"HAL is a central character in the film by Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke, 2001: A Space Odyssey. As the brain of the spaceship Discovery, HAL is a robot that uses the mechanical, sensing, and information systems under its control, and eventually is driven 'mad' by the responsibility and secrets he bears. It has often been noted that the letters H, A, and L (HAL) are the letters that come before I, B, and M (IBM), but author Clarke always insisted that was a coincidence."

It seemed like a big deal at the time, when I fed $5 into this machine, hoping to buy $8.40 in first class stamps, and it refused to take any singles. Then a message came up saying I had to press YES immediately or it would steal my money.
I kept putting $1 bills into it and kept saying no.
But I just had to fill out a form, give them a bit more money and I walked out with my stamps and a photo.
They should call this machine HAL. :-)

HAL PHYFE was born Harold Rodney Eaton Phyfe in Nice France (1892-1968); the great grandson of Duncan Phyfe, the famous furniture designer. Hal trained as a sculptor in France and also he studied painting in Italy. It was during World War I that he began pursuing photography documenting aviation units in Europe.
After the war he supported himself as an illustrator for magazines but did not open his photography studio at the corner of 72nd & Madison NY until 1926. He had built a reputation for portraitures. Primarily a photographer, he was also noted for using, oil, pastels and colored pencils; many of his images found their way to the covers of movie and theatrical magazines.

Cadet Monica H. Sowinski and Cadet Nicholas R. Webster receive the LTG Harold "Hal" G. Moore Warrior Athlete of Excellence Award 7 November 2018 inside the Haig Room at the United States Military Academy at West Point.
The award recognizes one male and female First Class Cadet each year. The recipients are extraordinary cadets who best exemplify the qualities of LTG Moore and the tenents of the warrior ethos on the athletic playing fields and in the DPE boxing and combatives program.
