It's not by chance that the Meerkats are right near the entry to the open plains Western Plains Zoo at Dubbo in Central West New South Wales. They are certainly popular and fascinating to watch but an ongoing campaign by "Compare the Market" in Australia and overseas using them in comical sketches for advertising has lifted their profile immensely. As in their natural environment, there is always someone on duty watching for danger and ready to call out for a scramble to safety. I understand that this duty is rotated, how smart! They have a wonderful tree stump on which to climb above their enclosure and watch for threats.

A couple of crabs today.

The photo above is something you might not have heard of .... the guard crab.

If you want to see one you will have to spend some time looking in between the lobes of corals that look like cauliflower ( the pocilloporid corals).

If you are lucky you may see an orange or red crab with spots hiding somewhere inside - a guard crab belonging to the Trapezia family. These crabs have a symbiotic relationship with their coral host. They feed on the coral and shelter within it but in return the crabs defend the coral from predators like sea snails and crown-of-thorns starfish. It seems strange that a crab so small can discourage the so much bigger crown of thorns starfish by pinching and nipping them.

There are several different species of guard crabs and it seems that different species may share the same host coral but there will never be more than one male-female pair of any one species on the same coral host. Guard crabs will spend their whole life on the same coral and different species of guard crabs can fight off different predators.

The Ropery consists of Hemp Houses (1728 extended 1812), Yarn Houses and a double Rope House with attached Hatchelling House. The Ropery is still in use being operated by Master Ropemakers Ltd.

The Double Rope House has spinning on the upper floors and ropemaking ( a ropewalk) on the ground floor. It is 346m (1135 ft) long, and when constructed was the longest brickbuilt building in Europe capable of laying a 1000ft rope. Over 200 men were required before 1836, to make and lay a 20in (circumference) cable. All was done by hand. Steam power in the form of a beam engine was introduced in 1836, and then electricity in the early 1900s.

Todmorden

Carved into one of the stones on Bride Stones Moor, above the town of Todmorden, the inscription reads:-

A COY

21st WRBn

HOME GUARD

1940-1945

The 21st (Calder Valley) Battalion, West Riding Home Guard had their headquarters in Sowerby Bridge. They were affiliated to the Duke of Wellingtons Regiment whose cap badge they wore. The Battalion was formed in May 1940 by the redesignation of the Local Defence Volunteer company. It was made up of men in reserved occupations, also those under or over the age to serve in the armed forces. They wore an army style khaki uniform and were equipped with a few rifles.

Now it’s not a million miles from Sowerby Bridge to Todmorden, just short of 11 in total, but still, I’ve no idea what one or more of them were doing up here adding their details to one of the Bridestones.

Thank you for your visit and your comments, they are greatly appreciated.
