Nurtured under the able guidance of Guru Gangadhar Pradhan, Aruna especially excels in the abhinaya aspect of Odissi. She has been a student and Secretary of Orissa Dance Academy. Her unique skill and versatility make her the recipient of many awards and accolades, including the Mahari Award 1997, Sanjukta Panigrahi Memorial National Award 2001, Fellowship by Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India, and an award for her contribution to the field of Odissi Dance, from the Utkal University, orissa. Apart from dance, Aruna has also established herself as an excellent choreographer. Some of the items in her repertoire include the dance ballet “Shrusti O Pralay”, “Varsha Abhisara”, “Shravan Kumar”, “Samrat Kharavela” , “Kanchi Abhijan”, “Krupanidhana” & “Krushna Saranam”, etc. Widely traveled to countries like Canada, USA, South America and some of the European countries, she is the advisor-member of Central Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi. Currently she is conferred for the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for the year -2010 by the Govt. of India. And Govt. of Orissa has appointed her to be the Vice-President of State Sangeet Natak Akademi.

Gatha Odissi - from the temple to the stage
History is not scripted; it gets created over the ages. It transforms itself according to the tides of life and times. Therefore, from the point of view of the present, how does one view the entire panorama of Odissi Dance, which has traveled through an arduous journey of nearly two thousand years?
After the sunrise, comes the dark hour of the sunset. But the rhythmic foot falls of Odissi dance, however, continue to reverberate from within the dark corridors of history.
Around the middle of Ninteenth century a new resolve paves the way for the resurrection of the flagging traditions of Odissi Dance. The danseuse damsels break out of their stony incarnation from temple-walls and metamorphose into life. In this hour of revival, the great Gurus of our times create a whole new grammar of Odissi. The genesis of Mangalacharan, Pallavi, Sthayi, Abhinaya and Moksha, which form the superstructures of Odissi, spring up from the sub-structures of the allied art forms and folk forms of Odisha such as Mahari, Gotipua, Sakhi Nata, Raasa and Leela.
Through brief narrations and symbolic images Odisha Dance Academy spins the story of transformation and resurgence of Odissi Dance spanning from the Jagannath Temple of Puri right up to the contemporary stage.

The second half of WWKW 2009 Day Three found me down at the Mauna Kea Beach with just enough wind to fly a Fled, but not enough to lift a rig. So I flew the Fled and kicked back.
And decided to play with a camera anyway!
With apologies to all the KAPers who are still going through winter weather. Rest assured later in the week I plan to be standing in snow at the summit of a mountain, freezing my toes off. But for now, sand and sunshine.

TEDxYouth@Hollywood is a day-long conference for Southern Californian youth aged 14-19. The event features inspiring people with mind, heart and spirit-expanding stories and ideas to share.
The theme of our inaugural event is JUMPING; as in, jumping into something new, exciting, fearful or inspirational. We are interested in igniting the imaginations of youth and the concept of jumping just for the fun of jumping!
Our presenters are a mix of youth, young adults and established professionals in their fields which run the gamut from entertainment to non-profit, education and business. As our theme promises, we will present a few surprises as well.

... this scene in the movie "Everything is Illuminated" has as little to do with the plot of the movie and is possible, but it is part of the humor of the characters in this nostalgic, historial, entertaining scenario that begins in the USA and ends up in the USSR Ukraine.
... for me this is a must see and must see again movie. Tonight I watched it for the third time. It has nostalgia, but is not purely historical. It has gross tragedy, but is a happy, uplifting movie and it has delightful humor, but is not a pure comedy film.
... the movie is dominated by a Ukranian grandfather, his grandson and an American Jewish boy. The Ukranians have a tour guide service for Jewish people looking for historical landmarks or searching for relatives. The young Jewish boy has purchased their services and is on a mission to find the woman who made it possible for his mother and father to escape death and flee to the US. Did I mention there was a fourth entity in the car with them on this journey? Also along as guest of the grandfather was "the bitch" which is the only name anyone ever used in referring to grandfather's dog.

Career guidance counselling centres set up in Delhi-NCR will provide dedicated career services to young women seeking employment in the region.
The Counselling Centres, a first of its kind for women, builds on the findings of a UNDP commissioned study which revealed that almost 80 percent of young women in Delhi did not have access to accurate and timely information on educational and job opportunities.
According to Jaco Cilliers, Country Director, UNDP India, “By bridging the information gap, career counselling centres that address the specific needs of women and girls seeking employment, can play an important role in empowering women and building their confidence to secure jobs in the formal labour market.”

Growing up in the city of Chicago was great until the neighborhood I was living in started to get bad. Gangs, drugs, fights, etc. started taking place two houses down from my house.
The one thing that kept my brother, friends, and I out of trouble was sports (There was a group of 6 that stayed together). We would go to our grade school and play baseball, football, and basketball. We were too busy playing sports to join the gang. I was amazed how we kept together and stayed out of trouble but I think sports had a lot to do with that. Then we all started moving out to the suburbs where it was easier to find a park and play. In essence, it was easier to stay out of trouble.
I live in Arlington Heights, which is a suburb outside of Chicago. My two sons started to play sports and this picture was taken at their soccer class. While there is no guarantee that they will stay out of trouble when the get older - I really think that playing sports will help.
I really like this picture because if you look at the soccer balls - it forms a Y which in my mind stands for youth. Without sports I stayed out of trouble and learned the aspect of teamwork, trust, and having fun.
I hope it does the same for my kids.

"Pedals vs. Pistons vs. Horseshoes vs. Hiking Boots" is an annual volunteer trail work event on the Flagstaff Ranger District. The event brings together four different forest user groups to work together to improve an area trail. The 2017 volunteer work project was the Upper Moto Trail on the San Francisco Peaks, a motorized, multi-use trail in the Fort Valley Trail System. Participants broke into work teams
The event is put on by Flagstaff Biking Organization, Coconino Trail Riders, Coconino Horseman's Alliance, and Northern Arizona Trail Runners Association, with support and guidance by the Coconino National Forest Flagstaff Ranger District. This year Seeds of Stewardship brought a youth group of young men and women who are part of its Gear Girls and Peaks-to-Park programs to add to the "Pedals" participants.
The group that brings in the most participants holds the trophy for the year. For 2017, Pedals (Flagstaff Biking Organization) reliquished the trophy to Pistons (Coconino Trail Riders).

It was designed in 1637 by Giovanni Battista Antonelli (also known as Juan Battista Antonelli), a member of a Milanese family of military engineers, on behalf of the governor of the city, Pedro de la Roca y Borja, as a defense against raiding pirates, although an earlier, smaller, fortification had been built between 1590 and 1610. Construction of the citadel took 42 years, starting in 1638 and finally being completed in 1700.
The fear of pirate attacks was well-founded. While the fortress was still being constructed in 1662, English freebooters under the guidance of Christopher Myngs took control of Santiago for two weeks and during their stay destroyed part of the fortification and captured the artillery. After they departed, the Spanish government ordered the reconstruction of the damaged part of the fortress and raised the garrison to 300 men. Between 1663 and 1669 the engineers Juan Císcara Ibáñez, Juan Císcara Ramirez and Francisco Perez worked on repairing the damage and improving the fortifications, strengthening the flanks and constructing a new artillery platform. In 1678 it frustrated the attack of a French squadron and in 1680 fought off another attack by 800 men led by Franquesma, the second-in-command of the Antilles filibusters.
The fortress was used in 1898 when the United States' fleet attacked Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War.

IMO Secretary-General Sekimizu (pictured) has opened the Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR), 2nd session (19-23 January 2015), which is being chaired by Mr Sveinung from Norway.
Items on the agenda include technical work related to MARPOL Annex VI and the NOX Technical Code; development of the "Ballast Water Management – How to do it" manual; revision of the Inventory of Hazardous Materials, to support the Ship Recycling Convention; finalization of the draft Guidelines on international offers of assistance intended to provide guidance to States requesting and receiving emergency assistance during spill incidents; and developing a recommendation for a single definition of black carbon in relation to emissions from international shipping.
Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse (aka Tarrytown Lighthouse and Kingsland Point Lighthouse) This light was once a half-mile off shore, warning ships away from dangerous shoals on the east side of the Hudson River. Years of landfill by a now-demolished General Motors factory moved the shoreline within a few feet of the light. The cast iron tower was installed in 1883. Over its 78 years of operation, 12 light keepers and their families occupied the five-story structure. The light was automated in the mid 1950s, and operated until 1961 when navigation lights on the Tappan Zee Bridge rendered it obsolete. In the 1970s Westchester County acquired the decommissioned structure from the federal government.
