Two of a clutch of five three-toed box turtle eggs are hatching. After slitting the shell with its egg tooth, the hatchling pushes a front leg out for leverage.
The way the light fell on the gravestone reminded me of pencil marks in cross-hatching shading. The light falls one way and the bark on the tree goes in the opposite direction. It denotes the separation of life and death and the bark speaks of our journeys through life: a journey that ends with physical death but perhaps there is a light beyond.
The act of a snake coming out of it's egg is called pipping. Sometimes a snake will stay in there for several days until it's absorbed all the yolk, or is ready. This particular snake is an Anery meaning it lacks color. Once they hatch it's good to leave them with the other eggs because their movement will tell the eggs it's time to hatch. When we 'popped' (a term for sexing a snake) this particular snake, we found out it was a female. Trying to get babies to eat can be very difficult. So far, it has been a month and this little girl hasn't eaten yet.
This creature is called a 'Kobold' and belongs to the folklore of the Harz Region.

Momma wood duck laid 16 eggs and several other helpful birds added theirs to her nest. After 16 hatched she decided her work was done and left the remainder. Thanks to county extension, Sea Biscuit has a fine egg incubator for just such events. Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter (donations welcome see blog)
