Shown at the 2014 Geneva Auto Show alongside the Production Rhino Mk IV is the Team Magnus Racing, Paris Dakar Rally-Raid offroad racing truck.

Magnus Racing will be campaigning the Rhino in the 2015 Dakar Rally, and other extreme offroad racing events.

The forth generation of the Rhino has been developed in conjunction with the British firm Bowler.

The Rhino utilises the latest edition of the JLR V8 powertrains. The 5.0 litre Supercharger V8 petrol produces 375 kw and 625 Nm or torque. The 4.4 litre turbo-diesel produces 250 kW and 700 Nm of torque. Both engines are backed by the ZF 8HP automatic transmission, incorporating the advance Bosch/ZF Electric Hybrid drive to reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption in the on-road edition - for racing, this extends the range and reduces the amount of fuel that must be carried.

The Rhino has height-adjustable suspension to increase ground clearance, along with short front and rear overhangs to aid offroad maneuverability and traction. The Rhino's Dakar-bred chassis has a proven track record in offroad racing and durability events.

And, of course, the trademark 'X' for Xavier, the founder of the Ralston Corporation is displayed proudly and prominently in the 21st century interpretation of the the traditional grille. The tail profile of the Rhino is enhanced by the 'X'-form incorporated into rocket-pod tail lamps flanking the additional tire.

The 2015 Ralston Rhino MkIV Rally-Raid racing truck featured here has been produced as part of the Flickr LUGNuts 77th build challenge, - 'Designing the Ralston Rhino'.

Aiming for a limited run of 25 cars, Gemballa has reworked the Enzo's aerodynamics, adding appropriate carbon-fiber bits that give the Maranello mauler much more of a techie Teutonic flavor. Active aero components include a front spoiler lip and a rear wing that increase downforce and improve high-speed handling. Gemballa also provides additional cooling ducts for the brakes and engine compartment, with inlets on the roof and behind the doors.

The Germans have tried to make the MIG-U1 a bit more livable with such niceties as an optional electrohydraulic height adjustment function which, at the touch of a button, lifts the body by 1.8 inches — particularly useful when negotiating such urban obstacles as speed bumps. The car automatically lowers itself back to the original position at speeds above 50 mph.

Gemballa adds forged alloy wheels, shod with 265/35R19 rubber in front and 335/30R20 in the rear.

The massive Ferrari V12 has been gently massaged to produce 691 horsepower, largely the result of an upgraded ECU and a freer-flowing exhaust with quad tailpipes and pneumatic flap control.

The cockpit also gets the Gemballa touch, with redesigned seats, center console and steering wheel rendered in leather and Ultrasuede. There is also a high-end multimedia system with 950 watts of power, a DVD changer, a 7-inch touchscreen and, of course, an iPod connection.

"... the sheer ease of driving it – at least on public roads – makes it a shockingly fast, massively entertaining road warrior. Of all the AMG beasts I've sampled – and there have been many – this has to be the most exciting." - Richard Bremner, Autocar.

Offered here is one of the most exclusive and sought-after limited-edition Mercedes-Benz models of recent years: the CLK DTM AMG Coupé, only 100 examples of which were produced. Developed by Mercedes-Benz's official performance division, AMG, the DTM took its name from the eponymous German touring car race series - the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters - and was built on the platform of the '2nd Generation' C209 CLK (Coupé Leicht Kurz - Coupé Light Short) that had been introduced in 2002. But whereas the DTM competition cars were limited by the regulations to a normally aspirated 4.0-litre V8 engine producing less than 500bhp, AMG's road version came with a supercharged 5.4-litre unit pumping out some 582 horsepower, making it the most powerful in the CLK range. The five-speed semi-automatic transmission is controlled by the 'supercar standard' shift paddles ahead of the steering wheel. Height-adjustable spring/shock absorber units are fitted all round and the suspension bushes are stiffer, while the DTM's redesigned rear suspension owes little to that of the stock CLK. There are also bigger and stronger AMG composite brakes. A bespoke Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) helps keep everything under control, aided by a mechanical limited-slip differential. Weighing 1,742kg, the CLK DTM AMG races to 100km/h in a trifling 3.9 seconds and runs into the rev limiter at 320km/h.

The car's aggressive styling was modelled on the racing version used by AMG works driver Bernd Schneider to win the 2003 DTM championship. Its deep front apron, large air intake ducts, prominently flared wheelarches, boot-mounted rear wing and large-diameter (19" front/20" rear) alloy wheels are all elements developed from the DTM cars. Like its racing counterpart, the road car makes liberal use of carbon fibre for its body panels, while the interior is unmistakably that of a competition car, albeit one trimmed and equipped to Mercedes-Benz's highest standards. Carbon fibre is also used for much of the interior fittings including the lightweight leather/Alcantara trimmed bucket seats, while the rim of the AMG sports steering wheel is covered in high-grip buckskin. There are no rears seats in the CLK DTM AMG, which is strictly a two-seater. The instrumentation consists of a digital rev counter, white-faced speedometer, and oil and water temperature gauges, while the CLK's COMAND infotainment system is retained. An aluminium plinth on the centre console surrounding the 'PRND' gear selector is engraved 'CLK DTM One out of 100', and there are 'AMG' logos to the door kick-plates.

Despite an asking price of over €240,000, all 100 cars sold out immediately. High-profile owners included Formula 1 drivers Jenson Button and Takuma Sato. A limited-edition run of 80 cabriolets followed.

This Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG Coupé was delivered new to Japan and has been imported into the European continent via Switzerland.

But he's still not done...

The history of the base ZIL-111 started in 1956. ZIL-111D with a body "convertible" is a modified ZIL-111G with a body "limousine" produced since 1962, which in turn was a modification of the basic model ZIL-111.

The first car to receive the (still unofficial) this index was constructed in 1948, the ZIS-110M number 5. He is the only five cars in this series had a streamlined body with a single pontoon sidewalls, similar in appearance to the body "Packard Clipper" in 1947. Second ZIS-111 "Moscow" appeared in the early 1950s, he was a creation of designer Valentin zilovskogo sprout. It was built only two or three copies, one of which was shown at the Exhibition of Economic Achievements. At the exhibition visitors, this car did not cause great pride in the domestic auto industry. Frankly American car-like "Buick" of the late 1940s, nothing but a big bird on the hood, did not attract attention, and generally looked mediocre.

In the early 1950s in the American automotive industry has arisen a tendency to change the annual lineup. As a rule, these changes were only the exterior and interior, chassis remained the same for several years. Keep up with such a rapid fashion could not even Europe, not to mention the Soviet Union with its planned economy. Indeed, the car just did, put on the conveyor belt - and the next year to change all the seals, snap-in, spend millions of rubles for the sake of fashion. The only solution here was to create a machine progressive enough to "margin of safety" was enough for a few years.

Knowing this and seeing that the plant itself could not find a worthy replacement for veteran ZIS-110 ZIS leadership decided to hold a competition to create a project perspective the car - ZIS-111 new generation. Among a number of proposals liderovali two projects already built by ZIS-111 "Moscow" sprout and experienced car with the outline of "Packard" 1955 model year, a young designer from the LM Yeremeyev.

It was a clash of different schools, different approaches: a, zilovskogo, and another, dared to revise established views of the plant. Battles have been hot. ZIS sprout had already been built and almost ready to launch into production, but the option Eremeeva turned much more fresh and sovremennym.V finally won Yeremeyev. After the germ left the factory.

In 1956, a design project Yeremeyev was embodied in the life-size clay. In 1957, a new car under the name of ZIL-111 was released (in 1956, died IA Likhachev, and the plant was renamed in his honor). In a metal machine was a beautiful, yet rigorous. The front part was like at the same time, "Packard" and "Mercury" 1955-1956 period, while at the same time, comparing favorably to both of them. A much more elegant than the "Packard", and more representative than the "Mercury", he became the personification of the Soviet Union period, thaw. Large glass area and a panoramic windshield missed a lot of light into the cabin. Located on the side molding and sagittal "gill slits" are copied from the "Imperial" in 1956 (on a batch molding ZIL-111 was replaced by a figure known to us gulls). The rear portion was done in the style of "Packard." Large vertical lights, covered wings, reminiscent of the arches of Gothic cathedrals.

In 1958, with some modifications ZIL-111 went into the series. The designs of the ZIL-111 was not just a step forward compared to the ZIS-110, it was a real breakthrough. ZIS-110 was a design in 1941 and ZIL-111 is fully consistent with the requirements of 1955. During this period the automobile world of America has replaced three basic models, and by 1955 in the technological sense of the early machines of the 1940s has disappeared. New ZIL, like its predecessor, remained framed machine, this is probably where the similarities end there. New gasoline V-shaped eight-cylinder engine with a cast iron block and aluminum cylinder heads weighed 350 kg and gave 200 hp (ZIS-110 - 140 hp).

For the first time on a serial domestic car was installed two-speed automatic transmission with push-button control. The car was much lower. Due to the increased width of the bodywork and interior remodeling space in the car became more, respectively, the passengers could accommodate much more comfortable than its predecessor.

In 1959, the series went to changed ZIL-111 with the installation of domestic air-conditioning, called ZIL-111A. Cooled air conditioning and reduced humidity in the cabin when the outdoor temperature exceeds 18 ° C. The engine ZIL-111A also has an index, "111A" - it was connected with the installation of the compressor and some changes in the design of the drive components. Externally, ZIL-111A can be distinguished on the back nepanoramnomu glass, it was done in conjunction with the installation of the sides of the rear window air conditioner.

In 1960 appeared convertible ZIL-111V: big seven-seater had a canvas awning and 4 side lifting windows in chrome frames. The rise of the windows, as well as the rise of the curtain, implementation-lyalsya through a hydraulic drive. Tent, as in chaise ZIS-110B, in the folded position is covered by a decorative leather cover, and additional seating - straponteny - had double back with equal halves. Special gray convertible ZIL-111V changed carriages at parades ZIS-110B. Convertibles "111V" issued three years before putting on stream next modification ZIL-111G.

There is a version that the next change in the appearance of the vehicle was conducted at the request of Khrushchev, who noticed that the car is head of state (ZIL-111) does not differ from machine chairman executive committee (GAZ-13 "The Seagull"). In 1961 he was a prototype car, which is similar in form to the "Cadillac", but for unknown reasons, the series did not go. In the same year the car has undergone yet another facelift, and took its final form. The car went into production in 1962 and was called ZIL-111G. In fact, this is the same, "111A" with air conditioning, but with modified external forms. Starting with the ZIL-111G, air-conditioning became standard equipment and is not designated as a separate model of the plant. Externally, ZIL-111G is not copied any particular car, and was fully established factory designers, albeit with an eye to the American automotive industry trends. At the "111G" was used chetyrehfarnaya lighting system front and rear. And two round rear lights have been borrowed from the ZIL-118, "Youth". The front and rear of the car have been completely changed. The central part is the same, except for the outer door panels, stylized in accordance with other external changes. The sidewall of the machine reappeared sagittal molding that goes from the big corrugated lining behind the rear wheel arches. Uppercase words "one hundred and eleven Zeal" on the rear wing gave way to a laconic "ZIL-111." On the radiator grille has disappeared with bas-relief image of a seagull Yuri Dolgoruky, but instead of a shield, stylized medieval tower with an inscription at the top - "ZIL", and at the bottom - "111" there was a simple inscription "111" with diverging rays. In the back of the emblem in the form of the same shield with radiating been replaced individually mounted letters "W", "U", "L". Due to the changes required a new bumper jack: the old captured the special eyelets in the bumper, the new well was placed under the vehicle frame. Instead of manually screw jack ZIL-111 was designed and built pedal mechanical folding type jack 2E111G jack "Cadillac" of 1961. The same jack, with minor modifications, all future manned cars ZIL.

ZIL-111D appeared in 1964 as a modification of the ZIL-111V with the forms of ZIL-111G. The first automobile ZIL-111D chassis number 82 was collected in July 1964. It was installed upgraded brakes. The awning was a soft top ply fabric stretched over the arches and lateral levels of the framework. Each tent is individually adjustable frame units to ensure trouble-free operation. Fabric awning was attached with nails to the cardboard inserts front bar, rear arches and rear side belt body. To shape and further stretch an awning had padded jackets side. Inside the transverse arch were closed to them suspended upholstery, has a longitudinal rubber bands, which protects the fabric from sagging during raising and lowering the canopy. In the back of the tent was provided a window of a flexible plastic film, which was attached to an awning on three sides with zips. The window could detach and drop down. Tent rose and fell with elektrogidravliche-ray drive. The whole process of raising and lowering the canopy occupied 7-7.5 seconds. To fix the canopy in the raised position had lever locks and latches. Lever locks your brackets to the front awning bar and catch on the corresponding recesses in the bracket is fastened to the top of the wind frame. On rack locks were locking pins, which when lifting the tent included in the special slot in the bracket, fixed to the wind frame. Pins, clips were used to prevent lateral displacement of the tent. When folded tent fit into the slot and the closed cover, which is fastened to the outside of the body with the buttons, and the inside of the pawned between the awning and the rear seat and fasten to the inner sidewalls buttons. To shape the bags under his tent folded stacked lightweight bag, made of porous plastic. In the raised position canopy cover was removed and stacked in a special envelope, and the pillow and contracts evolved a special belt. Pillows and envelope stored in the trunk.

In electrical ZIL-111D match predecessor, ZIL-111V. The differences could be traced, perhaps, only in radio. On ZIL-111, 111G and 111V was a radio-13M, kabrioletny version of which was different from the basic lack of remote control, instead using the volume control the rear speakers. Was different device antennas. On ZIL-111V was two antennas, two telescopic, located on the hind wings. They were nominated by hand, and the reception was possible only if nominated by the antennas, which caused some discomfort. At buggy ZIL-111D designers installed a new radio AR-61-2-A and improved antenna, leaving one with the electric lift telescopic. It was situated in the rear left wing and worked in both the raised and lowered in the state, but with a smaller number of programs adopted and the sound volume.

Cars ZIL-111D was carried out in 1964-1967, respectively. During this period, was made about eight cars. Three of them were used for the parade and had a complete set of additional radio equipment, special handles and a set of flagpoles. Others were used as a government gigs for special trips. Compare convertible ZIL-111D with any foreign counterparts is difficult, because the ZIL was the only plant that as the base car did notchback limousine, sedan and wagon were made based on it. Seven-seater convertible, which is stored in the Club cabriolets and roadsters in Moscow, is made as a whole, that is not longer "stretch" as the wedding in Lincoln, a model for a whole frame of its own configuration. Similarly, a car with a big stretch to be called "Lincoln Continental" 1961 model year. Based on this gig with the swinging doors of specialized bodywork company was established long gig. Unfortunately, this car after the murder of President Kennedy got him notorious, and the release of the model was discontinued. However, here we compare ZIL-111D with a "Lincoln" would be incorrect, as "Lincoln" also "stretch" to the same unit, built by special order.

ZIL-111D, owned by the Club now cabriolets and roadsters, was once presented to the General Secretary of the CPSU Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev, leader Eric Honecker of East Germany - everyone remembers the "political kiss" between the two politicians, who was depicted on the Berlin Wall. It is on this car in 1974, met with Fidel Castro and Brezhnev, who came to East Germany with a visit of friendship, love a fast ride in a convertible with Comrade Honecker. Typically, the ZIL-111D softly and gravely walked in a motorcade escorted by motorcyclists and "thirteen", "Gull". After German unification and the removal from power Honecker some of its cars sold under the hammer. At the international exhibition in Brussels car was awarded the honorary diploma. Subsequent cars: ZIL-114-117 (1967-1976 years)

ZIL-111 all models was unquestionably reliable, stable on the road, with a great resource units, but the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution, he prepared a replacement - a new limousine ZIL-114. Drawn as a ruler, this machine represented the rational plane style of the late 60s. Engine with aluminum cylinder block was lighter and more compact than the ZIL-111, with a working volume increased from 6 to 7 liters, and power - from 200 to 300 liters. with. And the device ZIL-114 was a lot of unusual for the then Soviet vehicles: all-wheel disc brakes, height-adjustable steering column, front suspension besshkvornevaya on torsion bars. Equipment cabin was selected individually to taste this or that leader. In the early 70's at ZIL-114 appeared modification - Five sedan ZIL-117, along with almost the same, "Chaika" GAZ-13. Long ZIL-114 was the basis for universal emergency medical care, and "short" ZIL-117 - for a two-door convertible parade.

A beautifully cared for relic from the 1970/1980's, in XL trim..

The XL added the following over the base model;

height adjustable front seats, a clock, and larger headlights.

Fitted with, I believe, the 1993 cc Pinto OHC I4 engine, which was available between 1976 & 1982, but confusingly, the 1999 cc Cologne V6 engine was also available between 1970 & 1982.

I have no idea which engine is fitted in this example.

The Ford Taunus TC (Taunus Cortina) was a series of cars produced by Ford of Germany, sharing much of its technical basis with the British Ford Cortina Mk3.

This is a modification of my hot rod pickup. It still has everything that you might like (motorized/remotely controlled driving/steering, lights, turn signals, working steering wheel, working V8 and radiator fan, working door handles, gearbox…) and some new features (wheels, suspension, engine, roof, front lights, interior, fuel tank, movable license plate, chrome details…). Like the old one, it is 50 studs long and 28 studs wide but it is heavier - it weighs 1285g.

"The Natimuk Pavilion Classroom was constructed by the Victorian Public Works Department in 1914 as an open air classroom for school children at Natimuk Primary School. It consisted of a rectangular timber structure 20’ x 30’ with a gabled roof.

The room was intended to accommodate 48 children in dual seater desks. Three sides of the classroom are boarded with weatherboards to the height of three feet; above that height, adjustable canvas shutters were fitted right to the roofline. The back wall, on which the blackboard was mounted, was boarded from floor to ceiling. The room was built on sleeper plates for easy removal.

44 of these classrooms were constructed for Victorian schools between 1911 and 1914, but after World War I, the Education Department discontinued their construction. They were unpopular with teachers in winter weather. However they were used for additional accommodation in schools for many years.

Natimuk Primary School moved from Main Street to a site in Jory Street in 1961. The pavilion classroom was relocated by the Education Department to the Australian House Museum at Deakin University in 1988, because it was under threat. The building was returned to Natimuk in 2002 and is now located in the grounds of the present Natimuk Primary School in Jory Street.

Open air classrooms were designed to provide a healthy environment for delicate children, and resulted from the hygiene movement in education at the beginning of the 20th century. It was hoped that improvements in lighting and ventilation aimed at improving the child’s physical conditions would lead to better educational and health outcomes. The open air classroom reflected the preoccupation with the benefits of light and fresh air for the health and education of young children.

Medical opinion of the time favoured fresh air and a bracing environment for all, derived from the ideas behind the open air sanatoriums used for the treatment of tuberculosis patients. The spread of tuberculosis, known as the 'white plague’ was a constant concern, it was responsible for one death in nine in Victoria in 1902, and in 1904 was declared a notifiable disease.

This classroom is architecturally significant, as the only surviving, relatively intact and rare example of an open air classroom."

"... the sheer ease of driving it – at least on public roads – makes it a shockingly fast, massively entertaining road warrior.

This K12 Micra in dark blue, is a 3 door S model and is in great shape and well looked after for a 55 reg.

The S model has the 1.2-litre engine, side airbags, a 60/40 split sliding rear seat, drivers seat height adjustment and CD player.

This one is seen here on Lower Granton Road, Edinburgh.

But he's still not done...

Search GMC on my stream and you'll find the original posting of this. It appeared on eBay back in July 2011 and a friend of mine bought it. It's being gradually brought back to life. It's cleaned up well and looks a lot brighter.

Designed for touring rather than camping, these were purpose built by GMC from 73-78 rather than converted from something else. It uses the Oldsmobile Tornado running gear with FWD to permit a nice low, flat floor, has height adjustable air suspension and aircon. Thanks to a fibreglass and aluminium body, a strong following and good parts supply, out of the nearly 13000 that were made, 8-9000 survive, an incredible number really.

The Suzuki Bandit is a series of standard motorcycles produced by Suzuki since 1989. The Bandit series includes the following models:

GSX150, 147 cc liquid-cooled (2018–present)

GSF250, 248 cc liquid-cooled (1989–2000)

GSF400, 398 cc liquid-cooled (1989–1997)

GSF600, 599 cc SACS (1995–2004)

GSF1200, 1,157 cc SACS (1996–2007)

GSF1250, 1,255 cc liquid-cooled (2007–2016)

The Bandit 1200 was generally released in January 1996, but a few were registered in 1995. It is powered by a re-tuned and higher capacity version of the GSX-R1100 engine. Specification includes fuel gauge, higher specification suspension, hydraulically operated clutch, larger diameter front brake discs, and 5-speed gearbox as opposed to the 6-speed gearbox of the 600 Bandit. In 1997 a version with anti-locking braking was introduced.

The 1200 was updated for 2001 with New rear bodywork.

Fully electronic instrumentation.

New carburettors.

Suzuki PAIR (Pulsed Air Injection), feeding clean air into the exhaust outlet to help eliminate unburnt fuel from emissions.

Additional fuel filter.

Tokico brake callipers (six pistons at the front).

20 litre fuel tank (up from 19).

Improvements to frame and steering geometry.

Seat lowered.

S model: New modern styled fairing, with twin headlights.

In 2006 there was a revamp, with a new shape tank, side panels, a height adjustable seat and a longer hexagonal-section swinging arm. The faired S version also have a new shape fairing and mirrors along with a totally redesigned headlight system with over and under beams rather than the previous side by side system.. These new models were offered with ABS brakes as an option. ABS brakes were fitted as standard on the UK specification SA model. Some markets also received height-adjustable handlebars.

After an eighteen year developement the DS was unveiled at the 1955 Paris Motorshow, styled by Italian sculptor and industrial designer Flaminio Bertoni it had an aerodynamic body design and innovative technology, including hydro pneumatic self levelling suspension. Initially deemed expensive the DS was joined by a cheaper less technical ID model in 1957. The DS was third in the 1999 Car of the Century and during it's twenty year production sold nearly 1.5 million.

In 1962 the DS received a more streamlined nose to increase the aerodynamic efficiency, still retaining the the round head lights.

In 1967 a second restyle brought in the streamlined covered lights on this example. The design had a pair of lights under each cover, the inner set swivelled with the steering wheel to allow drivers to see hazards on turns, this was not allowed in the USA at the time so a version with four exposed fixed head lamps was made for the US market.

In 1965 a luxury upgrade, the DS Pallas (after Greek goddess Pallas), was introduced. This included comfort features such as better noise insulation, a more luxurious (and optional leather) upholstery and external trim embellishments. From 1966 the Pallas model received a driver's seat with height adjustment

The DS was successful in motorsports like rallying, where sustained speeds on poor surfaces are paramount, winning the 1959 Monte Carlo Rally, the 1962 1000 Lakes (Finland) where Pauli Toivonen drove a DS19 to victory. A DS was awarded victory in the 1966 Monte Carlo Rally after being soundly beaten by the competitive BMC Mini-Cooper team who were disqualified over a technicality with their lights. Robert Neyret won the Rallye du Maroc in 1969 and 1970 in a DS 21 A DS also won the 1974 London-Sahara-Munich World Cup Rally,

I finished off building this modular table trolley today (with some help from Teunis - thanks mate). It has the following features:

- Height-adjustable rails (adjustable in 32 mm/4 stud increments). The modular tables slide along these rails into the trolley like drawers (the lowest table rests on the base). The height of the ledges can be adjusted to make the trolley hold more or less tables, to accommodate the height of the LEGO built on them. It's designed to carry a normal load of 4-6 tables. An extra table can be stacked on top.

- High-quality castors make it easy to move around, and to wheel into the trailer. Two locking castors hold it in place when required.

- The trolley makes folding up table legs easy. Just slide a table with its legs down into the empty trolley, fold the legs up, and slide it out.

VIDEO: youtu.be/jR0rCEck7_0

Characteristics:

-Leaf spring suspension with height-adjustable rear

-License plate with simple mechanism to hide it (manual)

-Lights (front and rear) manually controlled with a lever connected to a speed dial of 8878 battery (which allows you to switch between low and high beam)

-Turn signals (front and rear) connected to a servo motor via coupled PF switches (2 switches)

-Working steering wheel

-Manual gearbox – 4 gears (5:1, 3:1, 5:3, 1:1)

-Suicide doors with working door handles

-It is powered by two L motors and 7.4 V (8878) rechargeable battery box.

-Servo motor for steering

-Working V8 fake engine with some details to make it resemble real V8 engine, connected directly to the driving motors so it works at the same speed no matter what gear you choose (in neutral also)

-Working radiator fan, connected directly to a V8 engine

-Rear doors can be opened.

-Roof window, fire extinguisher, fuel tank…

-Front tires from 8070 supercar, and rear from 42000 Grand Prix Racer.

I hope you like it, feel free to comment…

A friend's new car, a complete obscurity with that fantastic saloon shaped hatchback.

Daihatsu Applause: 9 taxed, 11 SORN (This example being the only GXI taxed unsurprisingly) in the UK.

www.howmanyleft.co.uk/family/daihatsu_applause

Being such an incredibly rare car I'm surprised that I've managed to see my second Applause in the metal!

High points: A real strange thing to drive, firstly it's quick. So unassuming from the exterior yet the 1.6 engine really makes it fly - this Applause loves buzzing at 4,000 rpm upwards! As a passenger the thoroughly grey interior is super cushy, as if the seats had been taken from something more expensive and the 'piano key' controls are most amusing.

Low points: The bizzare driving position, sitting high up and forward combined with a low dashboard - something of a Japanese car trait? It gave the feeling of sitting on the end of the bonnet whilst driving - quite a novelty so perhaps not really a bad thing. The rear passenger headrests were complete comedy gold, both barely larger than a top-end smart phone and offering one inch of height adjustment!

Background

The Splinter supercar started as a graduate school project at North Carolina State University. Fueled by a lifelong desire to design and build his own car and inspired by the all-wood construction of the deHavilland Mosquito, Joe Harmon spent roughly 5 years working on the Splinter with the help of many others. The goal was to use wood in the construction of the car in every possible application, with hopes that the challenges associated with the task would lead to new ideas and new perceptions of wood.

The Citroen CX ran from (1974-91) designed by Robert Opron to replace the DS the car was an instant success in Europe with 132,000 sales in 1978 after being voted European Car of the Year 1975. Combining of Citroen's self levelling suspension and speed adjustable power steering and a unique interior design that did away with steering column stalks

The arrival of the CX. coincided with Citroen's 1974 bankruptcy and the merger with Peugeot effectively meaning the new PSA conglomerate had three cars competing in the executive car market the CX the Peugeot 604 and Talbot Tagora and also to compete for scarce developement resources. Citroen were also unable to market the CX in the US due to legislation opposing certain design features, like mineral oil brake fluid, aerodynamic head lights, and height adjustable suspension. But the final nail in the coffin for US sales was the prohibition of height adjustable suspension in 1974.

The launch of the CX25 GTi Turbo in 1985 finally gave the CX a model that could fully exploit the capabilities of its chassis, with a top speed of just over 137mph.

The model also recieved a minor update in 1985 but did little to halt the declining sales figures though a replacement was nowhere near. Finally the CX was replaced by the SM which was based on the Peugeot 605 chassis.

The Series 1 vehicles (1974–85) were characterised by stainless steel front and rear bumpers, hydropneumatic suspension as compliant and soft as the DS, a "spaceship" style dashboard featuring a revolving drum speedometer and similar tachometer. A similar version of the revolving drum speedometer was used earlier in the 1958 Edsel for only one year.

In 1985 the range was refreshed with the Series 2 The Series 2 vehicles (1985–91) can be distinguished by the use of plastic bumpers. The cars lost some of their earlier distinctiveness, but maintained the "stalk-free" layout, where turn signals, wiper controls, horn and headlights could be operated by the driver's fingertips while his/her hands remained on the steering wheel. The suspension became stiffer in most models, with arguably a more aggressive look, as opposed to the more elegant Series 1 design. Although the dashboard retained the "pod" housing for the instrumentation, it lost the revolving-drum instruments and received a sloping centre dash area, and the radio moved to a position sideways and between the front seats, with the height corrector and heating controls moving to the centre console.

A new Innovation Hub at Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) has provided the Haldane Martin interior design studio with a unique challenge.

Internationally renowned for the world’s first human heart transplant in 1967, GSH has a legacy for innovation. However, to continue to hold weight the hospital needs to carry this reputation into the 21st century. GSH staff believe it is their responsibility to radically transform the system in order to continually improve healthcare and to continue to innovate on an internationally recognisable level.

A partnership between Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH), the Bertha Centre for Social Innovation & Entrepreneurship at UCT Graduate School of Business and the UCT Faculty of Health Sciences gave birth to the idea of an Innovation Hub. As part of a broader programme to enable hospital staff to make a difference through innovation, it was established to drive and support new solutions in service delivery.

The Innovation Hub was thus conceived of as a participatory space that would facilitate this, encouraging innovative ideas to become tangible solutions to improve patient care. The Hub has since been donated to the Western Cape Provincial Department of Health.

This project immediately presented some interesting design challenges. The existing facility was a generic office space and a UCT computer room in the hospitals 1984 extension. The hospital management required that minimal structural changes be made to the building shell, and that the existing office carpeting, ceiling and lighting be retained.

The space would also need to speak to its context of a public African hospital. A tight budget would inform this. The concept would need to have potential for scaling and be able to be rolled out throughout Africa. It should not be too corporate or opulent and particularly not institutional to contrast the mindset of typical government bureaucracy. The design would need to account for potential future reuse or decommission.

The Innovation Hub needs to fit six or more groups of three to six people at one time. The areas required range from practical spaces for brainstorming, workshopping and collaborative work to places to break away and do quiet, solo work. Both formal spaces for presentations and seminars are necessary as well as informal spaces for social engagement between innovation teams.

The space needs to inspire action and break the mould of a “think tank” where most work is mental and often amounts to not much more than hot air.

The Haldane Martin design team developed a concept that fulfils all these requirements. Based around a maker’s workshop to premise action and constructive work, the environment inspires staff to mentally put on hard hats and big boots, roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty. The colour scheme uses green, typically associated with healthcare, but on steroids as a dayglo shade that is energetic and contemporary. A chevron motif sparks the idea of work in progress. Pallets and packing crates form the basis for furniture. The use of raw, unfinished pine makes both a cost-effective material and one that reinforces the concept of a workshop.

Practical and functional furnishings include whiteboards for jotting down ideas and table surfaces with writable tops to encourage brainstorming. Tables and chairs are height-adjustable to be used either sitting or in the trend of standing and working, and fitted onto castors to make them easy to move around into flexible arrangements. High round meeting desks further encourage interaction. A boardroom table facilitates meetings with a paper roll mounted on one end to allow a flow of ideas to be recorded onto the paper as it is pulled across the glass table surface. A crate couch and desk setup was created for solo work. Workshop tables enable group work.

Final elements include exposed mechanical threads one would find in a workshop. Proactive quotes are stencilled onto surfaces to motivate and energise hospital staff, giving the space an upbeat character that feels modern, fresh and edgy while retaining the rawness of the design concept.

The final Innovation Hub is a transformation into an innovative and contemporary working environment fit to host the creative and intellectual capital of healthcare workers on the frontline of an essential service in critical need of a redesign. Charged with reimagining the healthcare system, these passionate individuals now have a workspace that will service their ideas and innovations so that they can in turn better service the public.

The Citroën 2CV (French: “deux chevaux” i.e. “deux chevaux-vapeur [fiscaux]”, literally “two tax horsepower”) was an economy car produced by the French car manufacturer Citroën between 1948 and 1990. It was technologically advanced and innovative, but with uncompromisingly utilitarian unconventional looks, and deceptively simple Bauhaus inspired bodywork, that belied the sheer quality of its underlying engineering. It was designed to move the French peasantry on from horses and carts. It is considered one of Citroën's most iconic cars. In 1953 Autocar in a technical review of the car wrote of "the extraordinary ingenuity of this design, which is undoubtedly the most original since the Model T Ford". It was described by CAR magazine journalist and author LJK Setright as "the most intelligent application of minimalism ever to succeed as a car". It was designed for low cost, simplicity of use, versatility, reliability, and off-road driving. For this it had a light, easily serviceable engine, extremely soft long travel suspension (with height adjustment by lengthening/shortening of tie rods ) , high ground clearance, and for oversized loads a car-wide canvas sunroof (which until 1955) also covered the boot).

During a production run of 42 years between 1948 and 1990, 3,872,583 2CVs were produced, plus 1,246,306 Fourgonnettes (small 2CV delivery vans), as well as spawning mechanically identical vehicles including the Ami – 1,840,396; the Dyane – 1,444,583; the Acadiane – 253,393; and the Mehari – 144,953, a grand total of 8,756,688, of which there are still 3,417 on the road in the UK as of June 2011.

From 1988 onwards, production took place in Portugal rather than in France. This arrangement lasted for two years until 2CV production halted. Portuguese built cars, especially those from when production was winding down, have a reputation in the UK for being much less well made and more prone to corrosion than those made in France. Paradoxically the Portuguese plant was more up-to-date than the one in Levallois, and Portuguese 2CV manufacturing was to higher quality standards.
