I have to confess, it is heavily processed. I used 8 shots to reduce the noise, and the stars come from a stock image with open source license (very heavily modified). I really wanted to capture them myself, using the same focal length I used for the landscape (135mm) and pointing the camera towards the same direction as the shot was taken to make it "astronomically accurate". But I don't foresee any time soon when I'll be able to. The conditions probably won't be right for a little while, and my schedule is too busy for me to go out at night again for a long time. I wish I had more time to shoot.

As for those who might worry that the photo is a composite, I want to tell you that I wanted to create an image, above anything else. Yes, that night, I could see the stars. But I didn't have enough space in my bag to bring my tracker. So while the exact image is not 100% accurate to what I saw on that night, it's the general idea that matters to me and I want to be open about it. My intention is not to deceive anyone.

Got to use the Smooth water App on my camera.

Yesterday's view of North Vancouver and snow on top of one of our north shore mountains. The three summits you see here are Mount Seymour, Tim Jones Peak (2nd Pump) and Pump Peak. Harbour Air prepares for take-off from Coal Harbour. Captured from Canada Place, Vancouver British Columbia, Canada ~ November 13, 2020 🗻

The middle peak is named after a local hero, Tim Jones, who led North Shore Rescue (NSR) and helped rescue over 1,600 people from danger. Tim worked as an advanced life support paramedic and as Paramedic in Charge for the B.C. Ambulance Service in North Vancouver, along with volunteer leadership of North Shore Rescue 🙏💙

It's 8:08pm and someone has fallen asleep in the clock tower at the Vancouver Block building. I went a whole 6 months forgetting to change the clock on my camera. The time is correct now 😂 Looking northeast up Granville Street from Nelson Street. Captured tonight in Downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ~ March 12, 2020 😴💤

The Super Pink Moon rises over Mount Baker and a historic net loft that sits on wood pilings over the Steveston Channel (South Arm of the Fraser River). This is the first of two supermoons this year, the second one on May 26 which will also be a blood moon (total lunar eclipse) Supermoons, on average, are visually about 7% bigger and about 15% brighter than a typical full Moon. This is because the moon’s orbit is closest to the earth.

The Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site has buildings that date back to 1885 when this area was booming with canneries. The roof touched by the moon, is the Phoenix Seine Net Loft. It’s older ‘twin’ building, the Phoenix Gill Net Loft (not pictured), is in the process of being restored/rebuilt and is currently dismantled. The Phoenix Cannery was Richmond’s first cannery.

The bright orange/red smoke stack belongs to the SS Master which is last wooden-hulled and steam-powered tug boat still in existence in B.C. (and likely Canada) Built in 1922 by Arthur Moscrop at the Beach Avenue Shipyard in False Creek. Seaspan just finished restoring this 85-foot long, 225 tons tug just in time for it’s 100 year birthday. The black diamonds on it’s smoke stack represent the towing of coal barges from Vancouver Island to Coal Harbour.

Oddly enough, the clouds around Mt. Baker appear to be part of the mountain (or vice-versa)

The forest fires in British Columbia have been brutal this year, not the first time the sun has been so red. The smoke seems to blow into Alberta every few days.

Saturday night's spectacular moonrise over Vancouver Harbour. Traffic on the Lions Gate Bridge is treated to a glimpse of this year's Full Buck Moon. I watched it rise from the horizon while sitting on the beach listening to the waves roll in. Serenity Now! Is it just me or does anyone else get reenergized from the ocean?

Skimming over the Burrard Inlet, under the Lions Gate Bridge, through the First Narrows to the lighthouse at Brockton Point in Stanley Park, to the container terminal at the Port of Vancouver and beyond to Metrotown skyscrapers in Burnaby. Single shot captured from John Lawson Park in Ambleside, West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ~ July 4, 2020 🌝

“Traditionally, the full Moon in July is called the Buck Moon because a buck’s antlers are in full growth mode at this time. This full Moon was also known as the Thunder Moon because thunderstorms are so frequent during this month.” ~ www.almanac.com/content/full-moon-july

Tonight's Full Super Worm Moon over North Vancouver. Looking across Burrard Inlet to Lower Lonsdale with Lonsdale Quay and The Shipyards viewable past a bulk carrier named Pacific Seagull. The supermoon creeps out from behind Eagle Mountain and into some clouds creating a fiery glow. A little snow does amazing things for landscape photographers

A Squamish Nation totem pole welcomes all with open arms. This was hand carved from an old growth cedar log picked from the enchanted forest of Hollyburn Mountain. It faces southwest to the outer section of the Burrard Inlet and English Bay. Looking over the mouth of the First Narrows to Stanley Park and Vancouver's famous sea stack Slhx̱i7lsh, a.k.a. Siwash Rock. Up above on the cliff is a lookout which was the site of "Fort Siwash" where an artillery battery was mounted during the First World War. Captured at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ~ January 23, 2022 🌲☁️

With open arms to all who pass our shores, this Welcoming Figure was raised at the first K'aya'chtn (gathering of ocean canoes). The Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) dedicated the figure to the citizens of West Vancouver on July 25, 2001, with this prayer on the plaque....

"Welcome/Guardian Woman in gratitude to all our Ta7as/Grandmothers.

For all the teachings of our lands, history, of who we are.

For all the teaching in the ways we take care of one another as:

elders, parents, brothers, sisters and cousins, our children, the future generations.

For all the teachings in the ways we share the wealth of the land, the seas and the air."
