First of all, this is not my photo, as I was only shy of a year old.
A very good friend, Bob Willoughby, was a male cheerleader for the University of Michigan at this time (December, 1947). The U of M went to the Rose Bowl that year (played on January 1, 1948; U of M 49, USC 0), and he and another cheerleader rode with the coach (Newt Loken) and his wife to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA (in his new 1947 Buick, by the way).
They made a side trip to the Grand Canyon, where the coach offered this bit of entertainment for the onlookers. Bob tells me that there was more space before the dropoff than seems apparent in the photo. I believe the coach's wife took the photo. (Obviously a very loyal wife)!
