A very very happy Yellow Rumped Warbler has all the berries it can eat at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.
The Yellow-rumped Warbler is the only warbler able to digest the waxes found in bayberries and wax myrtles. Its ability to use these fruits allows it to winter farther north than other warblers, sometimes as far north as Newfoundland.
Yellow-rumped Warblers are perhaps the most versatile foragers of all warblers. They're the warbler you'd most likely to see fluttering out from a tree to catch a flying insect, and they are also quick to switch over to eating berries in the fall.

The last shot of maple on the Aoki-ko lakeside. This one was the most Christmas-coloured among the maple shrubs around the lake.
Koha'uchiwa Kaede or Siebold's maple (Acer sieboldianim) is native/endemic to Japan. It was named by a German botanist Philipp Franz von Siebold who was assigned as a medical doctor to the Dutch enclave of Dejima in Nagasaki in the mid-19th century.
This maple species grows in higher mountain areas than the similar Ha'uchiwa Kaede (fullmoon maple, Acer japonicum).
Momiji or Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) grows in warmer lowland areas.
Taking a quick detour from the Tassie beachscapes to share a simple iPhone snap of Jazzy while walking at our local dog-friendly beach today. She’s pushing 13 now (in human years, she’s ancient… in dog years, she’s just refined). Regardless of age she will always be my “Pup”
Jazzy loves the beach, clearly a trait she inherited from her human dad 😉 Today she was tearing up and down the sand dunes like a pup half her age, thinking it was hilarious to run into me for a pat at the bottom. Then she hit the surf club café with us, hoping to score a few burger scraps. I may have weakened and given her a few.
She wasn’t the only hopeful diner, the seagulls had formed a very photographable line along the railing, telling me "MINE! MINE! MINE!”. I ignored them, it was mine!
I didn't have a camera with me today and the ocean and sky looked so photogenic, but it was nice to just be in the moment. A simple beach walk, some dog joy, and a burger by the sea - that will do me for a happy life.

Happy Caturday 24 April 2020 "Make us smile." This picture always makes me smile because she is so often busy with grooming all that hair - and look at that tongue! what a piece of equipment. And my camera actually got a photo, which makes me smile too.
