'HEAVENLY REACH'

Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi, East Wing.

This is a 9-stop HDR capture. I used Canon 5D Mk2 and Canon 8-15mm fisheye lens, supported by Gitzo GT5541LS tripod and Really Right Stuff BH-55 ballhead. I used a Promote Remote Control for exposure bracketing.

I used an iphone app called 'planets' to help me find the milky way in relation to Brayshaws Hut. While the camera picks up the detail, you can barely make it out with the human eye. Once I had the direction locked in it was all about getting the composition right. Photo is one image (not HDR) captured in camera.

I managed to get the lighting right for this one. So for anyone wanting to have a go here are the settings:

* 50mm lens

* ISO:6400

* Apeture: F1.4

* Shutter speed: 30 seconds

* Brayshaws Hut: light painted for 2 seconds (L to R sweep)

We were very fortunate to spend this year's 4th of July holiday with family & friends, and we had an absolutely fantastic time! We also had a rare opportunity to attend a fireworks show as a guest of the team responsible for running the event.

Just wanted to say thank you to Doug, Brian, and the rest of the team for giving us the opportunity to see how a professional fireworks display is choreographed and executed. The show was outstanding, and will be remembered by us for a long time to come.

Here's a few of my favorite fireworks shots that I took at their show... These are all non-HDR captures, and have been finished in Photoshop.

Three-bracketed HDR captured by a Pentax K-01 with a Rikenon 2/50mm film SLR lens, then assembled with HDRtist Pro Rendering.

This was also handheld, which should be obvious by the blurry points here and there, but I didn't do it on purpose. It was late and I put the old film lens on the camera, then forgot I had left it set to bracketing. It took me a few minutes to notice that I was getting three shots of everything. D'OH

HDR captured with a Nokia808 pureview (-2,0,+2)

Got my Nikon D800 on Friday and I am absolutely loving it! Didn't have a ton of time over the weekend so I did some tests around town. This was my first time trying out the Nikon 16-35mm f/4.0 lens, which immediately felt "right" to me, as I love shooting wide (my Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 is one of my favorite lenses on my D80).

I was in this orchard and the dynamic range was out of control, so I decided to try some HDR captures and see how they came out. I'm blown away by the dynamic range capabilities of this camera already, processing these files is a complete joy (well, aside from the processing TIME, which is bogging down my computer a bit at the moment). The tonal range is just incredible. I was also impressed with how sharp these came out, given that I was shooting handheld (my Really Right Stuff L-Bracket will be here on Wednesday).

5-exposure HDR bracketed at 1-stop, Handheld, blended in Photomatix. Additional post-processing in Lightroom 4 (which I am also loving).

Computer Note: Windows Vista, Intel Core i7 920 Overclocked to 3.2GHz, 12GB of RAM.

Processing Time Comparison:

Blending 3 10 megapixel D80 images took about 90 seconds in Photomatix.

Blending 5 36 megapixel D800 images takes about 4 minutes and 30 seconds.
