A theatre production tackling bullying, discrimination, and hate crime is currently touring schools across Tameside, with GMP playing an important role in bringing the initiative to life.
‘OutLoud’, delivered by Hive North and funded by Tameside Council’s Community Safety Partnership, is being showcased in local schools as part of GM Hate Crime Awareness Week and LGBTQ+ History Month.
The programme uses live theatre and interactive workshops to help young people explore identity, language, discrimination, and the impact of hate crime.
As part of GMP’s commitment to preventing hate crime and safeguarding young people, Tony Lawton, School Engagement Officer for Tameside, has been instrumental in coordinating local delivery.
Tony works closely with partners from the Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council (TMBC) Violence Reduction Unit, to identify which schools would benefit most from the production.
Drawing on his knowledge of local communities and the issues faced by students, Tony liaises with TMBC to ensure the project reaches the right audiences.
Using his established contacts within Tameside schools, Tony connects the programme’s organisers with school leadership teams, helping secure access and ensuring the sessions are delivered where they can have the greatest impact.
This partnership working reflects GMP's ongoing dedication to supporting education‑based prevention and fostering safer, more inclusive communities.
About the ‘OutLoud’ Programme
Aimed at Key Stage 3 pupils, each session includes:
A 30‑minute live theatre performance
A facilitated workshop led by trained actor‑educators
The content draws on real lived experiences, local voices, and current issues that resonate with Tameside’s young people. The programme has been shaped in partnership with Tameside Youth Service and local LGBTQ+ youth groups.
The play and workshops address:
Homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, and wider discrimination
Harmful or discriminatory language
Cyberbullying and digital safety
Hate crime awareness and how to report it
LGBTQ+ identity, allyship, and positive role modelling
By engaging young people at a formative age, the project aims to challenge harmful attitudes early and create a culture of empathy, inclusion, and peer accountability.
Cllr Stephen Homer, Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Community Safety, praised the initiative, saying: “It is great that such a powerful interactive workshop will be reaching students in Tameside.
The team covers such important and relevant topics and guides the students to understand the impact of hate crime and the importance of respect and inclusion.
Reaching young people at this pivotal age plays a vital role in shaping a more welcoming and safer community.”
The success of the ‘OutLoud’ tour highlights the strength of partnership working across Tameside. GMP’s involvement ensures that education around hate crime remains rooted in local insight, real‑world experience, and community safety priorities.

Held on May 8 at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, the event included "Fight or Flight: A Conference on the Modern Jewish Community," a screening of the movie "Denial," and a follow up discussion with Professor Deborah Lipstadt.
Today the Council of Europe encourages people across the member states to take action against hate crime. 22 July is the day of Oslo attacks and Utøya massacre that claimed a total of 77 lives. The attacks were motivated by extreme right ideology and racist hatred, the perpetrator confessing to view all the victims as traitors for supporting immigration and multiculturalism. The attacks on 22 July were an attack on the human rights culture upon which Europe is based."

By the way, the owner of the next door shop told me the building was built by Al Capone, but I did some research and found that this is an unsubstantiated rumor. Too bad...
