HUG POINT STATE RECREATION SITE

Just south of Cannon Beach, this little wayside gives you easy access to the beach and a peek at some interesting history. Imagine travelling by stagecoach along the beach (before the highway was built, the beach was the only way to go). North of the parking area you can still walk along the original trail carved into the point by the stagecoaches. The wayside was named after this trail because it hugs the point. Looking further north, Haystack Rock?one of the most identifiable landmarks along the coastline?is easily visible.

Caution to visitors; be aware of the tide! It is possible to become stranded at high tide when exploring the point. Take a look at the stagecoach trail, the view of Haystack Rock and the two caves around the point, but have a plan. Pick up a tide book at one of the local shops: have fun and be safe.

I heard a loud rhythmic repetitive call a bit different from the usual "Mine! Mine! Mine!" of genus Larus (which was also hard to miss as it was going on constantly.) Apparently this is a different "mine, mine, mine" comment. He was calling continually. She may have interjected an occasional comment, hard to tell. Western Gulls.

Every time I look through my vacation photos for something to post I keep getting drawn to the shots from Cannon Beach. I'm sure everyone is going to start getting tired of Haystack Rock on my flickr stream. I will try hard to mix things up here and there.

Took a few photos before it suddenly got windy and rainy.

Cannon Beach, Oregon, is an affluent tourist resort destination. In 1846, a cannon from the US Navy schooner Shark washed ashore just north of Arch Cape, a few miles south of the community. The schooner hit land while attempting to cross the Columbia Bar, also known as the "Graveyard of the Pacific." The cannon, rediscovered in 1898, eventually inspired a name change for the growing community. The cannon is now housed in the city's museum and a replica of it can be seen alongside U.S. Highway 101. Two more cannons, also believed to have been from the Shark, were discovered on Arch Cape over the weekend of February 16, 2008. Cannon Beach is recognized by its well-known landmark, Haystack Rock. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannon_Beach,_Oregon

Haystack Rock is a 235 feet (72 meters) sea stack in Cannon Beach, Oregon. A popular tourist destination, the monolithic rock is adjacent to the beach. The Haystack Rock tide pools are home to many intertidal animals. Near Haystack Rock are the Needles, two tall rocks rising straight out of the water. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haystack_Rock

bit of nice clouds, Haystack Rock, Pacific City, Or.

I heard a lot of vocalizations from Black Oystercatchers but wasn't seeing them easily - this one was visible on rocks just on the south side of Haystack Rock, between that and the 'needle' rock.

“I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it. People think pleasing God is all God cares about. But any fool living in the world can see it always trying to please us back.”

Pelagic cormorants preening on Haystack Rock. Even on a grey, foggy day, they have some nice iridescence. (While the white flank patches are not visible in this photo, they were very visible in other points of the preen.) yes they do have great camouflage in basalt although not if they're on the bright white guano.
