2010 Challenge Theme: WEEK 4 SUBMISSION

Alex was our private guide in St. Petersburg, Russia. She was a sweet and bubbly 26 year old who had spent two years in
Pennsylvania in exchange program.
This photo shows how I used our photo challenge 'story starter'. It makes you think about what is happening here or where the photo is taking place, also if this is the beginning, middle or end. In truth it doesn't matter if a story or a picture is ending something because is reality it’s just starting another beginning. I learned how to make something that maybe makes you wonder how a person, place or thing got there. It drives your imagination any where from deep sea to the clouds dancing in the wind. I try to think of a book or a story that I have read and I imagine my picture as a part of the story and I imagine where it would belong. If you can imagine it, you can dream it and if you can dream it then you can achieve it.
A great ride, we were slow to start and had an unlucky spate of punctures so we ended up riding into the beautiful evening light. Dave was visiting us for his third year running and the rest of the group were on their second trip. A great day out.
The guided tour of Spoleto.
We were taken down Via dell' Arringo to Piazza del Duomo, and was taken into Duomo di Spoleto.
The cathedral of Spoleto , whose official name is the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta , is the main place of Catholic worship in the city of Spoleto , the mother church of the archdiocese of Spoleto-Norcia . It is an Italian national monument .
The cathedral was built between 1151 and 1227 in place of a pre-existing building; inside, in the apse , there is the valuable cycle of frescoes by Filippo Lippi Stories of the Virgin , painted in the last years of the artist's life, between May 1467 and September 1469 . It was then consecrated by Pope Innocent III in 1198 .
The cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta was built in Lombard style in the last third of the 12th century to replace the pre-existing church of Santa Maria del Vescovato ( 8th - 9th century ).
At the beginning of the 13th century the facade was erected and the bell tower was completed . From a planning point of view, the facade was retouched several times, until it assumed the current shape of a "hut" facade . It can therefore be said that the facade was completed, as it has come down to us today, in 1207 , the year in which the Solsterno mosaic was affixed and signed.
In 1491 , by Antonio Barocci and his workshop, the portico of the facade was added , in Renaissance style , which had the task of giving greater magnificence to the cathedral. For its construction, it was therefore decided to insert between the chapel of the Assumption and the bell tower, an element composed of five arches, surmounted by a richly decorated entablature and an upper terrace, which allowed the Icons of the Virgin to be displayed during the city festivities .
Between the 17th and 18th centuries , the interior of the cathedral underwent heavy renovations in the Baroque style . In 1608 , Maffeo Barberini became archbishop of Spoleto and immediately showed his intention to change the appearance of the cathedral. He later became pope under the name of Urban VIII , he was able to complete his work thanks also to the help of his nephew Francesco Barberini , who in turn became archbishop of Spoleto . The basilica layout was so upset, the central nave and the two lateral ones were completely rebuilt.
The internal renovation works were only completed towards the end of the 18th century , when Giuseppe Valadier was given the task of designing the newsstands in the aisles, the altars at the head of the transepts and the high altar.
Our guide Rubins, was a true Jungle Man... he called us "Jungle Boys", but I think he was just being polite. Here he is guiding us through the flooded Amazon jungle in a little canoe. The floor of the jungle is 15 metres below the water.
The audio guide seemed to be triggered based on where you stood. And unlike museum audio guides it didn't go on forever.
