Since I couldn't find any photos of the LaCie Porsche's bottom I took this one. There are four rubber feet and some ventilation slots.
The drive gets hand warm, so nothing to worry about in the short run. Not sure about how this affects long term usage though.
Here's what I put in it. For starters. Fry's has "limit 1 per customer" deals, but, luckily, with Drobo that's not an issue. You can mix drives.
Case opened, exposing its hard disk. Battery is underneath it. Notice the large rubber structures around the hard disk, for protection.

After 5 years of (24/7/365) operation, the drive crashed and died. But, it's a nice piece of technical innovation for taking pictures of it, so i decided to open the Harddrive and take some photo's of its inside.

Yes, This is world of Memory. I still rember those days when i was in the market to buy Desktop and 40GB was the largest HDD you will get. Now a days just get pen drive of size 64GB :)

1. My computer froze and 2 Western Digital (WD) hard drives died simultaneously.
2. I pay DKK 8000 to rescue the data from the most important drive and reject the offer to rescue the other drive for DKK 150.000 (in UK). It suddenly became very unimportant for me.
3. I borrow the rescue company's drive with my data home and transfer the data to another WD drive I have.
4. 2 days later, that drive also dies.
5. I buy 2 x 1TB WD drives and one 250GB mobile WD drive.
6. I transfer the data to the new mobile WD drive and back up the data to the two TB drives.
7. One day later the new mobile drive dies as well and by accident I knock over one of the new TB drives and kill it instantly.
8. Deadcount = 5. I let go of WD forever.
It begins... started by coating the outside of the pages with glue, placing a divider between the last page and the back cover, andd saving a few pages at the start. Once dry, I measured the HD and started cutting.
Technically, I wouldn't consider this a modification since I only put black duct tape over the huge LEDs to make it look more industrial.
Now when the drive's working, it just has a blue glow on the edges - instead of normally lighting the whole face up.
