I walked by the window at work today around 5pm today and noticed a bunch of very high clouds. So I thought to myself, I wonder if I can make it to the beach in time to catch the epic sunset I was denied on my last trip to the coast?

Pacific City to Newport. 50 miles with one grueling painful climb due to a missed turn. But a wonderful sunny day otherwise.
A gorgeous evening along the Oregon Coast from a slightly different point of view. Have a great day!

I have a hard time photographing Haystack Rock...unless the tide is way out..there is no foreground element....So this Portrait shot with all the layers seemed to "do it" for me.
I have some major "catching" up to do...:-) Hope you have all been enjoying preparing for the Holidays!

beautiful spring day at the coast. sunny blue sky, mild temperature, low wind and very low number of visitors. not surprisingly, there were few surfers suited up and out surfing in the frigid freezing water of the pacific ocean. crazy people i say

Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach in Oregon. There was a lot of mist at first but as the sun was setting the mist started to clear and revealed a gorgeous sky with really nice clouds and lighting.

but, that did not keep people from enjoying the beach... these beaches are very wide and they extend often for miles, tides are extensive, and there are sneaker waves that come up and grab someone once in a very long while, and the person disappears, can be a child, a dog, even more than one person at a time... spoils the fun and the peace... to know or not to know, what is best...

You just never know what the light is going to do. You can try to predict it, and sometimes get it right, but usually it's just wishful thinking. This particular evening I wasn't expecting any light to pop through the clouds, but was hoping for the whole sky to light up. I ended up with something in the middle, but I was really happy with the dichotomy between the dark moody clouds around Cannon Beach's Haystack Rock and the sun breaking through on the left. That's the fun of landscape photography... Always changing conditions, and making the best of what you're given.

I was completely exhausted and elated to score this photo from the Oregon Coast, a full horizon-to-horizon view of the Milky Way Galaxy over Cape Kiwanda, showcasing the Aurora Borealis.

This was taken the night before my last image. We were blessed with a beautiful sunset on the coast. I always say that Nikki and I have pretty damn good travelers weather when it comes to photography. After this evening, I was hoping that there was going to be a epic sunrise to follow this up. It was nothing like this but, it was very tranquil and beautiful in its own way.
Instead of heading back to Portland for the night after this sunset, we ended up getting a room with this exact view instead. It was awesome to sleep right behind the haystack!
The straightening on this one really threw me off. I just decided to go with Haystack being straight. Let me know your thoughts? Look crooked to you? I also really cranked this one up. Gary got a phone call right after we got done shooting this sunset and I'm pretty sure he could tell that I was pretty excited :)
