That is the Hackney Stargate. Walk through that gate into Hackney Wick and you will instantly be transformed into an artier, trendier, frothier, beard wearing hipster........and never mind what it does for the men!!

A hackney or hackney carriage (also called a cab, black cab, hack or London taxi) is a carriage or automobile for hire. Motorised hackney cabs in the UK, traditionally all black in London, are known as black cabs. Wikipedia

This photo has notes to identify family members. At this time, the husbands of Betty Hackney Thompson and Zoe Torre Hackney would have been serving in the military in Europe. I'm not certain who would have taken this picture, unless it was Janey Hackney.

Hackney Wick, London E9, is a run-down industrial area on the borders of the London Boroughs of Hackney,Tower Hamlets and Newham; which was once little-known outside the immediate vicinity and rarely visited by outsiders. However it lies just a stone's throw from the Olympic Park and now being revitalised by artists and creative enterprises.

These were my favourite white winklepickers.

Obviously not taken by me... :/

I took this picture for Rayleigh Town Museum who are introducing an Object of the week. Here is our first one. Recently purchased from ebay is this Rayleigh UDC (Urban District Council) Hackney Carriage registration No 20.

The words Hackney originated from the village named Hackney in Middlesex and relates to horse drawn carriages. This metal sign would have been displayed on the registered owner’s taxi as a means of formal identification.

We would suggest that it probably dates to the 1960’s, definitely before 1974 when the RUDC was merged into the Rochford District Council.

We wonder who it belonged to?

What car was it on?

Does anyone have a similar example?

Does anyone have any information on these badges?

If so, we would love to hear from you.

Hackney grafitti, London E5

For more than a decade, Zigfrid von Underbelly has been an independent and locally owned ‘art rock von roll’ food house and bar that can be enjoyed for cosy lounging or a big night out.

Zigfrid upstairs is a jukebox and DJ space with a restaurant area. Underbelly downstairs is a host to live gigs and basement clubbing. The two floors share an outside terrace.

They currently stock a range of Dalston’s craft soda pops, make virgin cocktails and are eager to get in their first non-alcoholic beer – just need to decide which one’s the best!

I love hackney.
