Lada Riva 1600ES (1977-84) Engine 1570cc S4 OC

Based on the Fiat 124 and virtually identical to the first-generation VAZ-2101 model, featuring the Fiat-derived manual transmissions, coil spring suspension all round and aluminum drum brakes on the rear wheels.

The Riva name was adapted from 1981 with trim changes though the car beneath the skin remained essentially Fiat 124 apart from lengthening of the engine stroke to increase capacity, The old OHC-engine had its valves actuated by chain, while the new one was modified to having a toothed belt-drive. The car sold in various stages of production as 1198c, 1294cc, 1452cc and 1570cc.

Another change was made to the engine in 1992, when single point fuel injection and catalytic converters were specified in an attempt to keep up with emissions legislation. In a review of the new economy car, the British automobile magazine Autocar noted its low price of only £3,158 (£10,736.82 in 2020), improved road performance and an "impressive list of standard equipment", which included "height-adjustable headlamps, internally adjustable driver's door mirror, velour-covered seats, heated rear window, illumination lights for bonnet and boot", and a 21-piece toolkit

The 1500 and 1600 versions of the Lada were introduced in 1977 with longer stroke versions of the 1200 and 1300cc engines to the same basic style, but with four headlamps on the Saloons

The Lada was removed from Westerm European sales in 1997, but continued

at the AvtoVAZ factory in the Russian Federation and was sold as the Lada Classic. Ceasing production in 2012 in Russia, though production continues in Egypt.

This car has been restored to stunning condition by its owner (the gent standing by the car) with detailing included colour coded seats

I could have easily named this shot 'brazen stiletto' because these daring red stilettos are become more so each day!

I've had this idea for some time, but haven't had access to a traditional "Hills Hoist" until holidaying down the coast recently.

This Hills hoist was at the back of someones property, which was without fences, but you still have to cross their boundry (only just), to get near it. Lucky for the stilettos and I, there is a fire break at the rear of all of the properties where we stay, so you can easily stroll along between the houses and the nearby bushland.

I'm not sure if this is a holiday property or not but every time I even thought about 'going for it' so to speak there was a car in the drive way, until early one morning when the red stilettos and I were out . . . the sun was coming up, the blinds were drawn, there was no car in the driveway and there appeared to be no one about and so we made a dash for it and took a very quick series of snaps and I do mean very quick . . . all the while the adrenaline was racing!

My Australian Flickr friends will be very familiar with this Aussie icon but for those of you who aren't, here's a little background info . . .

A Hills Hoist is a height-adjustable rotary clothes line, manufactured in Adelaide, South Australia by Lance Hill since 1945. The Hills Hoist and similar rotary clothes hoists remain a common fixture in many backyards in Australia and New Zealand. They are considered one of Australia's most recognisable icons, and are used frequently by artists as a metaphor for Australian suburbia in the 1950s and 1960s. Although originally a product name, the term "Hills Hoist" became synonymous with rotary clothes hoists in general, throughout Australia.

Often benches are simply named for the place they are used, regardless of whether this implies a specific design.

Park benches are set as seating places within public parks, and vary in the number of people they can seat.

Garden benches are similar to public park benches, but are longer and offer more sitting places.

Picnic tables, or catering buffet tables have long benches as well as a table. These tables may have table legs which are collapsible, in order to expedite transport and storage.

Scenic benches are situated to provide a comfortable means of enjoying the contemplation of a beautiful landscape, a busy street scene, or perhaps a specific event.

Perch benches are usually situated in high traffic areas to enable people to take a quick break.

A storage bench is a combination of sitting space and a storage box, often used for keeping gardening supplies or grill equipment.

Långa Soffan, a 240-foot (73 m) park bench in Oskarshamn, Sweden

Various types of benches are specifically designed for and/or named after specific uses, such as:

church pews inside places of worship are equipped with an additional kneeling bench.

a bench seat is a traditional seat installed in automobiles, featuring a continuous pad running the full width of the cabin.

a punishment bench is used to have a punishee lie (and often be tied) down on for the administration of a corporal punishment, after which it may be specifically named, e.g. caning bench

a bench (weight training) is used for fitness exercises, such as the bench press which is named after its use of a bench

a communion bench is not used as a seat

a piano bench offers usually one person seating and is height adjustable.

a spanking bench, such as a caning bench, is specifically designed for a spankee to lie upon, possibly strapped down, while submitting to paining of the posterior

swing seats are independently movable, suspended benches, used for play or as a relaxing porch swing.

a courting bench (or kissing bench, or tête-à-tête): a two-seater with the seats pointing in opposite directions, thus almost facing each other.

a friendship bench in a school playground is where a child can go when they want someone to talk to.

the bench in a courtroom, behind which the judge is seated.

For the Macro Monday theme "Lit by candlelight" (December 2nd 2013)

one of a group of 4 fighting monk figurines I've collected over the years. The torso here is about 3" high - the full model I used is in the first comment slot. Shot with the Sony NEX-6 using the E30mm F3.5 macro lens

A truly challenging challenge! I'm a complete newcomer to shooting by candlelight. I think I've probably made every mistake possible. The closer I get the less effective the candle light is. The closer I place the candles, the hotter and closer to melting or damaging things I get! Candles are also not height-adjustable - so the subject has to be elevated or lowered - all I can do is move the candles closer or further away!

I have used up to 8 candles of varying height. The shots are all pretty well SOOC - Photoshop has only been used to crop a shot, to resize (the uploader won't take my full size photos ever since the 'new improved' Flickr) and to add a signature. No post processing at all ;o)

After an eighteen year developement the DS was unveiled at the 1955 Paris Motorshow, styled by Italian sculptor and industrial designer Flaminio Bertoni it had an aerodynamic body design and innovative technology, including hydro pneumatic self levelling suspension. Initially deemed expensive the DS was joined by a cheaper less technical ID model in 1957. The DS was third in the 1999 Car of the Century and during it's twenty year production sold nearly 1.5 million.

In 1962 the DS received a more streamlined nose to increase the aerodynamic efficiency, still retaining the the round head lights.

In 1967 a second restyle brought in the streamlined covered lights on this example. The design had a pair of lights under each cover, the inner set swivelled with the steering wheel to allow drivers to see hazards on turns, this was not allowed in the USA at the time so a version with four exposed fixed head lamps was made for the US market.

In 1965 a luxury upgrade, the DS Pallas (after Greek goddess Pallas), was introduced. This included comfort features such as better noise insulation, a more luxurious (and optional leather) upholstery and external trim embellishments. From 1966 the Pallas model received a driver's seat with height adjustment.

-Advanced Gunsight Magnification system: This compact scope uses two precisely crafted lenses and two holographic projectors. It is completely adjustable for all magnifications between x2 and x20, with customizable reticule and HUD options. The polymer guards along the top protect it from debris and add some camouflage. The AGMS is fully compatible with all picatinny-type rails.

-Coil-assist system: The weapon is fitted with 8 electromagnetic coils, which toggle on and off in a linear pulse as the round is fired. They accelerate the ionized gasses behind the round and redirect all of the force to propel the bullet. This can be explained as pushing the round out of the barrel as well as pulling.

While the vehicle is still in the trial phase with both European and North American forces, the versatile polecat platform is continuously being marketed. While the basic variant does fill in the role of an armored HMMWV very well, the chassis served as a basis for other vehicles, like the new Zeus Fennek and is so versatile that multiple variants are being offered. Seen here is the Polecat Special Forces GMV, as well as a heavily armored variant for high-risk environments.

I played around with the design some more and while going through my reference folder I cam across the Bae Valanx contender for the JLTV, which directly inspired the Heavy Duty Polecat. Now if only I could figure out a way to make the chassis height adjustable like on the real thing...

Yes, your handlebar bag can be well-supported without limiting your handlebar height adjustment. This is also ideal for larger bikes or when using a smaller bag where the height of the bag is well below handlebar level. Arms articulate to allow the bag to sit level on your rack without having to bend into place like some other designs. Available for 1" or 1-1/8" steer tubes with self-locking headset spacer. Hand brazed and chrome plated. Available in 90mm, 120mm, and 150mm lengths. Made in Chico, CA.

Considered one of Australia's most recognisable icons, the Hills Hoist is a height-adjustable rotary clothes line, designed for hanging wet clothes for wind drying by rotation. The Hills Hoist has been manufactured in Adelaide, South Australia by Lance Hill since 1945. The Hills Hoist and similar rotary clothes hoists remain a common fixture in many backyards in Australia and New Zealand.

Daihatsu Applause: 9 taxed, 11 SORN (This example being the only GXI taxed unsurprisingly) in the UK.

www.howmanyleft.co.uk/family/daihatsu_applause

Being such an incredibly rare car I'm surprised that I've managed to see my second Applause in the metal!

High points: A real strange thing to drive, firstly it's quick. So unassuming from the exterior yet the 1.6 engine really makes it fly - this Applause loves buzzing at 4,000 rpm upwards! As a passenger the thoroughly grey interior is super cushy, as if the seats had been taken from something more expensive and the 'piano key' controls are most amusing.

Low points: The bizzare driving position, sitting high up and forward combined with a low dashboard - something of a Japanese car trait? It gave the feeling of sitting on the end of the bonnet whilst driving - quite a novelty so perhaps not really a bad thing. The rear passenger headrests were complete comedy gold, both barely larger than a top-end smart phone and offering one inch of height adjustment!

I finished off building this modular table trolley today (with some help from Teunis - thanks mate). It has the following features:

- Height-adjustable rails (adjustable in 32 mm/4 stud increments). The modular tables slide along these rails into the trolley like drawers (the lowest table rests on the base). The height of the ledges can be adjusted to make the trolley hold more or less tables, to accommodate the height of the LEGO built on them. It's designed to carry a normal load of 4-6 tables. An extra table can be stacked on top.

- High-quality castors make it easy to move around, and to wheel into the trailer. Two locking castors hold it in place when required.

- The trolley makes folding up table legs easy. Just slide a table with its legs down into the empty trolley, fold the legs up, and slide it out.

"The Citroën 2CV (French: "deux chevaux" i.e. "deux chevaux-vapeur" (lit. 'steam horses'), "two tax horsepower") was an economy car produced by the French car manufacturer Citroën between 1948 and 1990. It was technologically advanced and innovative, but with uncompromisingly utilitarian unconventional looks, and deceptively simple Bauhaus and Junkers early all metal aircraft inspired bodywork (corrugated for added strength without added weight), that belied the sheer quality of its underlying engineering. It was designed to motorise the large number of small-holder farmers in 1930s France, who were still using horses and carts. It is considered one of Citroën's most iconic cars. In 1953 Autocar in a technical review of the car wrote of "the extraordinary ingenuity of this design, which is undoubtedly the most original since the Model T Ford". It was described by Car Magazine journalist and author L. J. K. Setright as "the most intelligent application of minimalism ever to succeed as a car". It was designed for low cost, simplicity of use and maintenance, versatility, reliability, low fuel consumption and off-road driving. For this it had a light, easily serviceable engine, extremely soft long travel suspension (with height adjustment by lengthening/shortening of tie rods) high ground clearance, and for oversized loads a car-wide canvas sunroof, which (until 1955) also covered the boot.

During a production run of 42 years between 1948 and 1990, 3,872,583 2CVs were produced, plus 1,246,306 Fourgonnettes (small 2CV delivery vans), as well as spawning mechanically identical vehicles including the Ami: 1,840,396; the Dyane: 1,444,583; the Acadiane: 253,393; and the Mehari: 144,953, a grand total of 8,756,688, of which there are still 3,382 on the road in the UK as of January 2013.

From 1988 onwards, production took place in Portugal (Mangualde) rather than in France. This arrangement lasted for two years until 2CV production halted. Portuguese built cars, especially those from when production was winding down, have a reputation in the UK for being much less well made and more prone to corrosion than those made in France. Paradoxically the Portuguese plant was more up-to-date than the one in Levallois near Paris, and Portuguese 2CV manufacturing was to higher quality standards"

The first fan car ever built was the 1970 C2J. On the chassis' sides bottom edges there were ground-sealing articulated skirts, a technology that would later appear in the 1978 BT46B. At the rear of the C2J were housed 2 MBT engine fans driven by a single 2S2C engine. The C2J had a Lexan skirt extending to the ground on both sides, laterally on the back and from just aft of the front wheels; it was integrated with the suspension system so the skirt bottom would maintain a distance of 1" from the ground regardless of g-forces or anomalies in the road surface, thereby providing a zone within which the fans could create a partial vacuum which would provide 1.25–1.5g₀ of downforce on the fully loaded car, creating the same levels of low pressure under the car at all speeds and giving the "sucker car" much greater grip and maneuverability. Similarly, the conveyed air under the floor of the ⚡2014 AWID+S æ-car is drawn out by the fan at the rear end, generating an extremely effective downforce regardless of the vehicle's current speed and preventing any undesirable porpoising. Since this car relies mainly on such downforce for cornering, aerodynamics can be more streamlined, reducing the downforce needed from Venturi effect. As a result the drag forces are greatly reduced, raising the top speed considerably and offering a driving behaviour that is less affected by current speed. The difference in the way downforce is generated between conventional Venturi cars and fan cars is influenced by the difference in the speed variations when the downforce is applied on each of these cars: they are similar in high speed corners, but in chicanes and low speed corners, fan cars are significantly faster. The ⚡2014 adopts the fully adjustable Rimac AWTVS, controlling the torque received by each wheel 100×s for maximum cornering performance as well as optimum acceleration and braking on all road conditions. This car is capable of sustaining prolonged +9g maneuvers, thus it is recommended to wear a g-suit in order to prevent g-LOC.

NOTES

Pₘₐₓ = Fₓ vₘₐₓ = 2⁻¹ Cₓ A ρ vₘₐₓ³vₘₐₓ = ∛(2Pₘₐₓ Cₓ⁻¹ A⁻¹ ρ⁻¹)793.8 km/h (v, speed in m/s; P, power; Fₓ, drag; Cₓ, drag coefficient; A, frontal area ≅ 1.5 m²; ρ, air density ≅ 1.225 Kg/m³). Actual performance would depend on various factors, including aerodynamics, traction, and mechanical limitations. In this simplified model, v primarily depends on P and Cₓ rather than on M, and vₘₐₓ remains the same even with a slightly higher OAM.

The Ferrari 296 GTS, the evolution of Ferrari’s mid-rear-engined two-seater berlinetta spider concept, is powered by the new 120° V6 engine coupled with a plug-in (PHEV) electric motor that debuted on the 296 GTB.

Power lives and breathes at the rear of the car, with the combined V6 turbo and electric output delivering 830cv to the rear wheels, sending the car from 0 -100 km/h in 2.9s, reaching 200 km/h in 7.6s and onwards to a top speed of 330 km/h. And in pure electric mode the car can reach 135 km/h before the V6 kicks in.

Lighter than a conventional soft top, and extremely compact, Ferrari’s extensive experience with RHTs means they can sculpt surfaces that work in tandem with the car’s lines, guaranteeing the effect of a truly convertible coupé. The folding roof splits into two sections that fold flush over the front of the engine. This has allowed the designers to introduce a window in the rear section of the engine cover through which the new V6 is clearly visible. When the top is retracted, the cabin and the rear deck are separated by a height-adjustable glass rear screen which guarantees cabin comfort, even at exhilarating speeds.

The RHT can be deployed in just 14 seconds at speeds of up to 45 km/h, but even with the roof up, Ferrari’s patented exhaust resonator system (otherwise known as the Hot Tube and positioned just before the exhaust system) channels the engine’s pure sound directly up into the cabin. With the roof down the harmonics from the single tailpipe exhaust are even more dramatic.

Every Prancing Horse is rooted in 75 years of racing innovation, and there are elements throughout the 296 GTS. The Assetto Fiorano package exploits the car's extreme power and performance thanks to significant weight reduction and aero content, while the special livery is inspired 1963 250 LM, a perfect marriage of simplicity and functionality.

"... the sheer ease of driving it – at least on public roads – makes it a shockingly fast, massively entertaining road warrior. Of all the AMG beasts I've sampled – and there have been many – this has to be the most exciting." - Richard Bremner, Autocar.

Offered here is one of the most exclusive and sought-after limited-edition Mercedes-Benz models of recent years: the CLK DTM AMG Coupé, only 100 examples of which were produced. Developed by Mercedes-Benz's official performance division, AMG, the DTM took its name from the eponymous German touring car race series - the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters - and was built on the platform of the '2nd Generation' C209 CLK (Coupé Leicht Kurz - Coupé Light Short) that had been introduced in 2002. But whereas the DTM competition cars were limited by the regulations to a normally aspirated 4.0-litre V8 engine producing less than 500bhp, AMG's road version came with a supercharged 5.4-litre unit pumping out some 582 horsepower, making it the most powerful in the CLK range. The five-speed semi-automatic transmission is controlled by the 'supercar standard' shift paddles ahead of the steering wheel. Height-adjustable spring/shock absorber units are fitted all round and the suspension bushes are stiffer, while the DTM's redesigned rear suspension owes little to that of the stock CLK. There are also bigger and stronger AMG composite brakes. A bespoke Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) helps keep everything under control, aided by a mechanical limited-slip differential. Weighing 1,742kg, the CLK DTM AMG races to 100km/h in a trifling 3.9 seconds and runs into the rev limiter at 320km/h.

The car's aggressive styling was modelled on the racing version used by AMG works driver Bernd Schneider to win the 2003 DTM championship. Its deep front apron, large air intake ducts, prominently flared wheelarches, boot-mounted rear wing and large-diameter (19" front/20" rear) alloy wheels are all elements developed from the DTM cars. Like its racing counterpart, the road car makes liberal use of carbon fibre for its body panels, while the interior is unmistakably that of a competition car, albeit one trimmed and equipped to Mercedes-Benz's highest standards. Carbon fibre is also used for much of the interior fittings including the lightweight leather/Alcantara trimmed bucket seats, while the rim of the AMG sports steering wheel is covered in high-grip buckskin. There are no rears seats in the CLK DTM AMG, which is strictly a two-seater. The instrumentation consists of a digital rev counter, white-faced speedometer, and oil and water temperature gauges, while the CLK's COMAND infotainment system is retained. An aluminium plinth on the centre console surrounding the 'PRND' gear selector is engraved 'CLK DTM One out of 100', and there are 'AMG' logos to the door kick-plates.

Despite an asking price of over €240,000, all 100 cars sold out immediately. High-profile owners included Formula 1 drivers Jenson Button and Takuma Sato. A limited-edition run of 80 cabriolets followed.

This Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG Coupé was delivered new to Japan and has been imported into the European continent via Switzerland.

My homemade beauty dish, which I cobbled together out of a stainless steel mixing bowl, a translucent plastic bowl, a mirror and assorted bits of perspex, wood and nuts and bolts. The mirror is double-sided, which is why you can see a reflection in it here. It's not the wrong way round! I was vaguely following the idea given here: www.diyphotography.net/studio-lighting-flash-mounted-home...

Total cost about £6.

The dish isn't terribly efficient, but it does give lovely light. It's triggered by eBay remote. I meant to make the height adjustable so it could be triggered by other means, or be fitted to other flashguns, and didn't rely on the precise dimensions of the remote for structural integrity. But frankly, the perspex is too flimsy for my liking so I'll find a metal bracket it can all be mounted onto, and I'll make it adjustable then.

By the way: this pic made it to number 227 for Flickr interestingness, my first ever ranking! Thanks everyone for looking! [Up to 93 on 8 July!]

Cayenne Turbo

The 1st generation Cayenne Turbo had 450 horsepower (340 kW), and accelerated from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 5.3 seconds. A Turbo S version was built in 2006 to compete with the Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG. The Cayenne Turbo S included a low-range case, a locking differential, and the height-adjustable, off-road suspension also standard on the regular Turbo model. It was powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.5-liter V8 that produced 520 bhp (390 kW) and 700 N·m (520 lb·ft) of torque. Acceleration from 0–60 mph (96 km/h) was 5.0 seconds and the top speed was 171 miles per hour. It featured a 6-speed automatic Tiptronic transmission.

A new Turbo was revealed at the 2008 Beijing auto show. It received 50 hp (37 kW) more power, and now accelerated from 0–60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.9 seconds. Also revealed with the new Turbo was a new 550 horsepower (410 kW) Turbo S. Acceleration from 0–60 mph is 4.7 seconds and has optional ceramic composite brakes.

The Delta was first shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1979 as a five-door hatchback, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Ital Design and released in 1979. Between 1980 and 1982, it was also sold in Sweden by Saab-Lancia 600 Its platform put together MacPherson suspension developed for the Beta with four-cylinder, SOHC engines derived from the Fiat Ritmo. The Fiat engines were revised by Lancia engineers with a Weber twin-choke carburettor, a new inlet manifold, exhaust system and ignition. the car also featured fully independent suspension, rack and pinion steering, available air conditioning, optional split-folding rear seat, height-adjustable steering wheel, and defogger Its three-piece body-coloured bumpers made from polyester resin sheet moulding compound were claimed by Lancia to be a first in the industry. The heating and ventilation were developed with help from Saab,

At launch three models were offered: the base Delta 1300 4-speed, with a 1,301 cc 75 PS a Delta 1300 five speed which added more features and an overdrive fifth gear for cruising, and Delta 1500, with a 1,498 cc 85 PS engine and a 5-speed gearbox.

The Delta was given a facelift in November 1982 bumpers were changed from three-piece sheet moulded compound to one-piece thermoplastic polymer, the front with a more prominent lower spoiler; and a body coloured spoiler added to the rear of the roof.

Concurrently the Delta GT 1600 was launched as the models first sporting variant., powered by a 1585 cc, 105 PS DOHC engine with Marelli Digiplex ignition; lower profile tyres, retuned suspensions and all round disc brakes.some optionals like air conditioning were exclusive to the GT; the cabin was upholstered in Zegna cloth. Outside details like a "GT" badge on the right side of the grille, matte black door handles and window trim distinguished it from other Deltas

A double classic! First because this European Citroën CX Pallas D has never been officially exported to the USA and secondly because this Citroën is more than 30 years old. The driver was obviously used to the attention and greeted me warmly. And I found out this specific car is on the Wikipedia photo page to illustrate the fact that this car is very special in the USA.

Citroën CX

The Citroën CX is an automobile produced by the French automaker Citroën from 1974 to 1991. Citroën sold nearly 1.2 million CXs during its 16 years of production. The CX was voted European Car of the Year in 1975. The name CX is the French equivalent abbreviation of Cd for drag coefficient in English, drawing attention to the car's aerodynamic styling, which was uncommon in 1974.

It is considered by some enthusiasts as the last "real Citroën" before Peugeot took control of the company in 1976.

Available models were a four-door fastback, a station wagon (break, or estate car), and a long-wheelbase model built on the break chassis. The CX employed Citroën's unique hydropneumatic self-leveling suspension system.

The CX was never sold in North American markets by PSA Peugeot Citroën, but Americans were still able to obtain the car by other means.

In 1974, the final nail in the coffin of Citroën selling autos in North America was delivered—the decision by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to prohibit passenger vehicles with height-adjustable suspension. Citroën actually built 1974-model-year cars for the U.S., but was barred from selling them. For many years, Citroën had been running into issues where U.S. design legislation fixed older technologies in place, and prohibited certain engineering innovations "not invented here", including items in many automobile designs today, like mineral oil brake fluid, aerodynamic headlights, and directional headlights. The wisdom of these regulations has since been reconsidered and most have been repealed in the light of developing technology.

Since the height-adjustable suspension was an integral feature of the CX design, there was no way to engineer around it. Even financially powerful Mercedes-Benz had to remove the height adjustment switch from its flagship 6.9 while retaining the hydropneumatic suspension in the U.S.

A few CXs came to North America under unclear circumstances (some related to diplomatic immunity) during the 1970s, but the situation was eased when U.S. Government repealed the ban on height-adjustable suspension in 1981. As with any other grey market car, the CX could be imported and brought into compliance with the unique design regulations applied by the U.S.

In addition to personal imports, several companies began converting and selling CXs to Americans. These were not "grey market" cars, but officially imported vehicles remanufactured and type approved for the U.S. The importing companies suffered legal harassment from PSA Peugeot Citroën, but despite this, and with no advertising and only a minimal service network, the powerful cult brand of Citroën still managed to sell about 1,000 cars at approximately double the price of the same vehicle imported conventionally.

Today the U.S. Government exempts cars older than 25 years from all design legislation, so most CXs can be freely imported. The Canadian government applies a similar rule after 15 years.
