With my storage running out on my desktop computer as well as my backup server, I decided to buy a new harddisk to expand my storage on my computer. It's quite tedious business though to balance your newly acquired product on two pyramids of carton to get a product shot. It gets even worse when you decide to balance the setup on a book (connoisseurs may recognize this book as the "Electronic communications systems" book used for introduction to telecommunication). And even worse when you decide you need more height and balance the book yet again on another not really stable empty toner box. The harddisk survived, and now I'll have infinitely more space for my pictures!

Unfortunately all of these very nice Torx screws don't seem to be metric. At least not M3. I like Torx much better than the common socket head ones.

Feeling bored and a little bit frustrated again. So I once again browsed the archives and exhumed some more or less interesting captures from the harddisk coffin.

Shot this in 'shutter priority' mode i.e. I do the shutter speed the camera takes care of the aperture. I slowed the shutter speed down so that this image is around 4 seconds of exposure. The camera set the aperture to F22 although I think I'd gone off the scale. Wohoo so interesting... I know.

Anyway, the longer the shutter time, the crisper the reflection (mental note to self about water). However above 4 seconds things start to get a bit over exposed in this situation.

Thanks to Norbino for geting me to correct the explanation above, whenever I write stuff down only half ends up being typed for some reason, the rest remains in my head flapping about.

This is what the machine looked like when trying to boot last Saturday morning.

Obviously. Not. Good.

Also, the drive had started to make these interesting clicking noises, combined with high pitched whining.

That drive is now in my fridge, maybe I'll be able to retrieve some data from it later this week.

The insane part here is that a colleague mentioned the disk in his powerbook dying last week too ...

So, apparently it's catching. When did you last backup your drive?

More photo you take, more space you need...

These are two fans in my tower computer. They cool down my harddisks to keep them healthy. And this is what they looked like when I started taking my computer apart. This is to serve as a reminder to myself to not let it get this bad before clearing out all the dust. And a suggestion to you, dear reader, to sometimes open up your computer and clear out the dust. ;)

A scatter plot of price-vs-size of over 750 external hard disk drives available from Amazon.com, as of April 8, 2009. Note the fierce price competition at the cheap end of the 1TB line. The 1.5TB and 2TB products are still forming. Source: the factBlender hard drives chart, showing external drives

this is one of the older pics i digged out from my harddisk. met eason in a photo exhibition that i involved in organizing. he is a bit embarassed to bump into fans in this occasion.. haha

this exhibition was held when i was still in idn (episode 1)

This is a Samsung hard disk I have used for backups. Thank god I did not need it when it died.

On the left is an Intel postville 160 GB Solid state disk (ssd)

On the right is a Western Digital 500 GB harddisk

This combination gives my an extreme balans between speed en space.

Word for Mac warned me that my harddisk was full, and didn't save my documents. Word was wrong, I checked my harddisk, there was more than 2 GB free space on the disk as you can see behind the alertbox if you understand Dutch! According to Word, my memory stick (which was empty) was full too, so I had the shut down the $^%$^#%!!! program and start over again. It is the only problem I had with my Mac.... M$

there is a name for this wooden elefant, it´s at the east coast.
