A shot from the first quarter of the 'Grouse Grind' trail up the face of Grouse Mountain. This is by far the easiest part of the trail with some nice steps and a relatively shallow incline. I would have taken more further up, but I was busy avoiding cardiac arrest!
My brother and mother on Grouse Mountain, Vancouver, Canada.
On this day my brother came along to do the 'Grouse Grind' a 2.9-kilometre trail up the face of Grouse Mountain, commonly referred to as “Mother Nature’s Stairmaster.

Grouse Grind is the name of the coffee shop at the top. I took Biff there to stop the whining in my ear. Grouse Grind is also the name of the hike that a lot of Vancouverites make from bottom to top of the mountain. You can have yourself timed. The Grouse Grins is a 2.8Km (1.8 mile) hike with an 853 meter (2,800 ft) climb. More information here. Oh yeah, Biff didn't make the hike.
My GPS log from the grind. Some people run this thing... I don't think I will be attempting that any time soon.
Last big race of the summer of 2010.
Sebastian Salas set a new Grouse Grind Mountain Run official record of 25:01 to go with his unofficial recreational record of 23:48 (set in August).
Couldn't get up the mountain fast enough to see Salas finish. Last year I only stayed for start of 3 waves and then caught the Skyride up, just making it in time to see him emerge from the Grind. This year I stayed too long at the bottom -- mainly to see Spandy Andy start.

Hilary and Julian Henley, who would carry their 3 young ones up the Grind, warm up with the crowd of 500+ in the Grouse Mountain parking lot.

Would be a lovely smooth climb if the real Grouse Grind resembled the painting, which hangs in the lobby of the Peak Chalet on Grouse Mountain.
Instead the Grouse Grind is a near vertical 2.9 km workout using steps made from rough logs, roots, stones and railway ties. And it's definitely not smooth.

Realtor Sebastian Albrecht put in this superhuman effort to raise money for charity, www.grind4shelter.com
Asked him if he was OK, since he clearly wasn't at this point. But he still did it. 14 Grouse Grind ascents in one day, finishing at 11:12 p.m.

To the left of Carrie Graham and up in the clouds you can see snow-covered Mt. Baker. Picture taken on the trail up to the Peak.
Seek the Peak: 16 km run up to an elevation of 4,100 ft: from Ambleside Beach up Capilano to the base of Grouse Mt., up the Grouse Grind and up the peak of Grouse Mt. A short run downhill to the Peak Chalet and you're done.

"The Grouse Grind" is the 2.9km walk up Grouse Mountain which climbs 853m in height, over 2.9km. It is steep. It has an average gradient of 31%.
It's a hard walk. And if we died, this sign made it quite clear we couldn't sue anyone.

We made it! Weary and exhausted and, as this sign made clear, we weren't going down that way either.
Down is by the tramway - a mere $10 each rather than the $39.95 it would have cost us to go both ways.
