P&W's Toledo Hauler crosses the coast range on it's 75 mile journey from a Georgia Pacific mill in Toledo to Albany. Much of that is in a dense forest. I found it crawling along in the forest near Blodgett just east of the Summit. Definitely not the well lit open view we often go for, but there is something about all the moss on the trees that puts me into the Pacific Northwest.

Bird photography sounds peaceful. You picture me quietly communing with nature, sipping coffee while majestic creatures flutter by, posing politely like they’re in a Disney movie. That’s a lie. The truth involves hauling lawn chairs, tripods, and a camera bag that weighs more than a third grader across the desert before sunrise—all to sit motionless next to a glorified livestock trough filled with water I wouldn’t let my enemies drink.
This cattle tank, which I have gentrified into a “desert oasis” (by tossing in a stick), is now a fine-dining establishment for birds. The stick is important. I found it on the ground, which makes it natural, and I chose one with bark and lichen because birds don’t like muddy feet—and I like a pretty perch.
Birds don’t just fly in, though. First, they land about twenty-five feet away in what I call the staging area, where they scope things out and decide if it’s safe to drink. Just as I know birds come here for water, they know hawks come here for birds. If it seems risky, they vanish into the brush to post angry tweets about predator privilege.
This time, an American Robin decided to play along. He glided down to the branch, dipped his beak into the water, then raised his head to swallow—because robins, like most birds, can’t gulp. They rely on gravity to get the water down. No swallow muscles. No peristalsis. Just tip and pray.
As he tilted his head back, water spilled from his beak. I fired off a burst of photos. In this frame, he’s in perfect profile, water spilling from his bill, with a few droplets stopped in mid-air and a few reached the surface, sending delicate ripples across the pond.
His reflection was beautiful and haunting, like a bird pondering the mysteries of hydration—or maybe just wondering why some guy shoved a branch in his drinking fountain.
In the desert, water is liquid gold. To birds, cattle tanks are survival. To me, they’re proof that lugging heavy gear into the wilderness to photograph a robin mid-sip is a perfectly reasonable way to spend retirement.
Especially if you're trying to avoid housework.

On 02nd of June 2021, 192 011 hauled intermodal train DGS 43104 between Kufstein and Leipzig Wahren. I was able to photograph the colourful intermodal train near Hagenacker in the Altmühl valley.
Soo 4424 leads a morning Ford Hauler under Dayton's Bluff and into St. Paul Yard back in June 2000. I always preferred getting Soo power on the Hauler compared to the bandit MP15ACs that usually worked this job but didn't really catch it all that much. Being a west-side Twin Cities resident, I never gave the Ford Hauler the attention I should have.

This past Saturday, I had the great joy of seeing Western Maryland 1309 for the first time in operation. The incredible restoration and fundraising efforts that went into bringing this magnificent machine back to life were Herculean, and all worth it in the end. Seen here is 1309, originally built for the C&O in 1949, pulling the WM Frostburg Flyer around the famous Helmstetter's Curve. This iconic American railroading location is still special, and there is truly nothing like big steam.

The daily Ford Hauler creeps through the West Seventh neighborhood in St. Paul with inbound parts and empty autoracks. News of the plant closing had been announced and I took it upon myself to document a couple of these trains before they were done.
Not the 1960s,this was 19/12/2000 when 48151 took a load of hoppers from Ribblehead Quarry to Carlisle.Here crossing the viaduct in awful weather.

NS 1310 still in the blue outfit of the NS used in the sixties and seventies, hauls a consist of 6 coaches, five 'Plan E' and a brand new IC coach. The train is spotted just before the station Klimmen-Ransdaal in the far southeast of the Netherlands. The train (no passengers between Heerlen en Valkenburg) is a 'Valkenburg Express', a train running in summer time on Saturday only. The train is coming from Heerlen, travels to Maastricht via Valkenburg, a popular holiday town in the Netherlands. North of Maastricht the coaches run as a regular intercity to Amsterdam and the coastal town Zandvoort aan Zee.

Having just crest the summit in the Oregon Coastal range, Portland & Western's well know "Toledo Hauler" makes its way downgrade and eastbound along the Mary's River drainage enroute of a final destination of Albany, Oregon. This well known route between Toledo and Albany, Oregon for a connection to a paper mill along the Oregon Coast offers a more secluded and dense coastal forestry scene that has since overgrown the tracks since they were first laid here in the late 1800s. With heavy moisture pouring off the nearby Pacific Ocean, majority of this route is overtaken with Douglas fir, Cedar, Alder, Bigleaf maple and much more making photography up and close with the G&W EMD's that have ran this route for the past few decades.

Colas Class 56 No. 56094 departs Britton Ferry in South Wales on the start of its journey to Chirk in North Wales, in charge of a loaded timber train (6Z51).
On September 14, 2021 D-LM 193 774 painted in the colors of Rail Traction Company (RTC) was awaited by several photographers at Stegenwald with train # 44871 from Munich to Tarvisio. That train operated by Lokomotion hauled gonolas loaded with scrap.
Am 14. September 2021 war die in den Hausfarben der Rail Traction Company (RTC) lackierte D-LM 193 774 für die Beförderung des 44871 von München nach Tarvisio eingeteilt, der an diesem Tag ausschließlich aus mit Schrott beladenen Ea-Wagen bestand und bei Stegenwald von mehreren Fotografen freudig erwartet wurde. Another oldie from long ago in a past life. Here is the caption I wrote at the time:
It was still overcast and dreary in the 49th State and didn't look much like spring, but there was a touch of warmth in the air and the snow was just barely hanging on. Earlier in the year one of the ARR's longtime gravel customers, Quality Asphalt Paving, was awarded a very large contract for a runway expansion at the Anchorage International Airport which necessitated one of the earliest start ups in the history of ARR gravel operations with the first train running only the day before. This shot is of the second 150W train of season as it curls south splitting the signals at CP1140 in downtown Anchorage. Trailing two SD70MACs are 86 loaded 100-ton steel hoppers, another first for gravel operations, as operational changes allowed for the consist to grow from the 80 cars that was standard in prior seasons. The train is about to knock down the clear aspect on the main while the red signal guards the yard lead at the south end of the Anchorage classification yard. In the distance the high bluffs of Point Woronzof jut out into the cold tidal waters of Cook Inlet.
