do you ever feel like, after you make an elaborate dinner, you're too tired to really even turn the leftovers into bento?
i pulled through and threw my leftovers into a quick bento with a simple presentation tonight, but there's no way i have the energy left to blog about it on bento zen... oh well!
main box: oven roasted halibut with cherry tomatoes and pesto, cucumber baran, and risotto with zucchini, baby bella mushrooms, and asparagus tips (topped with a skewer of sweet potato sakuras).
fruit sidecar: nashi fan, kiwis and starfruit slices, and halved green grapes underneath.
hope you all enjoyed a nice long new year's weekend and are starting your 2010 with healthful bentos (or delicious elaborate dinners that never make it into bentos)!

Here's one more from Halibut Point last weekend. This was just before leaving, the rock had these awesome cracks that I wanted to use. The color in the sky is actually to the north-northeast, so not anywhere near the actual sunset.
I may not get out again to shoot until October. Things are starting to get busy with preparing for the annual craft fair at Tower Hill, which I will be participating in again this year. I have to get a lot of prints, matting, and packaging done before then. Around the same time in October, I am hoping to be heading to the Finger Lakes area of New York. This is one of the best waterfall regions in the Eastern US, and I hope to be there to coincide with the foliage change. I'll definitely be hitting Taughannock Falls and Watkin's Glen, and may fit a few other places in as well.
A very good friend of mine just moved to Alaska. He sent me smoked halibut. It is good. Reall, really good.

Fish Company - Los Alamitos
I wish I could go there again tonight but we're still self-isolating.

Halibut
- black walnut, green tea pil pil
Remarkable dish - a sophisticated concept and flawless execution. This was a play on the texture contrasts, i thought. Fish was perfectly cooked - sous-vide, I am guessing.

To make sure it didn't flop all over the place and create problems, its mouth was tied to its tail. Problem solved...
Pan Seared Halibut:
-pan seared halibut, corn flan, fava beans, zucchini, cashews
cilantro pesto
Masterful preparation, classic and refined. You wouldn't find cashews on the plate pictured, as I have asked the kitchen to serve this dish without nuts.

Poached halibut with whole wheat spaghetti dressed with a cream and caper sauce.
This one is a winner.
Sometimes I take pictures of my dinner.
Trying to embrace fresh halibut season. Local, sustainable, nutritious and delicious!
Probably some first time making lentils. Still got some learnin to do. Halibut was seared in some butter then finished in the (toaster) oven for a few minutes. I love sticking my pans in the toaster oven.

At Troquet in Boston, the halibut dish is an exquisite celebration of culinary precision. Perfectly seared to a golden crust, the halibut fillet maintains a tender, flaky interior, offering a balance of textures that delight the palate. Crowned with a tempura-fried zucchini blossom, the dish showcases Troquet's flair for elevating simple ingredients into luxurious bites. Around the halibut, you’ll find a medley of diced heirloom tomatoes and olives, adding a burst of acidity and umami to each forkful. Small potato gnocchi, pillowy and soft, rest in a light, airy foam that has a subtle vegetal note, likely from a delicate blend of herbs or green vegetables. Garnished with delicate chive flowers and microgreens, this dish is both visually stunning and tastefully refined. Every element speaks to Troquet's commitment to fresh, seasonal ingredients, artfully prepared to ensure that each flavor enhances the halibut without overpowering its natural richness. Pair this with a glass of white Burgundy from Troquet’s renowned wine list for the ultimate indulgence. Whether you're a seafood lover or simply appreciate fine dining, this halibut dish is a must-try for those in the know.
