Truck Thursday

It's rare that I see one of these trucks so full. Got lucky!

A group of Utah Railway MK50-3 and SD50S locomotives glide through Provo Yard on April 16, 2011. The six axle coal haulers wear a mix of traditional Utah Railway and Genesee & Wyoming colors.

Poking out the south end of Settegast Yard as it puts its train together, UP 3029 sits on Main 2 of the East Belt at Interstate Jct. This is the first of two daily transfers that run from Settegast Yard in Houston to Coady Yard in Baytown.

Adventuress is a 133-foot gaff-rigged schooner launched in 1913 in East Boothbay, Maine. She has since been restored, and is listed as a National Historic Landmark. She did some Arctic exploring and later was a pilot ship in San Francisco. She now sails out of Port Townsend as part of Sound Experience. On this trip in the San Juan Islands, we caught some strong wind that whipped up some spray on these folks hauling on the jib sheet with their rumps on deck.. The foresail can be seen furled down as she sped along with the jib and mainsail. (www.soundexp.org).

Due to a group of VRS geeps being temporarily OOS for painting the Vermont Railway has been using ancient Green Mountain Railroad Alco RS1 405 for daily freight service on the Bellows Falls switcher assignment (train DASW). Normally this unit only sees service on the VRS' passenger excursion trains and perhaps use on revenue freights once or twice a year at most. So any time she's used for revenue service is special, and I'm hard pressed to think of anywhere else in the country an RS1 is used to haul freight anymore. For these reasons, any time she is out and I can swing it I make the nearly 3 hr trip north to see her.

What is even more special is that this unit is very much on home rails having been built for the Rutland in November 1951. So that means she is approaching her 71st birthday in a few months and has never left the Green Mountain state!

Here is the ancient veteran at MP B2.5 on modern day VRS' Falls Running Track of the Bellows Falls Subdivision which is the original Rutland Railway Green Mountain mainline. She is lugging more than 30 cars and the dead VTR 207 (headed to the North Walpole paint booth) down track 1 as she assists with yarding train 263 which just arrived from Rutland in this view looking west from the Riverside Road crossing.

For a change, a meeting with ‘Nina’ instead of ‘Lena’. Having already been able to take a few pictures of VTG Retrack's 159 222, christened Lena, in the past, I was granted a shot of 159 221 on the evening of 26 July 2024. The Euro Dual locomotive named Nina was hauling a tank wagon train southwards, presumably to Burghausen in the Upper Bavarian chemical triangle. The locomotive was in service for a long time in front of the so-called lye trains, but currently shares with its sister primarily the task of transporting fuels between northern and southern Germany.

Many thanks to Randy von Liski for graciously allowing me to use his excellent picture of the Illinois State Fairgrounds Coliseum as the background for this scene. Randy’s original picture can be viewed here - flic.kr/p/2okZyvD I would invite everyone to visit Mr. von Liski’s photostream and his award winning portfolio.

Similarly the picture of this finely maintained 1963 Peterbilt 281 was taken at the ATHS Convention and Truck Show, Illinois State Fairgrounds, Springfield, IL - but not at the same time or place.

Possibly you might be seeing this same background picture being used to showcase other truck pictures taken at the ATHS truck show. This is, of course, is dependent on Mr. von Liski’s approval.

A bit of trivia - A model 281 was prominently featured in the made-for-TV movie Duel, directed by 23 year old Steven Spielberg, in 1971. When the film was released theatrically in overseas markets, additional scenes were filmed in order to lengthen it to 90 minute feature length. These additional scenes were shot with a Peterbilt 351, modified to match the original 281 as closely as possible.

Following on from a few days of sunny conditions, more Autumn type weather followed. Another new spot - here we see the special livery OBB locomotive 1144 040 rounding the curve in Kub as it climbs towards Semmering with EC151 from Wien Hbf to Ljubljana on the morning of the 8/11/21.

Please note, the dull conditions made this shot possible at this location for the time of day.

Well, I have probably shown enough Utah Railway photos so I thought I would switch directions to another shortline. This one is Central Oregon & Pacific before they were G&W. The Weed Hauler is seen southbound at Mink with a corporate leader and two ex-BN units on crisp Fall afternoon. 9.30.99

Nice Frieghtliner with a extended sleeper. Traveling thru Olean, NY.

A UP manifest with lots of power runs down the Spine Line at Hope, Minnesota under glorious sunny and wintry conditions.

On a quick trip to Hilton Head last weekend, I made a stop at Fish Haul Creek Park, a beautiful spot near Port Royal Sound that always yields good birds. A nice little Tri-colored Heron was waiting here to greet me...

With a lengthy cut of reefers from Gallo Wine on the head end, an eastbound manifest rolls through Port Royal. This was probably 18G given the consist, but I didn't write down a symbol. My core memory from this train was letting a call go to voicemail while it was passing, only to realize it was a post-graduation job offer that was music to my broke college student years. I called back just before the end of the work day, and missed an SP unit trailing on 21M in the meantime. I probably made the right decision, though.

Power for UP's Anaheim Hauler rests at the modest UP facilities in Anaheim. A "Hauler" job from West Colton keeps the yard fed with cars bound for the local industries in the area.

Union Pacific painted a pair of SD40-2s to haul around the Olympic Torch in 1996. After that task was complete, UP placed the pair into general service for a few months before repainting them back into traditional Union Pacific colors.

The pair had a westbound grain empty rolling across Iowa on the former Chicago and North Western in June of 1996.

Truck Thursday

Since the Interstate is far from here we see these big trucks all the time. It was pouring rain when I took this photo.

I was a passenger and not driving at the time :)

Old style grain hauler with hydraulic lift tilt bed used for hauling soybeans to the elevator back in the day. Now mostly used by small roofing companies to handle asphalt shingle tear offs. Too small for modern day large scale soybean production.

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad 6773 pulls into the Northside station in Akron, Ohio on March 29, 2024. The streamlined passenger locomotive was built for the Canadian National Railway by Alco in Montreal, Quebec in 1959.

As normally-sunny Southern California gets overtaken with angry storm clouds, UP MWCEC 18 pulls out of West Colton with cars for the Imperial Valley and the Ferromex interchange at Calexico. Trailing is two new Tier 4 EMD products, getting some of their first revenue miles broken in. They're about to get a big test as the train will shortly be attacking Beaumont Hill.

We struck gold this weekend with the blizzard snow that happened the prior day. We watched this Baldie picking away at this dead coyote for awhile. The only reason we had to leave the scene was an approaching car behind us was closing in quickly. I'll be posting more treats soon :) Click for large view.
